A school wide birthday celebration, report cards due, a field trip and a wedding yeah it was a busy week…or 4 days! On Wednesday we had our April birthday celebration and I got my first taste of Korean pizza…which is…very…interesting! In a country where potatoes aren’t what you would call common you can find them on pizza…yes pizza! There they were perched upon a mountain of cheese, sprinkling of corn, hint of sweet potato, dash of onion and a slathering of mayo. I know the strangest part of what I just described was not even the potato!
Honestly it tasted like a potato skin not so much a slice of pizza! The other pizza option had ham and potato and something else…I was about to try it when Natasha asked Mike how it was and Mike responded very bluntly with a “like vomit” reply. That instantly stopped my legs from carrying me any closer to the table where the mountains of leftover food was strewn. The fruit however was delicious! I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing cherry tomatoes on cake either. Here you have a beautifully decorated vanilla cake with bright juicy fruits on it and right beside
the tangerines are a line of tomatoes…they take the tomatoes are a fruit thing very literally here apparently!
Thursday brought my first field trip experience. We were supposed to go to the botanical gardens but the forecast was for rain and instead of canceling it Aurora decided that we would go to the Children’s Science Museum. We jumped on 4 Kids Club buses and headed across the city. Now first let me tell you that these buses were basically mini coaches! There were TV’s and cushy seats and nothing big and yellow about them. Lucky kids! Anyway so we drove for about 40 minutes in the rain, which just made Daegu look very depressing. The museum was pretty cool, the kids got to try some really interesting things and run around with the 5000 other kids that were there that day…they must have planned on going to the botanical garden too! I was only in charge of Uranus which was good because they were a handful as it was. Victory stayed by my side the entire time, he’s pretty clingy but so cute that it’s ok! But the rest were wild! When we got back to school we had
a longer lunch than usual because we didn’t have 4th class which was awesome since I have a break after 4th class! So basically I had a lot of time to do nothing! I ended up going down the street to a book store called Smile Book. It has a nice stationary section so I bought some for my kids to use for their penpal letters. The paper is nice and it’s cheap! I also bought a few of those pencil crayons that have 5 different colours in one so if you swirl it as you write the colours change. The kids LOVE when I mark with it! I bought 20 so that I can give them as prizes when my Neptune kids fill their sticker boards. I also bought some sketching stuff because I’ve missed it! Needless to say by the end of the day I was TIIIIRED! Claire and I ended up going out for dinner with Uni, our director, her husband Dr. Joe, (she’s Aurora’s older sister) and Ruth, Aurora’s younger sister! We went to a Bogobi restaurant which is a beef concoction with veggies, it’s pretty good. We also had rib like meat but it’s not
ribs like home…actually better! Let me just say it again, Korean meals come with SOOOO many side dishes its ridiculous! There were 3 different kinds of Kimchi, mini clams which were so cute and delicious there was also spinach and noodles. And if any of these things run out they refill them immediately FOR FREE. Could you imagine if they did that in Canada! Dr. Joe insisted that I try Soju because I still hadn't had it and I don't see myself having it again any time soon! It tastes like...liquefied Polysporen...well I bet it's what liquefied Polysporen would taste like if I were to taste it. Anyway we got home and I finished the rest of my reports which felt GREAT!
Friday was awesome…because it was Friday and that meant Good Friends and more roller skating for my kindergartens! After work Claire and I went to Home Plus after work and bought the necessities for pizza because we are making that tomorrow :D We also talked and talked and talked because we are really good at talking and talking and talking…especially when we have plans to get things done like cleaning our room or showering…or going to bed!

Aurora rocking the heals and bat! I didn’t even fall asleep until 5am because I got into one of those sketching moods and I didn’t get out of it until I passed out on my bed!
Today was awesome! I got to experience my first Korean wedding which was what people had prepared me for and so much more! I was told not to expect the same level of presentation and etiquette we find at home and boy was that true! We arrived at the hotel at the other end of the city and gathered in a room decorated like it was a wedding chapel in Vegas, I half expected to see Elvis standing at the front and some drunk celebrity couple go running down the aisle! The groom also sees the bride before the service which is such a big deal in Western weddings. Some girls walked down the aisle dressed as stewardess’s (well that’s what it looked like to me) carrying swords which made me think that Quinton Tarrantino was there about to film another part to his Kill Bill series! Turtle walked down the aisle first and did something…then Irene walked down with her father and walked under the swords to Turtle.

Convo people The ceremony was all in Korean so I really don’t know what they were saying but even if I did understand Korean I wouldn’t have heard them over the social gatherings happening all around me. You know when you go to a wedding and everyone is talking before the actual event…because weddings are places where people see friends from way back and they have to catch up before the wedding starts. Well that is what happened THROUGH the ceremony and it’s totally normal apparently. They finished the talking part and then the stewardess’s rolled over the wedding cake (they were so multi-talented) which they cut with the ceremonial cake cutting sword and then it was wheeled away again. After everything was said they walked hand in hand down the aisle…well not all the way because Irene’s veil got caught on one of the fake flower arrangements which is so something that would happen to Irene! On the way down I nearly had a heart attack as the stewardess’s fired streamers into the air. After they got to the end they turned around and went back to the front where they took about 600 pictures with family, friends, friends of friends,
the cake people, the hotel staff, the guy who printed their invitations and some guy name Stan.
We headed down to the English style pub for the buffet which was actually pretty good and sat with convo club people. There is no real reception, you eat and then you leave. After we decided that because it was such a nice day we should go do something outside so we headed to Su-sung Land which is like this little fair like amusement park. So there we were about 9 adults dressed in nice clothes swinging bats in batting cages, driving around go-cart courses, playing 20 year old video games, throwing darts at balloons, riding on pirate ships and paddling a over sized duck around a man made pond chasing real ducks! Following our couple hours of outdoor fun we went out for dinner at our favourite little Italian place with our favourite non-Italian chef and had a great dinner of pizza, pasta and wine. Now I’m going to clean my room and go to sleep!
