Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Its only 3 weeks left! After 2 years the time seems to go very quickly. With only a little while left this month has been about getting out to see places that I hadn’t been to yet, planning my travel home (especially the visas), starting to pack up and finish things off. For two and a half months I have been joined in Lanuza by Niels Batke, a short term volunteer from Accenture Germany. Both having good reasons for doing some sightseeing we jumped on our motorbikes, packed out toothbrushes and went for a weekends sightseeing round Surigao del Sur (our [View Full Entry]

Only 2 months left!! That’s right 2 years has turned into 2 months and its going very quickly. There has been plenty happening this month with the big event being the rounding up of the Christmas book buying appeal. Just like this time last year it’s been raining - hard, I had my pocket picked in the big bad city and continued to enjoy working and surfing in Lanuza. The rain this year came down even harder than last year causing flooding along my road, I even saw people using canoes to go through their houses! While my house was fine [View Full Entry]

The last blog of 2007! That means its best wishes for Christmas and New Year all round. I hope your festive season is good and hope to see some good / embarrassing photos soon. I will be spending Christmas and New Year in Sabah (the Malaysian part of Borneo) with Maria. If we are lucky there will be Orangutans in the next blog. Sabah used to be joined to the southern Philippines in a joint kingdom before the British got into creating colonies so its not that far away geographically or culturally but ecologically very different. The main feature of this [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Not so many words this month but loads of pictures. First up is more about the books for Ibuan school scheme followed by some illegal fishing then the surf contest, cock fighting and finally a coup attempt. A big thank you to everyone who has already sent in donations for books and other teaching supplies at Ibuan primary school. The totaliser (who remembers Blue Peter appeals?) has already been extended past the 20,000 peso mark (250 pounds). A re-arranged schedule means that I will be back there on the 5th of December for photographing the Christmas greetings, a management [View Full Entry]

Plenty of excitement this month with a visit to the Manila (the big city!), a rebel raid on the local police station and more illegal mining to report on. First up because it’s the best picture is a visit to Manila. From here in the provinces the big city is a big deal. A whole week of luxuriating in hot showers, chocolate, wine and good food! The flip side is choking on the pollution and crowds. The Local Government Unit that I work for was invited to give a presentation at a Geographic Information System (GIS) conference in Manila. I volunteered [View Full Entry]

Another wedding! Asia » Philippines » Mindanao » Surigao del Sur » Lanuza
Hello Everyone, August has been a fairly quiet month here. A couple of typhoons have passed by out at sea without bumping into the Philippines (Taiwan wasn’t so lucky). The second one was a category 5 super typhoon but it didn’t make the international news anywhere near as much as a hurricane in the Caribbean does. The Philippines will probably get hit by one or two over the next month or so as they start to track further south. That means devastation where they hit land but here we are far enough south that for us it just means rain and [View Full Entry]

Wedding bells Asia » Philippines » Mindanao » Surigao del Sur » Lanuza
Hello from a nice hot July. The big event this month was a wedding where I had to dress up and do the best man thing. Kai who has been working here in Lanuza with the German development service decided to get hitched up to a local lady - Jonnabelle. They are both in the marine biology line of work and met while doing a coral reef survey. The wedding was mercifully short on the service side (Ross and Heather take note!) so we got down to the food and party in record time. Most surreal moment had to be the [View Full Entry]

Snake! Asia » Philippines » Mindanao » Surigao del Sur » Lanuza
The opening picture this month is a very pretty snake that nearly killed me! It hitched a ride on my motorbike probably down from one of the forest sites where we had been that day. If I had seen it while going along the highway I would have probably crashed in panic - I have no idea if its venomous or not but wouldn’t like to find out. It appeared when I pulled into my house, my landlord shouted “Snake” I am looking on the floor to find it until he says “on your motorbike” I parked very fast! Its only [View Full Entry]

I have been getting back to work as normal after doing the tour guide bit while my parents were here. If anyone is thinking of visiting this part of the world I recommend Palawan, the snorkelling at El Nido is like getting inside a giant aquarium. Being in the water with turtles, sharks and stingrays is all very cool. On the work side we have been planning a schedule of activities for the coming year mainly based on implementing the Forest Land Use Plan that I was working on for my first year here. This means we will be doing a [View Full Entry]

magine this - it is 4am on our first night in Lanuza and there is a commotion, the dogs (all three of them - white dog, black dog and brown pregnant again dog) are barking and there are raised voices as the guards are woken. In the morning we discovered that our neighbour had a cockroach crawl into her ear and had gone off to the local hospital, apparently quite a common occurrence. The cockroach was drowned with oil and then removal attempted but they had no aurascope and only removed the body so the next day she had to travel [View Full Entry]
