I came across an online post stating that the B.E.A.C.H is the Best Escape Anyone Can Have. True enough, it never fails. The sun was already high as we left the village of Guinsaanan in Baras, Catanduanes after enjoying a breathtaking morning view at Binurong Point. Our next stop was the long stretch of white sandy beach known to the locals as Puraran Beach. From the highway, we descended towards to the shore. There were cottages dotting the property and trees on the edge. But what was a sight to behold was the wide and long stretch of white sandy shore and the clear turquoise waters. Further, little waves can be seen and we were told that during surfing season, the waves are really good, majestic in fact such that this area has also been known ... read more

One way of getting to know more about a place is to explore its myriad of flavors. Since the island province of Catanduanes is rich in marine resources, it is no wonder that their daily staple would consist of the choicest fish such as tangigue, lapu-lapu and malasugue. The people are also into raising cattle and planting corn and nuts. We sampled the sticky rice cakes such as ibus, suman latik, biko and muros (rice cake with coconut meat). We also had dishes such as kinilaw or fish ceviche (fish chunks in vinegar and coconut milk with spring onions, tomatoes, shallots and carrots), grilled fish, kusido (fish soup with tomatoes, onions, cabbage and calamansi), humba (sweetened braised pork), lobsters, nilaga (boiled carabeef in lemongrass broth) and beef tapa (carabeef). The marketplace is also teeming not just ... read more

The whole surroundings was dark save for the faint light coming from distant lamp post and the muted lights in the resort's hallway. Our group was up at 4:00 in the morning and we waited for the traysi driver to pick us up and take us to town of Baras in Catanduanes. The ride was estimated to take about forty-five minutes. However, the traysi driver wasn't too familiar with the road going to Binurong Point that we had to make several stops along the way to ask for directions. We were aiming to get to the peak of Binurong Point before sunrise so we could watch the sun make its ascent. But every stop for direction was a minute lost in making it to our schedule. But I guess it was better than totally getting lost ... read more

Whenever a typhoon is about to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility, you will likely hear or read about Catanduanes in the news. It is no surprise since the island faces the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It has become a gateway of typhoons, hence, earning the monicker "The Land of the Howling Winds." Catanduanes is an island province in the Bicol Region located on the eastern part of the Philippines. Despite being on the path of typhoon, the island is teeming with bounties of Mother Nature. There are two airlines that fly to Catanduanes. Philippine Airlines flies from Clark International Airport thrice a week while Cebu Pacific Air flies from Ninoy Aquino International Airport four times a week. It would probably take around five days or maybe even a week to see a little ... read more

Virac is the capital of the island province of Catanduanes. It is a big town covering sixty-three barangays or villages. Upon touchdown, we (my group) made our way out of the airport and walked a few meters to Kemji Resort and Restaurant where we were billeted for the duration of our trip. We had breakfast while planning our trip with some locals we've been introduced to. Then, it was time to explore a bit of the town. Getting around Virac means taking the traysi, the main mode of transportation in town. Our first stop was the Virac Cathedral or the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Renovation was underway and a new section was being added to the edifice, making the structure of the cathedral a mix of the old and new. Just across ... read more

I'm back in Virac after spending a week at Puraran Beach. The trip there consisted of a one and a half hour Jeepney ride from Virac to Baras and then a 5km tricycle ride from Baras to the beach. The tricycle drivers originally wanted 150 pesos (about $Au4) for the trip, I offered 50 pesos then sat down to see who'd crack first. One guy then gave me the story about how expensive petrol was etc so I said there's no way a local could afford to use the tricycles if that was the real price. He then dropped the price to 100 pesos and said that if locals use the tricycles they usually have 5 crammed into it, I'd be having it to myself so it was classified as a special trip. Fair enough point ... read more

Went back to the San Miguel beer festival on Sunday night but it wasn't as good as Saturday night, the bands weren't as good so I didn't stay long, in any case I wanted an early night as I was leaving for Tobaco in the morning. Monday morning I got a mini van to Tabaco and checked in at the Casa Eugenie hotel, it's the best place I've stayed at so far. I had a little apartment with a kitchen, louge room, bathroom and bedroom. It was air conditioned, had cable TV, hot showers and the room rate of 1,300 pesos (about $34 Aussie) included a good breakfast. I then withdrew some money from the Mero Bank (my bank in the PI) ATM and took a walk to Tobaco Port to check out the boats for ... read more
