This was really an amazing amazing place! To get there, one has to climb up and down what looks like rubble, but is actual stones and gravel and sand made by moving glaciers sitting on top of more glaciers. It was pretty cool to realize what I was actually walking on. What was not so cool was that it was difficult to find the path and not get lost in all that rubble. Fortunately there are ducks put up everywhere and if you look carefully enough, they appear from all the other rocks. There is definitely no shortage of rocks in this place. From Everest Base Camp, there's not much that you can really see. Most guides and people say that climbing Kala Patthar is enough, you can see everything from there. This is mostly true. ... read more

Ha ha! Just kidding. Although it did feel as though I was at some sort of fat camp for 3 weeks :) Most people I talked to felt the same way because of all the trekking and the lack of weight-gaining food available. Yay! I just got back (safely thankfully!) from Everest Base Camp and two small mountains (hills really in this area) called Kala Patthar (18,200ft) and Gokyo Ri(17,585ft). It was stunning, absolutely amazing to be surrounded by the world's tallest mountains! There are no words to describe what it was like to be sitting across from Lhotse and Everest, exciting, humbling, a little oxygen deprived.... It is definitely a most wonderful experience to have walked up Kala Patthar and to Base Camp. Gokyo was also just as incredible, may be even more so. One ... read more

I made it up to Namche Bazar yesterday after a grueling climb up to here - about 13000 feet from the last town. I thought my shoulders were going to break and my knees give out. But there were really old Japanese behind me to keep me plodding along! It's absolutely amazing up here! There are incredible views of the Himalayas, including Lhotse, Everest and a couple of others. I have to say that the climb was worth it. Sorry to send a message this way, but thank you thank you thank you for all your emails :) It makes me homesick and miss you all, but it's nice to have such sweet messages awaiting me out here :) I guess this is it until I get back to Kathmandu in a couple of weeks. Hopefully ... read more

AH! The woes of modern life. I just had 3 paragraphs typed out when the computer had some sort of internal error.... anyhow, it was about my trip to Tibet. There are no words to capture what this experience was like. I spent the last week going from Kathmandu to Lhasa, which is about 900km/600mi with about 40 other travelers from all over the world. It took 5 days to cover this distance on what is known as the Friendship Highway. The name sounds great (something the Chinese probably thought up of...), but the road itself was inexistant! Only about 100km of the actual highway was paved, the rest was a very primative road covered with rocks and potholes. The last portion was the most life-harrowing experience I've had in a while. We dropped about 1000m ... read more

This is a journal entry I never got to enter, so here it is! Before leaving for Tibet, I had a couple of days to tour around Kathmandu Valley. I decided to go to some of the local temples that are accessible by foot or taxi. I first went to the Monkey Temple or Swayambhunath (say that one time...I still can't!) early in the morning per the receptionist at my hotel's suggestion. So I get up at 4:45am and head out by 5am. I get lost for about 30 minutes and end up right where I started before actually getting on the right path. Mind you, there are no signs readily available, and some of them I noticed today, are pointing in the WRONG direction! Anyhow, I made it to the temple by some miracle by ... read more

At last we arrived in a place that makes sense, Nepal is everything we wished India was like (although we are reserving judgement on the south of India). The place has less people, less noise, less dirt and a much more relaxed atmosphere and is much more organised in terms of infrastructure. We have spent the last few days in Pokhara which is prettier and calmer that Kathmandu, we are within a few minutes walk of the beautiful lake and can just see the mountains from the hotel if the sky is clear. We hve just come back from a wee baby 2 day trek up to Ghandruk. Now if you go and look on a map you will think that it is not very far, but when you look at the elevation map we still ... read more

I made it! I'm finally here in Nepal :) It's been a bit overwhelming and really exciting to be here, just in the past 12 hours or so. I can't even begin to tell you how crazy it is here, with the traffic that is. I thought the traffic in Bangkok was nuts- here there are no traffic rules, or at least none that I understand. And SOO many motorcyclists! They rule the streets. Also, in certain parts of town, there are monkeys and cows roaming the streets! Gotta watch out for those guys... I'm staying in an area called Thamel, where most of the guest houses are. Hotel Blue Horizon is bit off from the main area and is really beautiful. They have terraces looking over the city. As a bonus, most of the neighbors ... read more

Plus ... read more
