Nothing much has been happening the last couple of days. I’ve been doing my usual routine of working at home or in restaurants, watching movies, and meeting friends for lunch. On Friday Mari and I went to the Radisson for a fancy hotel lunch, and my buddy Rajiv was there. It has been months since I’ve seen him, since I haven’t been hanging out at the Radisson as much since I’m not freezing all the time (now it’s actually getting to be uncomfortably hot). But he remembered me, and told me how he saw me going into Bhat Bhateni recently. I didn’t tell him how often I hang out there just to kill time. He was very sweet, giving us free tea and a 10% discount on our overpriced meal. Tonight I went to Kiran’s for ... read more

A mushy entry. Because I haven’t done this much, and dammit, I am in the mood for one! I’m sitting here listening to an acoustic version of Crush by the Dave Matthews Band. I made a CD for Ken before I left—the My Baby Left Me Mix (how cheesy am I?)—and this song was on it. And for some reason it’s bringing me to tears now. Maybe it’s because I miss Ken so much. And I am so incredibly excited to spend time with him again. I’ve spent all morning online looking for stuff for us to do together this summer. Or maybe it’s because I feel so lucky to have him home waiting for me (even though he makes up stories about torturing my cat). How many people have that in a relationship? Better yet, ... read more

Hey again! I have a little bit of extra time, so thought I would write a little about some of the students I have met at Snowland. Karma Lhamo- a cute little girl! She has a bright red hat which she wears alot, but it has a hole at the top. She doesn't have any hair (because of lice), so it looks really funny- it's very endearing. She loves writing- sometimes I give her words like 'apple' and 'grasshopper' etc, and she will literally spend hours writing them out on a piece of paper! I am also proud of the fact that I taught her the word 'thumb'! There are loads of little children at Snowland who love singing and playing in the playground. They love making things as well, like bracelets out of dried leaves. ... read more

Hello again! Wasn't planning on writing today, but have a little extra time on this ridiculously slow computer! life here is generally very good. There is a shortage of everything, but I'm getting used to it!! School is also going well, although the exams are coming up, so everyone is always studying hard. This weekend I went to the cinema to watch a Nepali horror film called Kagbeni- the sound was so loud (they have make it loud to cover up all the phone calls people get during the movie) so it was quite scary! On Sunday, I also went to Bouddha; there is a Buddhist stupa there. The great thing was that there are not vehicles there, so no hooting! It was lovely- definitely my favourie place in Kathmandu so far. Anyway, that's all for ... read more

Hey again! I'm back... This week has been quite eventful- so much to talk about! I guess I will just do everything chronologically..... On Monday, I was supposed to go to my host family's house, but ended up not going, as they needed to do something or the other, and weren't prepared. Instead, I went to Darbur Square with a few other volunteers, which was great. It is soooo nice, and I really recommend it to anyone who is interested in Hinduism (yes that means you mother!). It is basically quite a small area packed with about 50 temples, many of which are about 2000 years old! It was very interesting to see the temples for all the different gods, and to see where the Kumari lives (the Kumari is a young girl who the Nepalese ... read more

The drama has ceased...for now. I told Renuka and Dinesh yesterday that I am moving out after I received a call from Beejay at Fulbright that he will come with the van on Monday afternoon to help me move my few suitcases. Dinesh asked me to stay at least until I go back to the U.S. in January, but I told them I have to take the place now or I lose it. Renuka didn’t look at me for a while and moped around most of the day. Last night she came and sat with me in my room by candlelight (load shedding for 2 hours). The whole time I thought she was going to burst into tears. She again apologized, said that she has been praying to Sai Baba to repent, and begged me to ... read more

Maybe it’s my imagination, but I think I’m being served less food now since I refused to pay more money. Yesterday Renuka said they wouldn’t give me breakfast the mornings I go to yoga, only tea. Not a huge deal, since breakfast on yoga days was late, followed by lunch only a couple hours later. But I’ve been going to yoga for about 6 weeks now. Coincidence? And since things went down, they’ve only been serving me dhal bhat or chapati and curried potatoes. Yesterday I wasn’t even offered seconds of veggies, only rice. But I’m trying to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing. And we’re still having a party on Saturday for my birthday (I’m paying for the food). But I found a new place to live yesterday and will move within ... read more

I feel like I’m living a Hindi soap opera. The past couple have days have been filled with major drama—yelling, crying, and pleading. I ended up emailing Peter, the director of Nepal Fulbright, to get an idea of what an appropriate amount would be for me to pay as a “paying guest” including rent, electricity, and food. After consulting with several Nepalis, he said 10,000 Rs per month would be generous. Renuka was pissed. Over lunch yesterday she started yelling (okay, maybe just raised her voice), saying, “Peter is very clever man, no? Show me where you can get house and food for 10,000! That is $5 per day! Can you eat in U.S. for $5 per day?!” Umm, no, but the standard of living is completely different. I kept my calm and tried to explain ... read more

It’s amazing how your body eventually adapts to a new environment. I no longer have a hacking cough at night (although I am using a face mask when I walk now), my skin is not peeling or breaking out into a rash, and I rarely wake up with a headache anymore. The past couple of days have been laid back. Friday night I went to a party at Dave's place, a fellow Fulbright. His flat is beautiful—the entire bottom floor of a brand new house near Boudha. They had a tiny Christmas tree set up and lights along the walls. We had little snacks (momos, samosas, fruit cake, and Christmas cookies) made by his cook, Chandra, who someone told me developed a crush on me within the 2 hours I was there. It was a good ... read more
