We got up and had our breakfast before starting day 4. By this time, I fully expected to be tired or sore or something. But I actually felt pretty great. I was still postponing taking the altitude sickness pills because I felt so good. I did try to stretch every night when we got back, nothing major, just getting out the kinks. I was pleasantly surprised at how good I felt and at this point we had done the hardest physical part of the hike with the steep slopes the previous two days. So, really, the trek is mostly just walking. You can take your time, stop as much as you want, and the hike itself is amazing from beginning to end, so you are mentally at peace as well. Today was going to be just ... read more

Today has ended up being much more tiring and challenging than originally planned. I think we have ascended something like 1000m today which at this altitude is tough. Our lodge was again late with breakfast and this time they hadn’t lit the fire so it was very chilly waiting. We weren’t in much of a rush but sitting in the cold isn’t much fun. Finally fed (our porridge was at least lovely & hot) we went on our way. First stop the bakery at the top of the village for 2 chocolate danishes, and then to the tap at the top to fill up our water. We then headed out of the village towards Chhukung. This morning was cloudy and windy compared to previous days but it was warm enough when the sun decided to make ... read more

The room we were staying in opened up into the dining room so it’s unsurprising that we were woken up rather early by staff and other trekkers getting up. The hard beds and pillow that felt like it was made from wood probably didn’t help either. The room was so tiny the beds touched the wall on 3 sides which meant Stephen and I had to sleep apart for the first time since we’ve been traveling. It was a little weird. Fortunately being next to the restaurant also meant that the room was relatively warm so getting up wasn’t too painful. The walk started with an easy descent into Deboche. After just 15mins or so there were around 3 groups of lodges so we needn’t have worried about not being able to find somewhere to stay ... read more

We were in our lodge at Namche Bazaar (11,300 ft). Tea was served at six in the morning and breakfast was ready by seven. Before heading out from Kathmandu, our organizer Mingma had advised us not to take a shower on the way. You obviously don’t want to risk falling sick on a trek like this and would take any such advice very seriously. Also, it’s not easy to take a shower when you are on high elevations. We did spent the night at a lodge in Namche but during a major part of the trip, we were going to sleep outside in tents, without access to any proper washrooms. Secondly, water is not easy to come by in such places, so it’s better to use them for drinking and cooking. It was cold, at eight ... read more

The last leg of the trail to Tengboche was, in my humble opinion, the most difficult of the entire EBC trek. The views, of course, were fantastic, especially coming out of Namche; but I huffed and puffed trying to keep up with Pikay (the guy can seriously move) as we edged towards the monastery of Tengboche at 12,680 ft. The monastery at Tengboche, located 7 feet above 12,680 ft, was built in 1916 by a Tibetan lama and is the largest in the region. It is located in a sort of epicenter of magnificent views, from which can be seen Lhotse, Ama Dablam in all its glory, and Everest in the distance. We attended a puja at the monastery, for which I was late, which led to a slight faux pas on my part when I ... read more

It's been a few days since my last update but I've been pretty tired at the end of the day and gone straight to bed after the evening meal on two occasions and hard to find internet cafes on the others! However we are now in the village of Dingboche for the second of our acclimatisation days so we have an afternoon free and the village has 3 internet cafes. Unfortunately most don't seem to have working USB ports so I am unable to upload any photographs as yet. As we now have something like a daily routine for the walking days, it might be worthwhile describing the daily routine. We are woken (if we are not already awake!) at 06:30 with a cup of black tea. We then have 30 minutes to pack the bags ... read more

REST DAY Dingboche Unusual porridge this morning- 6.5/10 on the NPI- thin, sweet with 1 peanut (???). Todays rest day entails a hike to Chukhung Village - an elevation gain of approx 490m, its supposed to be a 5-6 hr return trip- knowing how these estimations now work it might mean 8 hrs- who knows?? While waiting to head out Dhana and I have an impromptu game of point scoring via an ice hockey/soccer mash up. What's the saying- "Small things amuse...". Anyway... at 0846(precisely), fully sunblocked, all 4 of us pick our way through the icy stepping stone path out of the village. Pass 2 internet cafes- both of whom state they have the fastest internet speeds in the village- we'll see. It's quite icy and snowy along the track but a path has been ... read more

Pangboche (3860m) to Dingboche (4360m) Make it through the night managing to put off going to the yak toilet until 0600. It's actually a very nice toilet and quite peaceful out there in the early morning light. Enough toilet talk... Slow start, we dont leave until 0830, projected time is a 3 hr easy walk to Dingboche. It is in fact pretty easy, we cross the Khumbu Khola, lots of gentle up and down, we follow the Imja Khola pretty much the whole way with the sun on our backs. The way is punctuated by various coloured yaks and sizes- or are they dzopkayu? Take a morning tea break at 0945 - we sit in the sun, very peaceful. Soldier on over flat terrain, take another break, walk a bit further and see Dingboche off in ... read more
