The diving in Maldives was fabulous. I loved taking underwater photos. After the third day of diving I gave up trying to use my strobes and just used the camera and available light. My photos were pretty good. Some of the reefs look good, lots of different corals with interesting shapes and colors. But there is a lot of rubble on many reefs, which is good substrate for growth of new corals, but not so pretty in photos. Fish abounded on all dives, except the first dive today. We went to a beautiful reef with overhangs, current and deep water, perfect conditions but we were skunked for the first time…no sharks, rays, or schools of large fish. Every day we did two dives a day, in the morning except for Friday which is the Muslim holy ... read more

I woke up and looked at my clock…quarter to eight and I was supposed to be at the airport at eight! Where was the wake-up call I had requested? I was the only guest downstairs and something in the kitchen was smelling very good. I asked the young man about the wake-up call and he pointed to the clock. Oh, I hadn’t set my clock to Maldives time…it was only ten to seven. Right on time the driver showed up and we went to the Male airport, only fifteen minutes from my hotel. I was to meet the resort representative in front of the food court and he was going to get my ticket for the seaplane and put me on it. It went like clockwork. The flight was great fun. After twenty minutes we got ... read more

Almost, as Male’ has a nearly rectangular shape. In has only two kilometres long by just over one wide, housing a hundred and fifty thousand people, roughly half the population of the Republic of Maldives, which is capital. In fact much of its surface area is land reclaimed from the sea. But there is no more to gain as the ancient reef is completely exhausted: imported land, buildings, streets and people. Male' is spreading on nearby islands. Villingili welcomes a new development and its becoming the fashionable fifth district of the city. The international airport is in neighbouring Hulhule where it seems that airplanes lands on the foam of the waves. The waste is deposited in Hulhumalé while those fed the bases of a new island. Funadhoo supports oil reservoirs to feed the traffic rolling on ... read more

Maldives was estabished since the 12th century, the Maldives became a British protectorate in 1887. It became a republic in 1968, three years after independence. Maldives has 1,190 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls (200 inhabited islands, plus 80 islands with tourist resorts); archipelago location astride and along major sea lanes in Indian Ocean. Maldives is the lowest country in the world. Its ground level is averaged at 1.5 meters (4 feet 11 inches), and its highest point, a certain spot stands at 2.3 meters (7 feet 7 inches), is the lowest on the planet so Maldivians worry about the possibility of it sinking, especially now that climate change continues to take effect. Ninety-nine percent of Maldives is water. As a Muslim country, Maldives calls for casual but modest clothing. In fact, the shorts/pants and T-shirt ... read more

Goodbye.... It is with a sad heart that I write my final blog (for now anyway...) from Hudhuran Fushi in the beautiful Maldives... I don't know where the past couple of months have gone - it's flown by and tomorrow I return to the UK... at least one dress size smaller (without Gym useage...) and a with a subtle golden tan... until I hit the beach later and turn into a human lobster... I would like to give massive thanks to all my friends who have read, commented and supported me with my blogs - writing them has kept me sane and nearly prevented me (but not quite) from getting island fever!!! There have been many highs and a few lows along the way but I have survived - at times I felt like I was ... read more

Talking of enjoying island life... I cannot believe I am only here for another two weeks!!! My little stint in paradise has gone way too quickly... and to think I didn't think I would like being on a ... read more
