Believe it or not, my time in Japan came to a close and I was set loose to embark on my dream trip through Asia: Casey's Asian Invasion. Ever since I came to Japan I started to envision my trip post JET. It is hard to believe that it has actually begun...and started out with a bang! I was sad to leave Japan. I consider myself the antithesis of Japanese culture, yet over the past 2 years have fallen in love with the country. It has changed me, and I have definitely changed Kabe. Only now is is starting to kick in that I will not be returning to Japan, that someone else is an ALT at Kabe Senior High School, and that someone else is sleeping on my futon. But, when one door closes another ... read more

Well the last few days was an experience and not necessarily a good one - hard to believe that I am saying that about one of the things I had really looked forward to doing along with than working with the Orangutans that is and that was to Climb Mount Kinabalu But when you read on you may be will understand this comment. But lets start at the beginning; we had to endure a grueling 5 hour car journey from Sepilok to Kota Kinabalu. It was the shame the numbness in certain parts of my anatomy couldn't numb me to the sight of the endless miles of Palm Oil Plantations. We drove for 2-3hours with no break in the swathes of forest that had been cleared. It was scary to think how many miles that ... read more

We started from sea level in Kota Kinabalu at 7am on Sunday morning. You can get up to the starting point may ways; big bus, shuttle bus or taxi. We were three people so we joined in on a taxi to take us all the way up to the beginning of the trail. We picked up Dominique our guide at the entrance of the National Park and after stocking up with chocolate we were ready to start our climb at around 930. Tips: Get the chocolate in town as it is very expensive in the park, 3 MYR on the bottom of the trail and 8 MYR at the lodge where you get some food and sleep after the first part of the hike. We were all stocked up and the first day we hiked ... read more

Hello it's Ben. Yesterday we climbed Mt Kinabalu (why is it called 'mount' not 'mountain' kinabalu?). It was one of the hardest things Sarah and I have ever done. Some facts about the mountain. It is 4095.2 metres high, the highest in South East Asia, and we went right to the top! (although the start was at 1563 metres i think) and the area it is in has 4 climate zones. Our first day of walking took us up to a rest house called Laban Rata where you could sleep and eat. It was a 6KM walk up some incredibly steep slopes. The terrain ranged from dry mud, to wet mud, to deep mud! to stones, to large boulders, to shallow streams, and slippery granite rock! and of course any combination of the above! I'm not ... read more

We've arrived in Borneo Malaysia after a short two hour flight from Manila however it took much, much longer than two hours. Mechanical problems with the plane caused a delay of six hours until our "rescue" plane arrived from somewhere in China. Oh, how I love Air Asia! So far our first impressions of Borneo have been lovely. The food is excellent (leagues above the Philippines), the people are friendly and the landscape is lush, green and growing everywhere. We spent a few days in Kota Kinabalu while we came up with a travel action plan, did some necessities shopping and waited for an opening to climb Mt. Kinabalu - the highest mountain (4095m) in South East Asia. Four days later we boarded the first morning bus to Mt. Kinabalu Headquarters, just three hours away. ... read more

What a climb, mount k is done in two days the first day we hiked up to the half way house, 4 hours of lots of up hill!! very steep and rocky path, we arrived about 4ish and managed to to it in just over 3 hours! not bad i would say. Chilled for the night and got some early kip, as we were up at half 2am to start the next part. I got really bad altitude sickness and manged to throw up twice on the way - not nice but managed to keep going and make it to the top. a very hard and gruling trek, but worth it at the top, a totally brilliant end to Raleigh, wicked to actually get up mount k as i have been looking at it for ... read more

Trying to sleep in a room with someone snoring is hard enough for me at any time. Doing it at 3000m with my heart beating like a fecked clock is impossible. So we set off at 230. I was feeling pretty knackered but we had to do it. The climb from laban Rata is very steep. It really was pitch black and again we set off last, which meant we were stuck in a bottleneck for the first hour. But as people slowed down we went past them without having a stop. Soon we were on the mountain with just two people in front of us and a long line of torches and headlamps behind. The stars really do look amazing high up with no light pollution. It was thundering and lightning in Sabah and the ... read more

Got up at 6.00 to catch a bus to Kota Kinabalu park HQ. Catching a bus in Malaysia is not simple. The controllers or drivers on all the buses have ask you where you are going. When you give them the answer all of them seem to be going to that destination. So i say Mount kinabalu HQ, a friendly divers says yes, this way....quickly. I follow him and he shows me to the bus. It's 7.00, the journey takes 2 hrs and I need to be on the waiting list by 9.30. Assuming that when you get on a bus in Malaysia, it will set off is also a mistake. The bus driver waits and waits and waits for more passengers. Meanwhile I see the other buses leaving. So the driver starts his engine, which ... read more

Hey everyone. Thanks for sending me all the messages and letting me know whats going on back home. As for my 3rd phase it went amazing. First we went trekking for 5 days in the jungle. Really enjoyed it. Found it really awesome to set up my own hammock every night, and just living on the bare neccessities. Was definatley difficult at times, we did one 8 hour trekk in rain which sucked but after you finish it there is a huge sense of achievement. We had an amazing trekking guide called Nooh. He is known as king of the jungle. What was really amazing was when he went out to catch dinner. He managed to shoot a gibbon...A VERY RARE INDANGERED MONKEY WHICH YOU ARE LUCKY TO EVEN SEE IN THE DISTANCE EVEN IF YOU ... read more

Auf ... read more
