Sunday 29th April 2018 It is Sunday afternoon and we are relaxing after the best meal of our travels so far. Our splendid Sunday lunch, eaten at one of the top seafood restaurants along the east coast of Labuan (according to the locals who flock here from the town) was awesome. It cost £15 for both of us! It would have been really tops if it hadn’t been a “dry” restaurant as 99% of them are. We drank tall iced smoothies, pineapple for me and orange for John and started with a big bowl of very spicy soup full of chicken, tomatoes, lemon grass, ginger, chillies and more. It tasted very similar to Thai Tom Yam but with more tomato and it was hot! This was followed by a large dish of crispy fried prawns, gorgeous ... read more

Friday 27th April 2018 I am writing this blog aboard a ferry from Kota Kinabalu to Pulau Labuan. It is an old ferry, somewhat cramped here on the upper “Business Class” deck. The gods may or may not know what it is like down below! It is a three and a half hour journey west across the South China Sea and the notice on the exit door warns us that we are strictly forbidden to open any doors to go outside until we dock. This has nothing to do with adverse weather, the sun is shining and the blue sea is smooth. Our cameras and binoculars are put away (the windows are grubby) so we have missed the pretty islands passed by. Malaysians are not comfortable on the sea, we have seen few who enjoy swimming. ... read more

After the week-long detour eastwards to check out the flora and fauna of the Sabahan heartlands, it was time to back-trek and resume my journey southwestwards along the northern coast of Borneo. And so it was a day-long bus ride for another quick overnighter back at KK, before a 3h ferry to the nearby island called Pulau Labuan, a transit point between Sabah and Brunei. Still part of Malaysia, and just off the state of Sabah, but Pulau Labuan doesn't actually belong to the state. Like the capital Kuala Lumpur, Labuan has the special status as a Federal Territory, diirectly governed by the central government. The reason for this, I'm not so sure, but I think it partially has to do with history, and partially with its position as an international offshore financial centre. In any ... read more

Using any mode of transportation for 30+ hours will generally bring you great distances. My mode happened to bring me to the opposite side of the world. The flights actually weren't too bad, but I did have a small panic attack when I woke up in the middle of a 12 hr flight, and noticed that we were flying over Afghanistan, between Kabul and Kandahar, and towards Pakistan........aren't we at war there still? I arrived in Labuan, and I really did not know what to expect. I knew it'd be different. The captain picked me up from the airport and we stuffed my bags into the back of this crappy rental car he had--the trunk and a/c didn't work, and I had 100lbs of luggage and was wearing jeans in the 95 degree heat and 1000% ... read more

So hello from very near Brunei! This will be the 3rd country I visit in 3 weeks! So be warned this blog is likely to be a very long one! I spent a little bit longer in Kota Kinabalu than planned purely because Luke (who has flown out to join me) spent his first night of travelling wandering aimlessly rather jetlagged around Kula Lumpar alone because he missed his connecting flight whilst I sat alone in the very nice hotel i’d booked us into. It wasn’t really the reunion we had planned but 36 hours later than expected he finally showed up. Once he got over the jet lag we headed off exploring some nearby islands before continuing north to tackle Mount Kinabalu. This is the highest mountain between the Himalayas and Papua New Guinea, its ... read more

Well this will be pretty quick so excuse any typos, we're ready to move on to Brunei in about 20 mins or so so just getting another entry completed until we have internet again. Wednesday was another early start, Mac went out to get brekky - bowsers and small pastries that were delicious for next to nothing! We walked to the centre of Kudat, not far really, but already searing at 7.30 a.m. We were very lucky to get a taxi like yesterday but only us two, the driver and his wife so a much more pleasant journey back to Kota Kinabalu, still bumpy but having leg room (and arm room) made a big difference. We arrived in KK before 11 and were dropped off at the ferry terminal, so bought tickets to the island of ... read more

Since I spent much more time than anticipated in Kuching I had some ground to make up on my journey to the top of Borneo. So I spent the next three nights traveling through Miri, Bandar Seri Bagawan and Pulau Labuan (Labuan island).. First stop was Miri. This is still in Sarawak, Malaysia territory. I had two options - 16 hour direct bus journey, or boat trip inland through river to Sibu & 7 hour bus journey from there to Miri. I took the boat option as it's more scenic and I don't like sitting around on buses for hours on end. 7am start, the boat journey was a little choppy as we hit a monsoon. I liked the staffs sense of humour as they played Hellraiser 2 & 3 on the tv while people were ... read more

We left our hotel in Brunei at 9am and headed into town, where we caught the local bus to Muara. Once at the bus station, which was more like a small car park, we needed to decide whether to stay in Muara (as we had read that there were some good beaches there) or head to the ferry port and go straight to Pulua Labuan, both were a bus ride away. We were unsure as to which bus to catch to the beach so we approached what appeared from a distance to be a notice board. But on closer examination it turned out to be Brunei's most wanted board. There were about 12 men on it, all looking like rather naughty boys! So we decided to ask a couple of people how to get to the ... read more

I arrived on Labuan, a tax free island that caters to the oil industry, to meet "Alex" who had promised diving work for $500 a day. (See ) My first call got through to his answering service, so I left a message saying where I was and giving my contact details. My next calls over the next two days didn't even get the answering service. I sent an email to Alex and Teresa and found that they were in the same situation and had just left the island in disgust. I waited around for another day, enjoying the cheap beer and meeting the local Filipinos but not much else - it is, after all, a port and oil town. Back in Kota Kinabalu I caught up with Alex and Teresa and we had a chat ... read more
