Im fairly certain that in the week that we have been here we have not seen one full set of teeth. The tooth fairy must be retired somewhere in the bahamas on a catamarahn after visiting this country.
Well it hasn't even been a week but it feels like a month. I guess in our heads we thought it was going to be a little easier than what it actually is. We just assumed that there was going to be a bus system that circles the country and conviniently drops us at the door of the hostels we are staying at. Alas this is far from the case. The movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles doesnt scratch the surface of the rigmaroul (is that even a word, or is that just somthing random my mum used to say) you have to go to in order to get from A to B. You get a plane to the state your going to, then catch a cab to the train station, then get two buses, then get in a random car that claims to be a cab driver but who
Sampling the local cuisine
No dogs were harmed in the making of this satay stick actually has to drop his kids off at school on the way, then you walk 8kms, then you finnaly get to your destination but its too late to do anything so you sleep so you can get up in the morning and leave first thing to do it all again. In fact im not sure that weve seen anything other than scenery passing by us from the inside of a vehicle. But that was quite nice...
Our first stop in Kuala Lumpur was quite a culture shock for Kym. Having been her first stop in an Asian country (and a heavily populated muslim one at that) I should have perhaps told her before we spent the day sight seeing that you shouldnt walk around town in your bikini.... No it wasnt that bad it was a singlet and jeans but without a lie im pretty sure she caused 7 car accidents. We would be walking through the middle of bustling downtown and as we approached the whole place would go deadly silent and begin to stare at us only to be broken by the sound of some Chinesse guy wolf whistling. Now she knows how i feel back home.....
My old place
so thats whats at the end of the rainbow not the Chinesse guy! I think she's slowly getting accustomed to it. Hard life
Our stop after that was Bintulu, a place where i had spent a year in my early teens. How do i descibe it??? its a dump. Its an oil rigging town where it seems the last tourist that stopped here was me. We spent the day touring the town and looking at all the old places that i remember from when i was a kid like the local supermarket, my old house and the park were we used to sit and throw rocks at the locals. The day came to a halt when we get accosted by a rabid dog that was foaming at the mouth to get a piece of Kym.... just like all the other locals.
We spent the next day in Simalajou National Park and did a 9km hike where i had my first experience with leeches. After taking my shoes off to have a shower, the little suckers were having a red hot crack at my feet. Very disgusting, but kind of cool. Kym saw a gibbon and i didnt see shit.
Niah national park was next and we visited an
enourmous cave system that we exlpored until we nearly passed out from amonia poisining from all the bat shit. Its about a foot deep in some places and the cave itself is pitch black. Probably shouldnt have worn thongs in retrospect. All in all its been a good week.
After that stop we are ushered onto a bus by a midget who looked scarily like a Malaysian Tattu from Fantasy Island. I wish i took a photoThis was meant to be a hub for our travels to another cave system and then more hiking, long boat cruises and long house visits but we have decided to blow that off and spend the next three days chillaxing on the beach in Kota Kinabalu and doing some snorkelling. Hoping to climb Sth East Asias biggest mountain next week but accomodation is looking unlikely. Might have to come back another time.
Right now we are sitting in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah doing some snorkelling and working on our melanomas.
The next few email will hopefully detail our run in with Orang Utans but ill talk more about that later
Thanks for all your comments we always look forward to reading them so keep
them coming. We will try and write back to them all when we get a moments rest.

your photo of "beach thingy"
Is called a hermit crab. Around here people keep them as pets. You can find them on beaches on our side of the world. I didn't realize that they didn't exist in Australia... unless you really knew what it was, in which case ignore this comment please.
