Hello my fellow travellers! What a day this has been, and I don't mean that in the amazed-and-dazed-way but rather in the god-what-a-day-of-chaos-way. The day started out well, I slept excellent and woke up rested and ready. Me and Chandra began by going back out to the hike trail and go for a short walk, on the way back we again came upon a flock of macaques and I managed to get quite close to them although one of the larger males started acting aggressively so I backed off. Afterwards we went into the colonial centre where I took a walk on my own while Chandra ran some errands. It was unfortunately a bit cloudy today but even so I could really appreciate the beauty of this place. The first thing I went by was the ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! This morning Rizqin dropped me off at the bus station where we said our goodbyes with hopes of meeting again in the future. I told him truthfully that he'll always be welcome in my home, and since he is fascinated by Viking culture I gave him a promise that if he comes to visit I will take him on a round trip in Scandinavia to follow in the footsteps of the Vikings. In Taiping Chandra was a bit delayed but there was no troubles waiting at the station, I had excellent weather there where no people pestering me, I really appreciate that about this country, there are no droves of people trying to scam you or cheat you in any way. There is an aura of honesty and sincerity about this country ... read more

With me playing sucker dj and navigating our way out of Penang, Dean did a sterling job of driving the family truckster along the freeway to Taiping. In the left lane, vehicles were doing anything from 60 km/hr to 100. In the right lane, the average speed was probably 150 km/hr. With the limit being 110, and with advice from the concierge at the Mansion - "Ask for a receipt if pulled over by the police, they are corrupt." - fresh in our memories, Dean was zig zagging our way towards the old tin mining capital. Luckily traffic wasn't too heavy and we found ourselves in what was also the place where Chinese secret societies flourished last century by early afternoon without causing, or being in, an accident. The town centre reminded me a little of ... read more

It's been a week, so here's an update. We spent a few days exploring KL and visited the bird park and Batu caves. The caves have a number of Hindu temples inside and we were made to feel very welcome with a free and rather tasty lunch offered to us by local families serving food at the temple. Inside the cave we heard many bats and saw jungle millipede, a giant centipede, a cave racer snake and many cockroaches! Around the city we noticed locals carrying sandwich size plastic bags filled with a suspect yellow liquid. We were baffled for a few days as to why so many Malaysians would have catheter bags....until we clicked that it was iced tea! On Monday we started our cycling. On our bicycles we turn many heads, car drivers have ... read more

David here... We walked to the train station from our hotel and caught our train to Taiping with no problems. We then made our way to the New Champagne hotel on foot. This turned out to be a good 30 minute walk and when we got there the room was not great. Clean enough but it smelt of cigarette smoke and was very basic. We got settled in and aired the room out and then headed into town. The main town centre was pretty much your typical Malaysian town. With Hawker stalls and restaurants everywhere, spilling out into the street. It was very much like the rest of Asia accept that the driving was better and more courteous and there was no honking of car horns all the time. We wandered round for a while, just ... read more

Day 33: Taiping to Lumut After a late night of drinking, playing with kids and watching the Olympics, we woke up really late, around 11:30. We quickly checked out of our sheisty hotel and returned to the fun food court from the night before. It was still packed with people, as it had been when we’d left at 2 AM. We enjoyed pork noodle soup, the first pork we’d seen in Malaysia, for breakfast. It was the most splendid Sunday, and we departed around 1, reluctant to leave this gorgeous area. Families were playing and picnicking by the lake in the park. But the day was so lovely, it was also a perfect day for biking, despite intense heat and humidity. It was one of those days that make you thrilled to be alive, really. We ... read more

Day 32: Burkit Merah to Taiping We began the day biking along the highway but after only fifteen miles spotted a sign for the zoo. The zoo!!! I wonder what animals would be at a zoo in Malaysia? J wondered too. So we detoured, and rode ten miles off in another direction to the zoo. It was fabulous! We got the ticket agents to hold our bags in their little ticket booth, and locked up our bikes in the parking lot. We saw giant Malay cats, civets, lizards, barking deer, crocodiles, monkeys, rhinos, giraffe, zebra and elephants. We enjoyed seeing the reindeer get fed, watching the zebras and the bulls break bread together and seeing the mama and the baby elephant cuddle. The monkeys and chimps were unfortunately depressed, but I think thats common for monkeys ... read more

I'm back on the computer again, hopefully with long enough to get down everything I want to and check for the numerous typos that I make. The state of my last blog was frankly appalling. I shall try harder this time. Zoo Events As I mentioned before, I've been placed on the African savannah section of the zoo. Just for two days, this placement, which is OK with me as there isn't really a great deal to do here. Not that it isn't a packed section of the zoo - a large enclosure with giraffes, zebra, ostriches, flamingo and an ankole cow requires a great deal of upkeep and husbandry. It's just that unqualified volunteers can't be allowed to do a great deal with such dangerous creatures. The giraffes and zebras are pretty safe, and I ... read more

It's been a little while since my last blog, as I have been a busy little zoo man. I have many things to witter on about, so today I'm going to be efficient and use headered subsections. Marvel. The Zooniverse Been having a fine but utterly exhausting time of it at the zoo. I spent three days with the chimps, which was a bit of a chore as the main ape keeper clearly doesn't like having volunteers there. Rather than tell us what to do and correct us if we get it wrong, he just takes things off us and does it all again. Doesn't seem to realsie how much extra work this generates. His name's Ankol Mani, but I hust call him Captain Chimp. Still, playing with Julie is great fun, and throwing the food ... read more
