MELAKA (MALACCA) HERITAGE CITY, MELAKA, MALAYSIA. Saturday 25 February, 2012. This morning we were off quite early to take the motorway down to Melaka (or Malacca if you spell it the English way). The City of Melaka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the Straits of Melaka. It has been occupied and controlled by the Portugese, Dutch and the British among others throughout its interesting history. All have left their mark on the city. We arrived and found our way to China Town fairly easily. We cruised around for a while wondering where we could park when we stumbled on a car park at the top of Jonker Street for just 3 RM (60p) for the whole day. Our next stroke of luck was to bump into an Ozzie couple who told us how ... read more

Malaysia – Melaka – A quiet little historic town that suddenly exploded with people during the bank holiday!! After a flying visit to Singapore (another blog to follow) I jumped on a bus and made my way back to Malaysia to visit a town called Melaka. Whilst in Malaysia the first time I didn’t have time to visit the South so with a few spare days before I fly to Oz I decided to make use of the time by heading back for a quick visit. I only planned on staying three or four days but I liked it so much here I ended up staying for seven. I guess that’s one of the best parts about travelling, within reason when you find somewhere you like you can just stay longer or in some cases get ... read more

Driving half the length of peninsula Malaysia is always going to take a long time. Luckily on Chinese New Year's Day the vast majority of people were already visiting relatives so we had a fairly clear run all the way - until we got South of Kuala Lumpur. Then the heavens opened, visibility was reduced to a minimum, the traffic started to crawl but still several drivers thought they could drive like idiots. Thankfully we avoided any trouble and never witnessed any accidents. After about 5 hours we reached Melaka, or the outskirts at least. Then the traffic ground to a halt! Eventually we parked up at a posh hotel to enquire about their rates (way beyond our budget!), left the car there and walked towards town to find some accommodation. We looked at several options ... read more

I didn’t know what to expect, I’ve stopped reading the travel guides and decided to ‘wing it’. I knew we had to head back to Kuala Lumpur again and dreaded every step that brought us nearer to the dynamic city as it only drew nearer the fact Carl and I would soon be going our separate ways. Mightily I forced the tender thought in to the back of my mind and focused on the ‘now’ in order to enjoy the time we had left together. So we decided to take in a few places on the way after Singapore and Melaka was one of them. I saw it on the map in small letters and Carl insisted he had read wonderful things. So we went. It is always a daunting prospect to go somewhere new especially ... read more

Saturday, 31st December 2011 ~ Monday, 2nd January 2012 We decided to spend the last day of 2011 in the city of Melaka, some 240km away from where we were in Singapore. Our 8am Luxury Coach departed on time from Concorde Hotel before we were held up for a good 1 hour at the understaffed Royal Malaysian Customs. Apparently, only 4 out of the 12 check-points were in operation this morning! Visitors' traffic wasn't heavy considering the long weekend festive crush. It was just a matter of speeding things up a little during the immigration clearance. Along the way, our bus stopped for an uneventful 20 minutes at Yong Peng Lucky Gardens before continuing the journey towards Melaka City. It finally dropped us right at the lobby of Equatorial Hotel slightly after 1.40pm. Coupled with another ... read more

As much as I was able to get myself around Malaysia yesterday with great aplomb, I was an equal part completely lost today. It was still a good day in Melaka, Malaysia though. I had a little bit later of stat today, but walked myself into the main part of town and decided to take a 45 minute river cruise to get myself situated. It was okay. It was along the waterway through a part of town, so the most interesting part was to see the houses along the way. After the cruise I set off for some sightseeing. The main thing I saw as Stadthuys which was a building the Dutch built when they occupied the city. It now houses a museum about the history of Melaka (I have found the history with all the ... read more

Today was the day that I proved I would be a formidable team member on the Amazing Race. I got up a little earlier than usual, had a light breakfast at the hotel, and then caught the 8:30 bus to KL. The first two hours were incredibly windy. After that it was mostly highway. We got to KL around 1:15. I thought it would be a simple transfer within the train station to get the bus to Melakka. No. I get off the bus and then have to ask for help several times. Mind you that this bus station was an indoor area, though rather modern, with no air conditioning. Turned out, I have to take KL’s version of the metro about seven stops to get to the correct train station. Then I can catch the ... read more

We knew coming to Malacca was going to be a slower pace of life and that it was. We spent 2 nights there wondering after the first afternoon what we were going to do. We managed to find enough walking around the UNESCO Heritage Village and Chinatown but wouldn’t recommend more than 2 nights here unless you want a lot of relaxation on your trip. We were able to add to our Asian art collection with a handmade wooden Malay mask. This part of Malaysia was settled by the Dutch and Portuguese, all the red buildings in Malacca were built by the Dutch. This is also the first place we have ever been that is a Muslim country, which means we hear prayers on the speakers across town 5 times per day. Highlights of Malacca -Quiet ... read more

Apologies to anyone who has been waiting for further updates on the blog. After leaving Asia I went to Australia for two weeks and because everything there is expensive I couldn't spend long on the internet whilst travelling. Now that I am back in New Zealand again I will continue: After Taman Negara (where I saw tapirs....just reminding you) I had given myself a couple of spare days to go to Melaka. If you are old like me, or have some older books, you may know this town better as Malacca. Its about two hours south of Kuala Lumpur. The reason I was going there was partly because I can't stand KL and partly because I wanted to visit the Melaka Zoo. So I took the earliest bus from Kuala Tahan (at Taman Negara) to the ... read more
