Malaysia was the start of my solo travels after saying goodbye to Liam and the main thing for me going there was to detox after several weeks of excessive alcohol abuse on the various Thailand Islands, so the plan was. Travelling down from Krabbe I booked a cheap minibus to take me to Penang and like everywhere else I have been to, I did no research on the Island. I sat next to another Brit who got on the bus who had been partying the night before and still had face paint all over the place. Ashley was heading to Penang as well and didn't really have an idea where he was going to stay, so a quick search on hostelworld.com came up trumps with a decent place and on arrival headed for there. However thats ... read more

I've never realised how much effort is needed to get a laptop out and force myself to do this blog. It's a bit like school when you're told to do your homework over the weekend and you sort of leave it till late Sunday night when you've had all weekend to do it. At least I haven't got a teacher marking me down for this, don't think I could handle the red marks all over it...... Anyways Mongolia was where I left the last blog and that the capital Ulan Batar was a modern city that surprised me. One thing that really got me was the fact that the previous year the government had banned the selling, buying and smoking of cigarettes 100 metres of a government building, school, college or university. This meant that as ... read more

80 days of travelling and from day one, I have wanted to start a blog telling every one of what I'm doing and also to remind myself in years to come when the memory starts going exactly where I had been, people I had met, places I had seen however I have put it off. So why now? Detox! After all these weeks of going from place to place, one thing that you can guarantee when you arrive is that someone will ask you the basic travellers questions of 'where are you from?', 'how long have you been travelling?', 'where are you going next?' and then ask you if you need a beer. Too many places where I have said I will start blogging has ended up with me crawling in at 3 in the morning ... read more

Getting from Mandalay, Myanmar to our next destination Langkawi, Malaysia was slightly long winded but made easier as we caught a flight from Mandalay to Bangkok and then another one to Hat Yai where we settled for the night. Hat Yai was not what we expected. Arriving at night this place was buzzing. Lots of market stalls selling food, cheap clothes all side by side next to many high end malls. Throw in some rats and some suspicious looking women hanging around on street corners and you have Hat Yai. Next stop Langkawi, Malaysia. In order to get to Langkawi the following morning we caught a tuktuk to the bus station, then a coach to Satun, another tuk tuk to the ferry terminal, a ferry across the Thai border to get into Langkawi, and then a ... read more

Langkawi was probably the most relaxing part of our trip so far. After a short flight from Kuala Lumpur we were only 45 minutes from the airport and our accommodation was beautiful. Ambong Ambong was a small hotel with 11 individual villas which were built on the side of a very steep rainforest hillside where monkeys would come to visit you on your balcony as we were at the same height in the tree canopy. Every week all hotel guests are invited to a cocktail party hosted by the hotel owners. Special clothes were left in each villa which you were requested to wear. Girls outfit was a sarong and for the boys it was fishermen trousers. This was a great way to get to know everyone, guests and staff alike. All food and all drink ... read more

24/1-15: Arrived in Kuala Perlis around 6 in the morning at got on the 7 am ferry which took around 50 mins. I slept all the way. Got a teksi (thats just how they write taxi there) to Rainbow Lodge on the west coast and got a couple of rooms for 50 RM. Nice relaxed place, the Turkish chef started talking Danish to us by surprise, he had lived in Denmark for 40 years. Next thing we hurried to the beach where I could not stay awake at all and slept most of the day in between some nice swims. We had dinner at a nice restaurant right on the beach, a big bbq plate for 30 RM with some fresh fruit for dessert while watching the sunset and listening to live music from next door. ... read more

Its not long since the last blog, partly because the last blog had been delayed by lack of internet as we cruised the south of the Langkawi Islands and a need to use up our remaining internet before we leave Malaysia in the next day or two. The second day at Rebak Marina was really the last day of the rally. It started with a ferry to the main island, to our tour bus and a visit to a rice museum and its own padi fields. Then we had some “free & easy” time to look around the souvenir/duty free shops at the main tourist strip at Pantai Chenang. We enjoyed a relaxed lunch as Alex was being baby-sat by Kerryn & John from SV Esoterica. Back on the bus to visit a batik producing studio/shop ... read more

From the small island of Pulau Talang all 4 boats were on the move before dawn for the long day of 60 miles to Penang. It was mostly motor-sailing except for the last couple of hours before the island when the wind picked up. Then we were dodging several fishing nets until motoring under the bridge - the longest in Asia I believe - before turning left behind Jerejak Island, about a mile south of where the others yachts had congregated. On our way we had discovered our plans of getting Thai visas in Penang were scuppered as the King’s birthday was on friday so the immigration office would be shut - pooh! We could have so easily left a day earlier from the Pangkor Marina and now we would have to hope we could sort ... read more

Langkawi, Malaysia WOW…I think we are in the Caribbean! Warm, humid, beautiful green, lush island surrounded by high peaks and mountains. Lots of little islands jutting out of the water towards the sky all around us. Today we are visiting a Rice Museum which may sound a little boring, but it turned out to be one of the most interesting places of our trip. We saw rice fields in various stages of maturity, water buffalos that work the fields, all of the equipment and tools necessary to grow and harvest the rice…and chickens all over the place. Life here is as it has been for many years. Rice is still planted by hand, harvested with scythes or long knifes, beat by hand on a wooden stanchion to separate the rice from the stalks, and ground to ... read more
