Day 6 It was an early wake up for today's adventure of snorkeling at Pulau Payer Island. We still had time to enjoy our coffee and breakfast on our balcony watching the early morning birds on the roof of the buildings and mesmerized by the hues of the ocean before we set off. The clouds looked dark and thunder could be heard bellowing in the distance. On the bus ride over the rain began to pour, we weren't worried, having seen Malaysian thunderstorms before not lasting too long we figured it would rain now and leave us with blue skies to enjoy our snorkeling. Waiting with lots of people for our ferry ride, the rain eased off and our journey was over calm waters getting closer to those blue skies we had hoped for. The ferry ... read more

As check out was at 11 we wanted to get one last swim in the infinity pool abnd check out the view during the day. Although the city lights of Kuala Lumpur were spectacular the city by day was nice in it's own way. KLIA 2 airport is small and cute as. So many little shops, it was like a mini shopping mall. The plane ride to Langkawi was just over an hour. With our little meal (chicken spaghetti) and water it was over so quickly. Langkawi airport was tiny and there were people waving signs and yelling about car hire. We ordered a Grab, it cost $3 AUS. The resort front lobby was nice and our contact greeted us within a few minutes. Taking us by golf car to our accommodation I checked the ... read more

Day 5 A lazy morning of cooking breakfast (after messaging for milk and butter) and not doing too much except back and forth messaging to our contacts regarding the room debacle. Nothing had been resolved so they offered us a cab driver for free for the day. We were off to the Skycab, which is a cable car that takes you high up the mountain for panoramic views of Langkawi. The peak of the mountain was covered in clouds and we deliberated about whether we went up or not. Asking a few people who had exited the cable car about the view they told us there were some good patches inbetween the clouds. Initially we weren't sold on it and I felt grumpy, mainly because we were originally going to go the day before after arrival ... read more

Ahhhh. This one is different. In giving some thought to what to capture about Langkawi as we leave for Penang, I find myself thinking of the people interactions more than the tourist sites. So am going with it. Goy, one of our homestay hosts, invites us to pop around the corner to their black door neighbour to buy some coconuts. The modest money would make a difference to their family, we’re told. A diminutive grandfather greets us with a grunt and smile revealing some uncertain orthodontury. A wee girl in only superman underwear stands hold a flowing hose under her chin, like you’d do a buttercup. Shower day for her. Her bright eyes follow us as we pantomime some questions. The old fella takes a long bamboo pole with a metal hook on the end and ... read more

Our best efforts to remember the little details of our last Asian trip had us turning to our travel diaries to answer some of the basic questions we had forgotten. And so little were these details, I didn’t record them. Getting cash, easiest modes of transport, foods we enjoyed, whether we need our own towels, and did we eat lettuce or take ice cubes at restaurants. It all blurs after a little time has passed. Our trip to Malaysia started with an overnight in Kuala Lumpur, and the airport itself made us stand up and take notice. Well, look at you! The whole thing has a modern, almost hip vibe. Every rise in the place is a wide ramp - no stairs. Why doesn’t every airport do this? Each departure gate is in separate glassed room, ... read more

Sommer, Sonne, Sonnenschein Ich beiße in meinen grünen Apfel.

In the afternoon after arriving in the Cameron Highlands, we went to a nice little place to have tea and strawberry scones (the region being famous for tea and strawberries). On the next day, we had planned to go for a walk in the tea plantations before going to Penang but I had been sick all night and when Shaun woke up, he was sick too. It was probably food poisoning and it kept us inside the hotel all morning. After that, I felt too weak to walk for long so we didn't see much of the Cameron Highlands apart from what we saw from the bus. In Penang, we were a bit disappointed to see that the Penang Hill was closed. Floods had destroyed some of the cable car equipment and trees had fallen on ... read more
