Background: During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Great Britain established colonies and protectorates in the area of current Malaysia; these were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. In 1948, the British-ruled territories on the Malay Peninsula formed the Federation of Malaya, which became independent in 1957. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colonies of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo joined the Federation. The first several years of the country's history were marred by Indonesian efforts to control Malaysia, Philippine claims to Sabah, and Singapore's secession from the Federation in 1965.

Ajo [View Full Entry]

Lento tänne kesti Kuala Lumpurista n. tunnin.

KUUMA
Auringonlasku Chenang Beachilla

We've had a very pleasant week on Langkawi, just chilling out and using the bikes to explore the island. We arrived here last Sunday and after disembarking at Kuah, the main town, we headed west to Pantai Cenang. Initially the road was flat but we soon hit some lumpy bits - the first real hills since we landed in Singapore. As we were cycling along it started to rain. I shouted to Joy that we would stop at the next cafe which was about 100m away. By time we reached it it was throwing it down and we were quite soaked. [View Full Entry]

Our last day in Thailand and we were up early hoping that enough passengers wanted to go to Malaysia and the boat would be going! We missed breakfast as we wanted to get an early start but made a pit stop at the 7-11 for milk en route. Once we arrived at the port we got our passports stamped and headed for the jetty.. however as we speedily approached the pier there was very few people about! Surely someone wanted to go to Malaysia! The driver told us we needed 10 for the boat to go.. so far they had sold [View Full Entry]

Spent a few nights here in Langkawi. Enjoyed it so much! We're staying with a friend who lives out here and she has a spare apartment - having the apartment to ourselves has been beyond amazing! Made me remember what it's like to be living in civilisation again and not be in a hostel/guesthouse. We even cooked our own dinner last night which was beyond exciting! Although the food here's great, being able to cook something that your used to is fantastic. Went up the cable car here to the top of the mountain, was sooo humid and felt a bit [View Full Entry]

Langkawi We spent 3 nights at Koh Lipe, got great sunburns then moved on to Langkawi Island in Malaysia by speed boat.( we did have to wade up to our hips in water, with suitcases in tow to get to it via a longtail boat which looked like it could sink at any moment). There were 48 people that went with us all of which needed visas to Malaysia. We started about 2:30 in the afternoon and finally began loading at 4. It took about 1 hour of actual travel on the water flying over the waves. When we arrived at [View Full Entry]

Luscious Langkawi and Irresponsible Tourism Wednesday 18th March 2009 The Langkawi group of islands should be one of the jewels of the Andaman Sea. The islands are mostly covered by lush jungle where large groups of monkeys chatter and play and tropical flowers abound. The beaches are white-sand coral and the sea is turquoise, blue and green, dotted with limestone stacks, craggy cliffs and numerous small islands. However, the Malaysian Government wants Langkawi to be Malaysia’s Phuket and they are succeeding fast. As a result, in many parts of Langkawi, jet skis and speed boats chase [View Full Entry]
