We left Vang Vieng and headed to Laung Prabang where we caught a long slow ferry up the Mekong River, for 2 days stopped halfway at a little town on the river and made it to Huay Xai, we had a day there before starting our Gibbon Experience so we went sapphire hunting. A tuk tuk driver took us out to some farmer and we panned for saphhires. Next day we had to drive 3 hours into the Bokeo Reserve and then we got told all bout the Gibbon Experience, pretty much its a village project that they are trying to conserve the forest from all the poachers and the Gibbon Experience money goes towards this project. They have ziplines everywhere through the canopy of the forest and there are treehouses, we had treehouse 2 (also ... read more

This was absolutely awesome. Brilliant. Quality. Kawaii (cute in Jap). 2 Minute Noodles On a side note however - the 2-day slow boat trip from Luang Prabang up to Housieau was brutal. I am definitely now travelling and no longer holidaying. Despite the teasing of fellow travellers when they hear how I'm flying from Bangkok to Hanoi that I'm a "champagne travller" but well I have nothing to prove by travelling 4+ days when I can do it in 2 hours. The boat broke down so we ended up staying in this tiny village (where I think we had the only 2 light-globes). I felt absolutely wretched on this boat with fever, seasickness and cold sweats. Those damn malaria tablets are killing me. So I wasn't at all happy when the head villager, I'm assuming, came ... read more

First things first I am so sorry this has taken so long. First we were waiting for photos, then my diary ran out and I couldn't find another one, then there was a hurricane, then a tank ran over our local internet cafe. Also, I just got lazy. Apologies for that. Right, this one is a big bastard so I don't blame you if you can't be asred to read it, but you should do because it's taken me all day to write!!!!!!!!! One more thing before I start - You see those little icons at the top of the page that look like strips of film? Well this is a new option that Travelblog have introduced where you can upload video clips. To view them just click and it should open up automatically. Enjoy. Ok, ... read more

Hello Everyone, I would first like to say the Gibbon Experience is a must for ANYONE who finds themselves in Northern Laos. This was one of those "Best things in life" but unfortunately "not free" ... however, well worth the money spent! This is going to be a long one but good :) I promise Before I tell you about this amazing jungle adventure I would like to tell you now because we are out of Laos the warm welcome we had! I didn't want to mention this earlier for my parents and for Mark's sake or anyone else who might be worried reading it. When we arrived and got on our first bus I failed to mention the man wearing a lovely, brown, long shirt with an AK-47 poking out of the bottom. I instantly ... read more

Apologies for the delay in finishing of our blog but finally here’s the last leg of our trip to SE Asia: Laos was an a slight detour that wasn’t originally part of our ‘itinerary‘. The reason we ended up there was due to a Canadian couple we met in Cambodia who enjoyed it so much and spoke so affectionately of it that they effectively talked us into going to see it for ourselves. A decision we are now very glad we made. It wasn’t a great deal of hassle getting there as we would have had to have flown over Laos to get back to Bangkok anyway. First a quick flight from Ha Noi took us briefly to the capital Vientienne from where we boarded a small propellered number which rattled and shook us the rest ... read more
