SORRY FOR THE DELAY PEOPLE So week 6 kicked off with a late arrival in Thakhek, thanks to a broken down bus in which we think someone stole our fucking camera. Little bastard. 1am in the morning and we share a tuk tuk in to the town with an English couple called Rich and Lucy. They are also planning on doing ´The Loop´, a 350km round trip through mountains around most of central Laos. We met the next day for a chat about how we were going to tackle this little challenge and met a Canadian lad named Ben, who was also about to take on the trip. We all thought that a little entrouge like this would hold us in better stead for a safe and enjoyable time. So now with myself,Ryan, Andrei, Snaedis, Rich, ... read more

I spent x-mas day in Thakhet - using the internet, shopping for clothes (found some great shorts) and generally hanging out at cafes and the guest house. The evening was spent around a pit fire at the guest house, chatting with other travelers. An enjoyable day all around! On the 26th, I decided to rent a motorbike and try to travel to the Konglor cave, a distance of more than 160 km one way. Although they call them motorbikes they are more scooters - no clutch and 4 gears. Although the speedometer maxs out at 160 km/hr, I only managed to wind it up to 90 km - maybe my own fear stopped me? Anyway, it was a cute red bike with green spokes! It had rained the evening before and there was a strong cool ... read more

Merry xmas to you! It's the 25th and I am in a Thakhet restaurant, a little sunburned, but otherwise healthy. I left Vientiane on the 22nd to go to Thakhet in south central Laos. I arrived in the early evening and focused on renting a hotel room and getting some dinner. I am at the Travel Lodge - a decent guest house that is not linked to the american chain of hotels. On the morning of the 23rd, I joined a fellow traveler, Garret, from the Netherlands, for breakfast. He was preparing to leave on a 2 day trek to visit several limestone caves and to spend the night at a small village in the jungle. I called the tour company and managed to join the trek on short notice. Then some fast packing (stuff to ... read more

En route we'd read about a 450km round trip you can do by motorbike called 'The Loop'. It's a sort of box-shape route that takes you into the more remote areas of central Laos. We checked in to the "Travelodge Hotel" (not the sort you're thinking of), and had a look through the piles of guestbooks written by those who had done The Loop. Our initial research led us to conclude that 3 days was not long to complete such a distance, given the rugged terrain. Add to this the rainy season had just started and a lot of the route was on mud, and that Paula hadn't really done any off-road riding, and that the only maps we could find looked like it had been drawn by pirates, I had some concerns. However, all the ... read more

Well we have just returned from a 5 day motorbike trip doing a circuit called the loop. The trip started in Tha Khaek and in an anti clockwise direction took us along dirt roads, forest tracks and up into the Annamite mountains within 30km of the Vietnameese border, and then through limestone karsts possibly some of the nicest scenery so far. The places we visited were very remote and the people were not used to seeing many tourists at all, getting a recognisable meal that you fancied eating was quite a challenge at times. The chain broke on the motorbike and we had to push it app 2km, then a young man repaired it for us it took him about 45mins inc going to fetch a new joining link, he charged us 10,000 kip (11,500 = ... read more

After our doubts nearly got the best of us, our guides arrived in a tuk tuk with our three other trekkers (a Swiss guy, and a Canadian/Thai couple). One of the guides spoke very good English, the other a bit, and off we headed. Just being picked up raised our spirits a bit, and it seemed our companions were a good bunch. Then the rain stopped! The tuk tuk drive took us back towards the Buddha Cave and then on for another half an hour or so. The bumpy dirt tracks had been further enhanced by deep puddles and incredibly slippery mud, and before long we had to leave the tuk tuk behind and revert to trekking proper. The scenery was even more stunning, the dark, towering limestone outcrops clothed in vegetation where the slopes allowed, ... read more

Through feats of sheer human strength we tipped ourselves out of our hammocks (clambered back in once whimpering, and then tossed ourselves out again with greater resolve) to head north to lands of (slightly) greater activity. Laos is in general the most laid back of places we've ever come across - at times you feel guilty ordering food in a restuarant or enquiring about a room, forcing the poor owners to reach some level of activity. But the effort of leaving Si Phan Don had to be seen to be believed - a mass of slumbering tourists standing on the beach with three long boats in front of us and the two 'organisers' randomly assigning people to boats, recounting, checking tickets constantly with a questionning look on their faces - after being the first on the ... read more

Ok now we finally have the proper chance to update our blog - I believe the last proper update was written around the time of Miss Teen Thailand 2009... an exciting day all round... since then we have travelled on into Laos and have carried on having a fantastic time... from where we left off last time I’ll fill in all the main bits... From Chiang Mai we took a kinda ting to Lampang on some bus or other which took a while... It looked really close on the map, about 1cm away... When we arrived we held up a Sawngthaw (a glorified pickup with benches) and searched the city for a place to stay... After an hour or so we discovered TT&T get hao which was a sight for sore feet... Nice place, nice owner, ... read more

I spent a night in Pakse which was a pretty boring little dusty town and then headed out to check out the sites along a plateau along town. We saw a few waterfalls, some villages (including one that makes coffins), a tea plantation and some other things. It wasn't all that spectacular of a day, although the waterfalls were pretty nice and I did enjoy swimming in them. The next morning I went to the 4,000 islands which was great! I took a few hour bus and then hopped on a boat. I arrived and found a little guest house that was run by 'mama' who turned out to be insane! It was located right on the river and had tons of hammocks to just veg out on! The islands were so nice because although there ... read more

Superbowl or 4 day dirtbike trek....Superbowl or 4 day dirtbike trek? This was the difficult decision i was faced with this past week. But the fact that Superbowl started at 6:30 am here and there is a severe lack of interest in "American football" and therefore not a lot of places that would even be airing it here meant that we were soon on the road on a Honda FTX 223 cc dirtbike heading South from Lao's capital city of Vientienne. Riding a motorbike is not uncommon here and it is very easy to find numerous places that will rent you a scooter for dirt cheap. Finding a proper dirtbike with an engine bigger than something you might have on a lawnmower back home is not all that common so once i saw a place that ... read more
