So after two nights in Pakse, I made the trip eastwards to the Bolavan Plateau, specifically to the village of Tad Lo, famous for its waterfalls. The bus from Pakse was headed towards another town called Salavan, so to get to Tad Lo I actually had to get off halfway and walk another couple of kilometres. There was actually a motorcycle taxi waiting at the junction between the roads to Salavan and Tad Lo, but being the cheapo I was I didn't even enquire the price, and just decided to hoof it. It didn't sound like a particularly remote or quiet place from the LP description, but when I arrived it soon dawned on me that Tad Lo, while not exactly off the beaten track, was not a typical tourist spot either. On a eu ... read more

Oh my god, we step out of the minibus after having had a great catch up with some really great English girls to be faced with Ellie and Ade the guys we met in India and traveled with for 2 weeks in China. So random, after many squeals of delight and much jumping up and down we spent the next few hours (5) catching up on each other escapades and laughing at the fact that they had 'done' Cambodia in 5days!!!!! Unfortunately they were heading off to Vientiane and we were heading out the following day to Tat Lo so maybe we will meet in Thailand?!! Didn't get swindled by the the tuk tuk driver and didn't have to pay a different price at the bus station. Hurrah!! 25'000 kip to Tat LO, come on!! Actually ... read more

We took an overnight sleeper bus from Vientiane to Pakse, a dusty (again) town in Champasak, a southern Lao province. A sleeper bus! This was such a luxury, albeit one that probably defies most modern safety regulations. Not that that's any different from most travel here. The bus had wide bed berths on either side. You climbed into bed, under your provided blankets and pillows and snuggled in for the ride. We were given sausage and vegetable dumplings for dinner, and I fell asleep watching the moon cast slim columns on the asphalt and listening to Terry Gross interviewing Tina Fey. Podcasts do wonders to make extended travel sustainable. We spent a day in Pakse eating real, down home Lao soup, featuring a host of organs from at least four different animals, and watching the Champasak ... read more
