100cc of Honda 4 stroke power - No faster than 90km/hr - Averaging 30km/hr… You don’t want to go any faster. Off the main road there are potholes, when there’s good roads there are other hazards… young children running across the road, ducks, chickens, cows, dogs, buffalo, other cars, motorbikes, chickens, roosters, snakes and pigs. The need for concentrating is at a premium. After 3 exhausting days this was the best activity I did in Laos. Pakse in the south of Laos is the last major city before you hit Cambodia. At first glance it is a nothing place. A major transport hub, it is the start and finish point of a brilliant motorbike journey to the Bolaven Plateau. $15 a day to hire, it takes in another part of Laos. This is the less hidden ... read more

Hi Here is my first attempt at a blog.... pictures and a catch up to follow for where we've been so far. We're in Pakse at the mo which is in southern Laos, about to fly to Cambodia on xmas eve and spend a week in Siem Reap. Siem Reap is home to Angkor Wat and lots of other ancient temples and we're really looking forward to it. Palse is a bit sleepy and just a stop off before we hit the good stuff in a few days; had a bit of a hairy moment yesterday when no cash machines or exchanges were taking visa and thought we'd be stuck here but all sorted thank goodness. Doesn't feel like xmas at all! Really really hot down here and not really a lot of festive cheer, not ... read more

We've only been in Laos for nearly three weeks but i feel like i really belong.... could this be my spiritual home or was the milkman a little darker and shorter than i recall? Top five reasons why I was born (to be) Lao 1. My dancing fits. Village disco at Hmong New Year and we're ALL doing the stiff chicken with the stuck out bottom 2. Unbelievably I'm ok and can work with 'Lao time'. A bus at 8am means any time from twenty five to eight to anything in the eighth hour. It makes sense and it genuinely doesn't bother me (really!!) 3. The humour fits. Funnies about monster tuk-tuks, wild jungle rattan to make chairs WITHOUT the spikes, would never work at 'home', but here they go down a storm. Especially when hand ... read more

I know I mentioned that Vang Vieng was known for its tubing (drinking), but I only participated 1 out of my 5 days there sans tube. It was incredibly fun, but far from the safest place on earth (made clear by the countless bruises and bandages you see around town). There is a bar about every 100 m, each equipped with its own device to jettison you into the river. There were water slides, zip lines, platform jumps, and a trapeze-like swing that is about 25 ft high. The biggest problem is that most people there have been drinking all day, and there is no one to stop idiots from getting on or tell them where the water might be too shallow. Anyhow, everyone in our group made it down unscathed. Vang Vieng was an interesting ... read more

Ethelassa ollaan. Aloitettiin valuminen tanne Vang Viengista tiistaina. Jalleen paastiin kokeilemaan uutta menopelia. Neljan tunnin reissu Vang Viengista Vientianeen (Laosin paakaupunkiin) taittui sawngthaewlla... ..eli kyseessa oli avolava-auto, jonka lavan paalla oli katos. Todella og tyyli matkustaa. Matka meni nopsaan, mutta teki jalleen hallaa meidan tottumattomille prseille. Vientianessa oltiin pari yota ja koska paakaupungissa oltiin, asumusten hinnat olivat kohillaan. Otettiin 2h huone, ilman omaa kylpparia, tvta, ilmastointia, ja ilman oikeastaan mitaan muutakaan 7 eurolla yo. Pari paivaa Vientianessa vierahtivat levatessa, mekong-joen varrella hengaillessa ja massaillessa. Kaupungista loytyi nimittain ensimmaista kertaa koko Laosissa, todella freesi kauppa, josta puolestaan loytyi herkkuja, joiden paivaykset eivat olleet viela menneet umpeen!!! Juotiin esim. MAITOA!! ensimmaist... read more

Am now sitting in Pakxe bus station in Laos waiting for the bus to Vientiane. Have been a few days in Cambodia and a few days on a small island called Don Det in the 4 thousand islands of Laos. The internet is so slow down here so I have to make new blog entries about those places later. Here in Pakxe there is nothing to do but randomly we stumbled upon an amusement park where we did some riding in bump-cars and crashed in to all the kids. Could have bought some local delicaties but didn't want to risk it, starting to get a cold. Have been in contact with my travel agent to try and sort out all my changes for new dates. Hoping to get around a month in Oz, 2 nights in ... read more

So we took a sleper bus overnight from Vientiene to Pakse, in the south. Sleeper buses are great, all busses should be sleeper. It's basically bunks on a coach. Mike & I were in a double bunk on the bottom. What a way to travel. If aeroplanes were sleeper, the journey to Australia would be nothing. Although I guess it would be a bit awkward if you were traveling alone and had to share a bed with a total stranger! Arriving in Pakse we got a tuk-tuk to town and rather by accident checked into a pretty nice guest house. It had aircon and clean sheets! Non stained/torn sheets are hard to come by around these parts. It was expensive, but we went with it anyway. It had a balcony which was a real sun trap ... read more

hello, massage, welcome.... now i am alone in the small town of Pakxe in laos, having travelled here from north-eastern thailand yesterday. after my last blog from hat yai 4 weeks ago, it has been a rather drama filled time! i took the bus from hat yai to phuket, a slow 6 hour journey on winding roads. it was made worse by the driver being in a inappropriate race with a competitor company's bus on the section between krabi town and phang-nga town. resulting in several sharp brakes and swerves, much to mine and fellow passengers chagrin! phuket town has one of the most stupid locations for its bus station (and in asia there is a lot of competition for stupid bus station locations). it's right in the south east of the town, whereas as nearly ... read more

Hey Hey Hey! As we wait for our laundry to dry, let's blog! We made it to Laos! We decided to shell out some money and save a lot of time by flying to Laos instead of waiting for a visa in Cambodia, then taking a three day bus trip to the border. We flew with Laos Airlines, and about thirty minutes after taking off we were landing in a new country. We certainly enjoyed our time in Cambodia, but felt it was high time we saw Laos, a place universally lauded by other travelers. Every single backpacker we have asked about Laos tells us more or less the same thing, "You're going to Love it, Laos is so CHILL." (emphasis added.) Unsure exactly what "chill" means, we embarked on our quest to find out ourselves. ... read more

The Southern Swing Nibby- We arrived in Pakse and Matt had somehow managed to talk me into doing a 5-6 day motorbike tour around the southern area. We spent the first night in a posh hotel called Champasak Palace Hotel because we only needed to take small bags with us on our bike tour rather than our big packs and thought they would be safe to leave them here (great excuse to have a posh hotel for a night!) Day 1-Pakse to Tat Lo Next day we went into the town and found two Suzuki 110cc bikes for hire, which seemed to be in pretty good condition. Being my first time on a motorbike it took a little getting used to but I soon found my confidence and we were on our way! Once out of ... read more
