Si Phan Don is a landlocked archipelago in the Mekong, just above the Laos border with Cambodia. Its name means 4,000 Islands, a notional rather than strictly accurate indication of the profusion of sandbanks, islets, and full-blown islands in the area. Reaching it was a tedious process. The guesthouse in Pakxe tried to tell us there were no seats available on the minibus, even though we'd booked them. Then we had to pay extra for a boat trip to our island of choice that should have been included in the original ticket price. And then the skipper appeared to be inexperienced at navigating the river, resulting in us running aground several times. Don Khong is the main backpacker haven, but we'd opted for Don Khon (yes, just a g of difference) instead, hoping for more tranquility ... read more

We left Phnom Penh in the early afternoon, retracing our steps 75ks to Skoun, (home of the deep fried wolf spider by the way), where the road splits off to the east. It was a smooth ride, pretty trafficy close to the city but we didn’t exactly get up and out early to avoid that. After a great day of riding the sun set on us so we turned on our lights and continued on for a few km. At one point Nikki lost sight of the edge of the road and went off into the dirt breaking one of the clips on her rear pannier in the process. Instead of fixing the clip we checked out this little store/restaurant across the road. We talked to the owner and asked if there was a place for ... read more

Hi from Kanchanaburi, Thailand, the site of the infamous bridge over the river Kwai. We've been exploring the area after a week of complete relaxation and catching up with my parents in Hua Hin which I'll cover in the next blog in a few week's time. In the meantime, my last blog left us on the way to Laos, staying in the small border town of Stung Treng. This was a town that I passed through on my way south to meet Danielle in HCMC, so I was looking forward to similar adventures this time as we travelled north. The bus dropped us off late afternoon after a 10 hour trip from Phnomh Penh and we made our way to the only neon-lit place in town (must be as a result of 2 months in China ... read more

as it implies in the title of this entry, I am done as in ill but I shall start at the beginning and bear in mind that even though some bad things happened yesterday I'm fine now... ominous I know! okay so I got here Tuesday and met this Aussie girl named Isabelle and we bought tickets to go to Don Det and Don Khon for Wednesday then we went for a walk in the blistering sun. Wednesday I get up and don't feel that good but I assure myself that all I need is some water and a little something to eat, so I eat and drink. When I get to the boat I feel worse and want to stay behind but I go along anyways. About halfway there I start to puke over the ... read more

hanging out in 'dong khong', having beer, playing badminton with locals. also rode bicycle to the end of the island down a muddy road, then halfway around the island. Hiaku for the days bike ride= bicycling dong khong rice harvesting everywhere ass hurts, back too, HOT!!! also booked transport to cambodia. we were able to negotiate a slight discount for the trip but it was too little for all of the problems. one van takes us to a point near the border. then a second takes us to the laos immigrations. after much confusion and standing around, a group of people, some were already at the border, board another van (the 3rd for those of us leaving dong khong). the bus then stops for reasons unknown to us travelers. while stopped the van stops running. not ... read more

With our 15-day visa in Laos quickly coming to an end, we needed to start making choices based on time management. We decided to forgo earlier plans to visit the Plain of Jars, which is Laos’ site of archeological mystery and intrigue, a kind of "Laotion" Stonehenge. As the name reflects, the Jar of Plains is an expanse of fields, filled with variably sized stone jars of unknown origin. The largest one weighs 6 tons and the jars are believed to be around 2000 years old. Research has been challenging due to remnant landmines and other ordenance, which is just recently being cleared. Archeologists from all over have proposed theories to explain the random stone jars but all remain speculation. Local legend, our favorite explanation, claims the jars were made for the fermentation of rice to ... read more

I added some pictures to the last entry, make sure you take a look. We had a change in plans, and decided to go see Cambodia before we went through Vietnam. This allowed us to see Southern Laos on the way. We to had a "VIP Bus" from Vientien down to a southern Laos town Called Pakse. The bus was an overnight ride, about 11 hours long. The bus was certaintly VIP, but with a lot of flavour of Laos culture. Each window had pink curtains with turqoise ruffles on top, there was a tv up front blasting kareoke or Lady Boy comedians, we had stewards wearing weird little uniforms going up and down the isle bringing us food, and the outside of the bus was pink and yellow! Once it came time to unload the ... read more

Trek to waterfall Uphill, downhill. Pretty steep Lots of stamina! This morning we had an early start and a bit of a morning "hike" with our tour leader Mr. Ling. On the agenda was to walk through a coffee plantation and visit two water falls. There were some pretty steep sections to climb both up and down. With all the dry leaves strewn everywhere it made it a bit slippery. Damn my sandals are like ice skates! The first waterfall we came to was the one opposite where our bungalows were situated. The second waterfall we actually were able to go in for a dip and boy was that refreshing! Quite the reward! There was an optional afternoon hike that only myself and Penny opted to do. This hike went up to the plateau. Nothing too ... read more
