A very busy few weeks have passed. I've been working overtime about two hours a day for the last two weeks helping my students prepare for the speech contest. Since I work at two schools, it was a little bit difficult. I think one school definitely had an advantage because I have been working there longer this year. My students at the small school did not have as much time with me. Also, that school is not as into the speech contest as the other one. Two students from each school participated. There are three different categories: 7th and 8th grade recitation, 9th grade recitation, and speech. I had students in all categories. From the smaller school, I had a student in the 8th grade doing a recitation (basically he memorizes a found passage and recites ... read more

Last Saturday, Rachel's landlady threw her a little party so us ladies decided to get all dressed up in yukata (summer version of kimono) in the pretense that we would head into town for the matsuri (festival) that night. We stayed at the party a bit late so missed all the festivities but didn't miss the opportunity to walk around Tottori in yukata! Pics will best explain this experience...haha. ... read more

Just wanted to introduce you all to one of my favorite past times here in Japan. Purikura - derived from "print club" which in katakana English is pronounced purinto kurabu プリントクラブ so it's the shortened version of that Basically you get into a photo booth with your friends (or by yourself), pay about 400 yen (roughly $4) and you take pics with a HUGE variety of backgrounds! There's also a voice of high pitched Japanese girl guiding you through your photo shoot, which can get annoying at times, but it's pretty quick so you deal with it. After you're done taking pics, you get to decorate them and write whatever you want on it. The pics get printed out, you can choose how many you want and what sizes. They are essentially sticker photos so ... read more

Had so much fun, decided to blog about it for a change...haha! Friday night, hit up English cafe with Onika, Megumu, Noriyuki and Rachel. Granted, there were some oddballs there, but we had fun and I got to meet Megumu's cousin and mom so that was really cool!! We went out to dinner after, but I already ate since I made a huge pot of curry the day before and still had leftovers. I just had sweets at Cafe Piace! Saturday, started off early...8:40am I went to Minami Jr. High School which is literally 10 minutes away on foot from my place because my students were playing a game there! I don't know what possessed me to get up at that hour on a Saturday morning, but I did want to see my kids play. The ... read more

It's a bit daunting to think about how much time has passed since I've been here. It feels like I've been here for ages, but it hasn't even been a year, yet that kinda sounds like a long time ne? A lot of ALTs are leaving the program this year so I've been hearing about their plans to go back to their home countries and also about how there really are only two months left and then a bunch of new JETs are coming! I'm at a completely different place than them though, because I still have at least another year here so I'm not bitter or frustrated or ready to leave like some. I just have to try not to let them get me down. Granted, a lot of them had good experiences, it's just ... read more

Today was graduation and I managed to work it out so I went to Konan's graduation instead of Koto's. You all saw how much I love those 17 kids who are graduating, I HAD to see them one last time before the all went off to high school. The ceremony itself was pretty dry and a little hard to get through because it was all in Japanese. Good thing I knew when to stand and bow though. Also, at least it wasn't too cold today because otherwise the gym is just unbearable. There were speeches by the principal, a guest speaker, a representative from ninnensei and a representative from sannensei. Each of the students got to accept their giant certificate from kocho sensei because we are such a small school. Of course we sang the school ... read more

I am sitting here at work on a Saturday...why?? Today is PTA day so parents will watch classes in the afternoon. The good news is that there is no school on Monday to make up for us being here today. I don't know if I mentioned this before, but in Japan, kids go to school on weekends as well as the teachers. They do bukatsu (club activities) and don't go to classes. So really, they are in school ALL THE TIME. I don't know how they do it. I can't see American kids going to school just so they can practice football or whatever sport they play every day of the year. Three months of summer vacation does not exist here. It's very sad. I am supposed to have four classes today, but am not going to ... read more

I am switching to the big school next week. Of course there are pros and cons to this situation. I will definitely miss the school where I am now because I've gotten closer to the students and the teachers here. I'm not as lost in the mix as I am at the bigger school. I can actually joke with the teachers and they are even more willing to speak to me in English. Overall it's just a more laid back atmosphere. At the bigger school I am a lot more shy...if you can imagine that, mostly because I don't feel comfortable enough to talk to all the teachers there. BUT, I do get more work at the bigger school and more variety in the activities I can do. Teachers are more open to new games and ... read more

Yesterday, we had our dress rehearsal for the English play, Wyrd Sisters, we are putting on here in our city. Needless to say it was a loooong day, but it is exciting to see things coming together finally! Lately I have been pretty burned out from play practice especially last week because we had three practices instead of just two. It's amazing how one extra night can put a damper on free time. I just felt like all I did was go to work, go to play practice and then go to sleep and the pattern would repeat the next day. It made me not want to get out of the house even when I did have a free night because I wanted to sleep or just relax. This week should be a little better because ... read more

I leave for the Philippines basically tomorrow night...slightly freaking out? Nah, just the usual anxiety that comes along with traveling overseas. At least the Philippines isn't that far away nor does it require a drastic time change..just one hour behind! Woo! I'm excited to see my family and eat Filipino food! I haven't had a decent meal since I was back home in Minnesota. I rarely cook here...and I really should learn while I'm in the Philippines so I can dazzle everyone with the goodness that is pancit. Or lumpia or adobo...I'm getting hungry just thinking about this! It is getting a little bit harder to motivate myself to work because I keep thinking I get to be in 70-80 degree weather for the next two weeks! Saw the first snowfall (I think, at least technically) ... read more
