Former Navy Underground Headquarters It was a little rainy today so the Memorial Day picnic I planned on attending was canceled. After thinking about what opportunities were available on Okinawa in which I could remember the ultimate sacrifice paid for by members in the US military, it seemed appropriate to go to one of the battle sites. James, Aaron, and I drove down to the Former Navy Underground Headquarters which was used in WWII. Although many of the signs were in Japanese, I was still able to learn about the horrendous conditions and radical enemy which U.S. Marines encountered and fought against. I highly recommend this be a stop for all those who visit Okinawa. The Battle of Okinawa was the last battle of World War II and it turned out to be the bloodiest as ... read more

Okinawa for us is a place, one would never think ever existed in Japan and our 5 days of exploring these vast islands was well worth every penny and a weekend away from the busy and hectic life of Hong Kong. Okinawa is located between mainland Japan and Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean. This place is considered to be an International resort destination because it has its own natural settings. From what I've heard and read, Okinawa was once an independent nation known as "Kingdom of the Ryukyu Islands" until they were occupied by force by the west Japanese clan known as "Satsuma clan". After the invasion Okinawa was officially recognized as the Japanese prefecture (administrative district). Okinawa is also home to US navies and the presence of the US militaries in this area began at ... read more

Sushi Zen I had heard about Sushi Zen since coming to Okinawa, had ventured out with a friend to find it during our lunch break, but had never managed to locate it. Well...a couple of weeks ago I finally discovered it's location while being certified to dry suit scuba dive. While prepping all my gear for the dive I was pleasantly surprised to see that Sushi Zen was right behind me! A few weeks later Edwin suggested we go check it out so I was all for it. Sushi Zen is definitely an American oriented restuarant. On it's front door there is a Japanese sign that says "'No Japanese". Turns out that if a Japanese person wants to eat here they must pay an initial fee of 50,000 Yen and then 100,000 Yen per year thereafter. ... read more

Scuba Diving - Mama San Beach The weather is getting warm on Okinawa and that means dive season is starting up again. I began the spring dive season with a trip out to Mama San Beach on Ikei Island. It was a bit of a drive but it was really enjoyable with the sun out and the winding roads on Ikei Island. To access Mama San Beach I had to pay 1,000 Yen (roughly $11) but that's a pretty good deal considering the beach is very clean, the water is crystal clear, and there are bathroom facilities readily available. After prepping my gear and suiting up, we headed into the water. It took my group about 10 minutes to kick out to the drop-down point. The entire way out there was nothing but sandy bottoms with ... read more

Scuba Diving - Tengan Pier For my second dive I went to Tengan Pier. This was the first time I dove here so I wasn't sure what to expect. It took about 30 minutes to reach the end of the pier. We were fighting against the tide so it took quite a bit of energy. It's not usual for my calves to cramp up on me after swimming strenuously but today my quads cramped up a few times. No big deal...I was too excited about trying a new site to have some cramped muscles stop me! Once we reached the end of the pier we dropped down and the current actually carried us off the pier. Because the visibility was about 7 feet my dive group and I didn't realize this. We searched around for a ... read more

Transit Cafe After the morning service at church today, James and I went to one of our favorite restaurants on Okinawa...Transit Cafe. James took me to it several months ago and it has become a restaurant we like to go to on a monthly basis. He is really good at picking new places to go to so I know I'm always in for a treat! This restaurant is a real hole in the wall...it's located along the seawall on the second floor...but it's always busy whenever we go. There are a few tables inside and 3 tables outside (they can be hard to get sometimes). The lunch menu is pretty limited (seafood curry, grilled chicken and salad, beef tenderloin, and a daily pasta special) but all the dishes are incredible fresh and light. I have never ... read more

Kurishiki Dam James and I decided to relax on Saturday by going to Kurishiki Dam. This is an awesome park just a bit north of Kadena with paved trails to walk on, a open grassy area to play on, and lots of trees to seek shade under. Surprisingly, even though this is located extremely close to Kadena Air Base there aren't many Americans that visit. Of the few people we saw, they tended to be Okinawans. It was very quiet here and that's something James and I enjoyed most. James and I spread out a blanket under some trees and spent the afternoon "people watching" and talking. Even though it was a bit warm out, the trees gave us just enough shade to keep the temperature comfortable. He and I plan to go back when the ... read more

Sushi Go-Round James recently came back from a 3 week business trip so I decided to take him out to a sushi go-round I recently discovered in Okinawa. My good friend Aaron showed it to me during our lunch hour a couple weeks ago. Instantly, I knew it would be the perfect place to take James to grab some lunch after our morning church service. For those of you unaccustomed to what a sushi go-round is, it's basically a restaurant with a conveyor belt circling the room. Patrons can pick off small plates of sushi (normally 2 pieces per plate) from the conveyor belt as they pass by. It is a fun way to eat and it allows the customer to eat exactly what they want. Keys to having a good sushi go-round in my opinion ... read more

Sam's Anchor Inn To celebrate James' return to Okinawa after a long business trip, we went out to Sam's Anchor Inn in Ginowan. It's website claims it is the "first and still largest Teppanyaki steak house in Okinawa and Japan's most famous Teppanyaki restaurant." All I know is the food is goooooood. Everything inside is themed as a Navy ship so there were portholes on the wall, wooden helms in several locations, swashbuckling swords and old wooden pistols hanging on the walls, and a staff dressed in sailing attire. We were served mango kimchi (spicy! but delicious), followed by Navy Bean Soup (sure wish this was served on some of the ships I've been aboard), salad, and the main course which is traditionally teppanyaki steak. Teppanyaki (鉄板焼き, teppan'yaki) is a style of Japanese cuisine that uses ... read more

Ryukyu Glass Village I've been on Okinawa for nearly 2 years now and while shopping out in town I've seen colorful glass designs (cups, saucers, dishes, vases, mugs, bowls, etc.). After doing a bit of research I came to discover that these wonderful pieces were part of traditional Okinawan glass making and there were multiple factories around the island that I could visit. So...I finally decided to go visit one of the glass factories to see the artisans at work and I had the pleasure of James' company too! We decided to visit the Ryukyu Glass Village in Itoman because it was the largest glass factory in the Okinawan prefecture. This allowed us an opportunity to see a wide variety of techniques and many different artists. We first visited the shops and James found one tiger ... read more
