November 9th - Kyoto Today we were off to Nara Park, stopping first at the Gekkeikan Okura Museum, where they explained the process of how to make Japanese Sake. This distiller has been making sake for over 400 years. One thing that I found interesting was that the best sake was only 500 yen more than the next best. Naturally I bought a bottle, unfortunately after sharing a couple of glasses I will have to leave a half full bottle in the room; the maid can have a good day. When we got back on the bus they had small sealed cups of sake for us; no way as good as the best so we gave them to waoman on the bus (she collected about 10 and didn’t make it to dinner - no the sake ... read more

Day 2 in Japan This morning’s authentic Japanese breakfast found four fellow kindred spirits two of whom were sympathetic with last evening’s plight. They too experienced difficult dinner companions and vowed to avoid a repeat! Off to visit Temples, Temples, Temples … water purification, tossing of coins, burning of incense and general adoration for Buddha! The highlight of my morning was the identification of a tea plantation, though from afar. There is only one tea plantation in Charleston, SC,America. Never let it be said that the Japanese lack balance … we visited a Sake distillery before noon. Although we were unable to meet the Toji (brewmaster), we learned much about rice polishing, yeast fermentation, and moldy rice preparations. Kyoto is proud of its pure mountain water and tastes of their reserve sake yielded a pleasing early ... read more

We took a day trip from Osaka on the train to visit Nara, a nice little peaceful city of 300 odd thousand people and famous for its series of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and an old imperial palace. Nara is also where hords of tame deer roam the city, the deer are regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, and roam the streets and parks freely. Whilst they didn't give me any messages, the presence of these creatures seemed to increase the calming impact of wandering around this very green city - I guess they stop people driving too fast too! We started off at the main attraction of Nara, the Tōdai-ji or Eastern Great Temple, a Buddhist temple complex containing the Great Buddha Hall, which is the largest all-wooden building in the ... read more

As you may know, the US carpet bombed Tokyo in World World II and spent the next 30 years after the war financing the rebuilding of Tokyo. That is why much of Tokyo is modern and there is very little of ancient Tokyo that still exists to visit. So while in Japan we visited other destinations such as Kyoto and Nara to see Ancient Temples and Shrines. You can get to Nara by train in about 30 minutes from Kyoto. We were told to treat it like a day trip, so we arrived in the morning and took the train back in the afternoon. Most of the memorable sites exists inside a large park called the Deer Park, which is said to be the home of 1200 deer. As you can see from the pictures, the ... read more

I am now a solo traveller once again...hostelling it...hooray! Before I left Sachiko and Namiko, we went to a small town called Nara. It used to be the capital of Japan many many years ago. Deer roamed the streets and liked invading your personal space. We visited the world's largest wooden building...it was quite overwhelming...not to mention the giant gold Buddah that sat peacefully inside. There was a vertical wooden beam at the back of the building with an arch shaped hole cut out from it at the bottom...this was to show the size of one of the Buddah's nostrils..kids could climb through it and even one lady who just about made it through! So now I've been exploring Japan alone...and already I'm loving being a free traveller again! On my last night in Kobe I ... read more
