It was an extremely early start! We were up around five am and headed to the bus station to buy our tickets. We made sure that we arrived in good time, as there was something we really wanted to try. When we had been in the bus terminal yesterday, we had spied a wall of vending machines, most of them were pretty normal, like what you would find back home, however, there was one that looked amazing. It was a machine that actually vended hot meals! This is what I think of when I think of Japan, a vending machine that can do anything. We had perused the different options yesterday, the machine had quite a selection, and we had decided that fried rice would be our best bet. We deposited our coins, 360 yen, quite ... read more

To the average Westerner such as myself, the Japanese language can seem quite daunting. The whole time I was in Japan I thought that 'jō' meant castle as in Matsumoto-jō is Matsumoto Castle. Not exactly, at least according to the ultimate source for all translations... Google. But if I told people I was going to Matsumoto-jō they understood. I think 'shiro' might be the actual word for castle. After the Alps I spent a few days in Tokyo which was fine, albeit brutally humid, and not nearly as expensive as I was expecting. Last Thursday I flew to Vladivostok, Russia, yesterday to Irkutsk, tomorrow to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, then no more flights for nearly the next 2 months. Matsumoto Matsumoto first appeared sleazy as I initially spent an inordinate amount of time in the seedy ... read more

Pak mě ještě berou autem k jezeru, protože jedou do Matsumota a přeci to nepůjdu pěšky :). Oblékám tedy další... read more

Neodmítám tedy takovou nabídku a ještě chvilku odpočívám. Kolo mám k dispozici do večera a zdarma. No páááni, to je super. Přijížd&... read more

Po cestě začínají pomalu stoupat stěny sněhu lemující silnici, až nakonec těsně p&... read more

Takayama We had planned two stops in the alps region. Due to hostels (again!) we could only stay one night in Takayama. There seemed like a lot to see and do in and around Takayama so it was a bit of a shame, but we had a lovely time there. It was also our first time in ‘real’ beds for a while! We had a family room with bunks. Our hostel was only a short walk from the two ‘traditional buildings preservation areas’ so our first afternoon was spent wandering around the Sanmachi-suji (district). We wandered a few streets of restored/preserved merchant shops and private houses. There were several sake breweries (breweries closed, shop open) and plenty of tourist type shops. It was lovely wandering around. The next morning we headed out again on foot starting ... read more

On Thursday my plan was to head to Kawaguchi-ko, a lake near the base of Mt Fuji. I had decided on Thursday because the weather forecast on Tuesday suggested it would be the finest day of the three I had to choose from. I had to catch a train to Otsuki using my rail pass, before buying a ticket on the private Fuji Kyuko line to Kawaguchi-ko. The train ride from Matsumoto to Otsuki was under blue skies. In fact, I am pretty sure I caught a long-distance glimpse of Mt Fuji along the way. The mountain I saw was definitely Fuji-shaped, but in an ominous sign, there was a layer of cloud visible below the summit. Sure enough, as I got closer, the blue skies gave way to cloud. I arrived at Kawaguchi-ko and while ... read more

Tuesday morning started with packing the suitcase again. I really love the luggage transfer service they have here in Japan, because I could leave the suitcase with the hotel reception and travel to my next hotel with just my backpack. The downside is that it is an overnight service, so once again I would arrive at my hotel without most of my stuff. Not a big deal, really. I just made sure I had the crucial stuff in my backpack. Then it was off to catch the trains. It was a decent train trip too. One hour to Okayama (a trip I have done a few times already), just over two hours to Nagoya on the shinkansen, then another two hours from Nagoya to Matsumoto. Plus there was some waiting at the stations in between, so ... read more

Catching an early morning train from Takayama, we arrived in Matsumoto early afternoon. Our experience of Japanese rail thus far has been overwhelmingly positive. Although the rail pass, only available to foreign tourists and must be purchased outside of Japan, initially seems expensive, it is actually great value even if you only makes few long journeys, and it's a great way to travel. The reputation certainly holds true; the trains are comfortable, clean and never, ever late. We have used the Japan Rail offices to reserve seats on the trains, occasionally doing this a few days in advance of travel, but often on the day. The staff have always spoken enough English for this to be done with ease. We were warned that navigating through train stations would be a challenge, but once working out that ... read more
