Happy Valentine's Day! In Japan, the woman gives the man chocolate for Valentine's Day. I tried to secretly buy Darren some chocolate, but it is difficult when he is always around. I got him some chocolate covered almonds and some other chocolates that resemble Mt. Fuji. I tell him that he needs to share. It is the present that gives back. Today we are off to Happo One. We first eat breakfast at our hotel. Yogourt and granola. It is really good and Darren wants to have this for many more breakfasts. We catch the shuttle bus to Happo One. This ski resort is one of the larger ones in Hakuba. In 1998, Hakuba partially hosted the Winter Olympics and the ski jumps are located at this resort. This resort has its claim to fame and ... read more

We both had a terrible sleep with the heater on, it was too hot. Without the heater, it was too cold - even with the giant duvet cover on the beds. We decide to listen to the locals and save Cortina for another day. So, we head to Hakuba 47 and Goryu. Brad said that we can ride both resorts and use one lift ticket. He also recommended that we get the red vests and we can ride in the trees. We don't have much time, so we decide to eat breakfast at the hill. There is a free shuttle bus that picks us up at the hotel beside us. These buses can take us all over Hakuba and do different resorts. The buses look like a giant camper van with wheels very close to the ... read more

Marrying an outdoorsman pretty much guaranteed me spending quite a bit more time outside than I previously had. Luckily, my own passion for hiking had developed fairly quickly after moving here from the American midwest, where I was excited by small hills. The mountains that Japan offers are WAY more exciting and offer a pretty good diversity of courses and seasonal possibilities. The one thing I had never done, however, was hiking in the snow-covered mountains, because I always know I didn't have the right equipment for it. That's where my husband came in! We had a weekend off and I was DYING to go snow-shoeing, but our spot to go (Nikko, where Ma-kun has friends who own a guest house) reported back poor snow conditions that were no good for snow shoes. So we had ... read more

I wake up an hour before the alarm and am wide awake. I still haven't adjusted to Japan time. When Darren gets up we repack our things and head out. We decided last night to not worry about breakfast as most places are closed this early in the morning. We pack all of our luggage onto the train at the Okubo station. We are happy to see that the train isn't packed full. We only have to go one stop to the Shinjuku station. From here we have to find the Shinjuku Express Bus Terminal. We decided to use the bus system since the train doesn't save much time and costs more. We are deceived by the signs to the bus terminal and finally end up above ground and lost. We kind of know where we ... read more

Convincing wild animals to sit in hot springs and pose for photos is not as easy as I'd hoped, despite all I'd seen on the TV. However naked men in outdoor hot springs with hand towels for hats seems to be rather common around Yamanouchi, but not as common as heated toilet seats. It's been an interesting day.... It's getting towards the end of typhoon season which means there's a lot of rain, I'm hoping it's worse here because we're in the mountains and it will get better in Kyoto. I woke a few times in the night to hear the constant downpour, wishing it would ease off but according to my weather app, there's no chance of that. This isn't the type of rain that merely trashes hair. No. It's it's the rain that has ... read more

I've never liked Roy Keane so when he was in the security queue at the airport and he refused to have a selfie with someone all my hatred felt justified. I started my post on facebook with my usual bile despite Roy being in the normal queue rather than the priority lane and then....horror of horrors.....he went back to the guy and said he'd pose for a selfie one they were through security....noooo!!!! Don't ruin my lifelong despisement of you you git!! Ah well, it livened up the longest security queue I've ever been in and at least he didn't have that horrendous beard. Still a git though. And so we were off, flyng with Lufthansa to Munich first and then on to Haneda airport, Tokyo, JAPAN!! I've been wanting to visit Japan for many a ... read more

Glyn's just asked me if I wore the toilet slippers. We're at a Ryokan (old Japanese style inn) in Yagamouchi / Yudanaka and I can't even get going to the toilet right. I saw two pairs of slipper in the toilet doorway and assumed that some lazy sod had left them lying about. Japan is the only country where I've read about the customs before arriving and when I got there, found it it was all true. Fortunately the Japanese are too polite to be angry, but we have been corrected, more than once. And we've been here about half a day. We started by flying to from Manchester to Munich to Tokyo. Towards the end of the 11 hour flight from Munich, I finally got to see Japan through the clouds: a view of dark ... read more

Geo: 36.7425, 138.417We woke up the next morning barely in time for breakfast. It was more kaseki madness, and it came with delicious legit oyakodon (one our favorite Japanese dishes back home) and sashimi! Plus a billion other things.More importantly, we woke up to MAGIC. What's funny is a week ago I was checking the weather, and thought I saw snow on a live webcam of the Shibu area (yup, that's how intently I plan). Then I second guessed myself and thought it was okay, no snow. We misunderstood, through a language barrier, that there was only only one shuttle headed up to the monkey park. Apparently it was 9:10am that it was to leave, and it was already 8:50am. So by the time we threw on the warmest clothes we could find, downed a cup ... read more

Geo: 36.7425, 138.417Even though we were up late last night, I was up again early at 730am to pack my bags as Chris slept. Half of us wanted one last chance to explore Takayama before we left at 11am, particularly the other Morning Market. We had toast and coffee for breakfast at another cafe again. Then we headed down the street to shop. This Market was much bigger and livelier than the one yesterday. It spanned the waterfront of the canal along shops and vendors. I shopped like crazy. Found souvenirs for myself and my fambam back home. I bought myself a t-shirt that says "No Sushi, No Life" and a set of chopsticks with adorable animals on them. :D I had to buy another bag just for souvenirs lol. After shopping for an hour we got ... read more

My mother had visited and walked on the Aputo walk – dismantled railway route, and sent me articles. I translated the articles into English, and Mark and I found were interested in the Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park. As we had planned coming back to Tokyo on 15 October, we decided to go there on 16 October. My mother also decided to go there with us. As with 7th Ocotber when we went to Tohoku, we got up early and headed for the No.4 platform at Shinjuku station. Mark agreed that Shinjuku station is one of the busiest stations in Tokyo. The No.4 platform seemed to be one of the worst: several other lines – Saikyo, Rinkai, and Shonan-Shinjuku lines’ rapid, express and local services use the No.4 platform. We agreed to meet up at the ... read more
