Landed in Kyoto station at about 5.30am, 2.5 hours before check-in (in Japan, you do not just show up and you do not check in early or late, or hang around during the day!). We hung around until the corner cafe opened at 7 and had a lovely breakfast. We checked in to The Tour Club at 8 am (well, dropped our bags off, check in is not until 4 pm). Then we headed off to explore the extensive Imperial Palace gardens. There are 2 ornate little shrines within the grounds, the palace itself and beautiful forested grounds. Following this, we went to Nijo castle which was absolutely excellent. There were beautiful Kano screen paintings and amazing nightingale floors which squeak however lightly you try and walk on them in order to prevent intruding samurai. On ... read more

Kyoto is known for their traditional shrines. I didn’t really think much of Kyoto because temples and shrines got a little tiring after a while. The pictures are more interesting.... read more

I wasn’t even ready for Japan when it came. But I mean really, have I been ready for any of this? For some people Japan was their most anticipated port. Not for me really, I was actually kind of dreading it given the amount of money I was told I would have to spend. None of my preconceived notions turned out to be true, and I should have known that from the start, give what this whole trip has taught me. On the first day immigrations took quite some time so we weren’t allowed to get off the ship until at least noon. I had a trip leaving at 2:30, and I knew I would have to take a train to get anywhere, so I decided to just stay put until then. At 2:30 Lauren and ... read more

Colorful leaves (koyo) are to the Japanese autumn what cherry blossoms are to spring. The viewing of autumn leaves has been a popular activity among the Japanese for centuries and today still draws large numbers of viewers to famous spots. Today, accompanied by Ayako, I went by Keihan Line to the temple of Tofuku-ji, one of the best, if not the best spot, in Kyoto to do some Momiji viewing. If you know me outside of this blog then you probably know that autumn is my favorite season. It's a common occurrence for me to completely stop walking and daze into the beauty of autumn for minutes at a time at random locations. Unfortunately I thought autumn colors had missed Japan, but in actuality the leaves just manage to not change until almost December, very ... read more

Kyoto, whichwore the crown for 10 centuries before, is still the classic Japanese city. The tradiational arts, crafts, customs, language, and literature were all born, raised and refined here. Kyoto has the incomparable gardens, the magnificient temples and shrines. Kyoto has the most artful Japanese cuisine. I have three times visited Kyoto (in Spring 2003 with my parents, in Autumn 2004 with my husband and Autumn 2005 with my sister and father and many times passed it in my trip. It was a beatiful city, the real Japan. ... read more

We are still in Kyoto but leave for China tomorrow. Yesterday I woke up at 8 am and went to a temple with Natalie, Dad and Mom. The temple was very beatiful with stone paths that went through decorated sand fields. Natalie and Dad went into one of the rooms to meditate with a group of people and 2 monks. One monk had a long stick that he would hit people with that wanted to be hit. First you would bow down, and then the monk would bow, and then hit you hard with the back of the stick on both shoulders. When I grow up I would like to hit people with large wooden sticks while they bow down to me. Mom and I sat next to the garden while Dad and Natalie meditated for ... read more

We just finished two weeks of travel through Japan starting from Kyoto. By train we went to Takayama and stayed at a ryokan which is pronounced yo con and is a japanese style hotel. What we did in Takayama is walk around and look at temples. My dad got us lost and we almost missed our bus to Nagano. We ate a lot of things made from rice from street vendors. Reminder, check out the gallery for more photos of Japan. The bus to Nagano was over mountain roads and I slept the whole way. My mom said the road had big drop offs and the bus driver was really good. Then we ran to a train for a 30 minute ride. Nagano is where the Olympics were. When we got off the train there was ... read more

Today I went to Fushimi Inari near Kyoto, it was only about 30 minutes from Hirakata and was really beautiful. Fushimi is famous for the thousands of Orange Torii or gates that line its paths leading up the mountain. The amount of torii is unimaginable, I walked for nearly 2 and a half hours and didnt find the end of the paths or the torii, Also along the trail there are a few areas to stop and take in the view of Kyoto which is prectacular as you eventually climb pretty high on the trail as it winds up the mountain, I highly reccomend that people visit this shrine as it is quite beautiful and its also free which was nice.... read more
