Got lucky and had a three day weekend this past weekend 😊!!! Much better than the past three weeks where I have had only one day weekends because of shift swaps. I hemmed and hawed about whether or not to head out to Kyoto or to just relax around Shizuoka for a few days. Monday morning before I left for work I called up a hostel and asked if they had any room for the next day and they had ... Read Full Entry

Old Japanese street in Gion. The combo of weeping trees and the soft glow of Japanese lanterns at night was amazing! I think the name is Shinmonzen dori.

The famous rock garden. There are 15 rocks placed in a rectangular box of raked sand. I sat for quite a while taking this place in and trying to think for myself what the garden meant to me.

The path of philosophy. I walked it from Ginkaku ji to Eikan ji. Really peaceful walk along a canal lined with coffee shops and big Japanese homes.

Kyoto StationKyoto Station
Kyoto Station

Maybe the most architecturally interesting train station I have seen. I read an interesting sign about the design of the station. I can't remember all of the details, but it talked about how the designers created a matrix type of structure. The idea of the matrix originated I think in the renaissance era it said. The matrix was symbolic of a "womb." The designer's of Kyoto station envisioned it serving as a womb for the people coming to and leaving Kyoto. The called the station a starting point from which the people coming and doing share various life experiences. I thought it was pretty deep for a train station.

I wish I could get a better pic of this station. Lots of steel and twists and turns. This is from the bottom of a 12 story high stair case.
