Japan is FANTASTIC. If you haven't already heard, Shanghai wasn't really my cup of tea. Not to put anyone off their travels there but it's a polluted, stinky (really, there was a 'melting plastic' aroma almost everywhere I went) people spit in the street, people try to scam you (Idiot number 1 over here, scammed for AU$155) I was even latched onto and chased by one beggar, one minute you're talking to someone about your drawings and the next they're getting a bottle smashed over their head??!!. Yep, Shanghai was one big stinky, smoggy, crappy, overpopulated chinese city. So I was pretty happy when I boarded and sailed off on the ferry to Osaka, Japan. Woohoo! I did however have some very hilarious and memorable experiences there, for example when I arrived at Shanghai station from the ... read more

This city is amazing, a size able one but not on the scale of the massive Tokyo. It has so many temples I cannot see them all. It is easy to get around and im staying at a very cool hostel on the river and have met some good travelers. I just cannot stress how good some of my days have been, walking round the temples has been very pleasant indeed, getting old is good if it allows me to enjoy this sort of thing ? Last night was in this Brazilian bar with this French guy called alex who is n my room, none of the others came out from the hostel, he was speaking Portuguese with the bar tender and I understood maybe 70 percent wow !... read more

We departed Osaka on Sunday 23rd Sep and caught the Express train to Kyoto. The train service here is superb and really cheap - it cost 400 yen (about £1.70) each for a journey which took over an hour. This way of travelling gives a great view into how people live in Japan as you pass through towns and villages and what the countryside housing is like etc. The carriages were really busy as it was (another) public holiday and being the gentleman that I am, I gave up my seat so an elderly Japanese couple could sit down (if I’m honest, this was only part of the reason as I wanted to keep my eye on our cases behind us as well). They were extremely grateful and several bows were exchanged; as we neared ... read more

Stayed at Kyoto for 4 nights, in a traditional Japanese style tatami room. This means a shared bathroom, toilet, futon beds, communal dinning area and a lovely room with sliding doors. Quite in the Japanese spirt of things. Some evenings spent having quiet Japanese meals, others ended in loud karaoke nights! The city is a mix of the peaceful traditional streets of Goin and the hip and happening street life of neon lights and city goers!... read more

Desværre (og ... read more

Well, måske mest Kim! Efter aftensmaden trylles bordet ... read more

Day One- Arrival So I woke up and we hung around for a while. And then at around ten we went to the station. With a heavy backpack full of clothes etc, we got on a couple of trains, taking about two hours to get to Kyoto. From the train stop we got on a bus. I was suprised to see quite a few foreigners on the train. Kie explained to me that a lot of foreign people come to Kyoto. It was really weird. Until now, I had been the only non japanese p... read more

Day 9 - we left Takayama early and caught the train for Kyoto, (where we got off at the wrong stop and jumped back on in the nick of time). The transport here is excellent though (if you pay attention!), the trains are spacious and always on time (to the nearest session). All of the stations show the name in English and label exits as to which sights you can get to from each. This hasn't stopped us getting a bit confused at times as some of the stations are HUGE but on the whole Japan has been a very easy country to travel around. The rail passes we bought before coming here have been great value and are really easy to use. When we arrived at our hostel in Kyoto we met up again ... read more

Hi all Moved on to Kyoto Went around Imperial Palace today on pre-arranged tour Lovely grounds and blossom at last getting to be its best but a week later would be better Seen Golden Pavillion and Zen gardens at Ryoanji temple 15 rocks arranged within a gravel raked setting Very peaceful Took a walk from the hotel to Yasaka shrine opposite The gate is being restored but inside there are a number of temples and shrines On the way up the paths to the shrines are lots of stalls selling food trinkets and games of chance - a bit like Blackpool golden mile Saw a Shinto wedding in the shrine. Very much an open air public ceremony and very noisy from all the crowds around Walked on from there and came to some lovely unexpected paved ... read more
