Three meals in one day plus snacks in Kamakura. It's like a holiday! When somewhere we're staying includes breakfast I get a tad excited. Knowing I may not be able to eat again until tea time exacerbates the excitement so imagine how much I was looking forward to my first free breakfast in Japan. So when there were dry bread rolls and a few pastries that I don't particularly like and give me heartburn anyway.... There was hot coffee and some strange tasting juice but with no butter or jam etc everything was very dry and quite unappealing despite the lovely smell. There were no westerners there other than us but people of other descent were wolfing it down like there was no tomorrow. I suspect some were foreign workers who may not be able to ... read more

We had decided to head to Kamakura for the day, as it is an easy and interesting day trip from Tokyo. We left around 8:30 and took the subway to Shinjuku station. Here we were able to buy transport passes that would allow us to take the train to and from Fujisawa, which is connected by tram to Kamakura. The Enoshima/Kamakura Freepass costs only 1,470 yen, a bargain! The transport pass also included unlimited tram journeys. We took one of the faster trains to Fujisawa, it looked like a regular subway train to me, and the journey took about an hour. We then passed through the station and connected to the Enoden line. We rode the tram for nine stops until we reached Shichirigahama. We left the station and walked for 5 minutes to reach Bills. ... read more

Sunday morning in Tokyo and I had to decide what to do for the day. I had choices, but my dilemma was due to the fact that it was a Sunday. Whatever I decided, based on my experience of the last few weeks, it was going to be busy. It seems that Sunday is the day that the Japanese get out and spend time with friends and family and see their wonderful country. In the end, I decided to go to Kamakura. Mostly I based this on Lonely Planet mentioning that Kamakura is usually less crowded than Nikko. If that was the case on Sunday, then Nikko must have been absolutely chockers because it seemed like every man and his dog was at Kamakura. Kamakura, by the way, was at one time the centre of Japanese ... read more

Oli hienonhieno päivä! Hieno! Noutoaamupalanyssykkä kourassa kävi kuitenkin ohraisesti, kun saapuvassa junassa lukikin jotain ihan muuta (T... read more

Jocelyn is visiting from the states right now, and while she is here, we're trying to do fun stuff and see lots of things I don't normally get around to. Even though it's winter, and it's not very picturesque, we decided to go to Kamakura on one of my "weekend" days to wander around and see the multitude of shrines and temples there. It didn't take too long to get there from my neck of the woods - about 60 minutes, give or take with trains and connections. It was cool, but not cold, and though we had our coats on, we were quite comfortable walking around. It wasn't busy, either, which I guess is a benefit of going during the off-season. We made it in good time, by 11 AM, and decided that our first ... read more

Took trains for a 1 hour 30 mins journey to the southern tip of Tokyo bay to visit the temple and shrines at Kamakura. Not too many tourist about so great photo opportunities. The giant Buddha was previously housed in a build which was destroyed in a tsunami during the early 20th century. The Buddha being bronze survived and was later moved further up the hill to it's present location. Took the slower train back via the coast. Very scenic.... read more

Viime viikon aikana ollaan pyoritty lahinna Japanin Alpeilla. Lahdimme Kanazawasta Toyaman kautta Tateyama-Kurobe alppireitille. Reitin aikana mennaan eri vempaimilla (juna, bussi, johdinauto, koysirata, omat jalat) ylos Tateyaman vuorelle, sielta alas aina Kuroben padolle asti. Reitin voi menna painvastaiseenkin suuntaan halutessaan. Tateyaman vuori on mm. kuuluisan whisky-linnun (Famous Snow Grouse) kotipaikka. Oli huikeat maisemat. Vuoren huippu oli edelleen lumen peitossa, joten bussireitti taytyy aina raivata lumen keskelta. Murodosta pystyi halutessaan aloittamaan usean paivan vaelluksen Kamikochin saakka. Osa vaellusreiteista oli kiinni, koska vuoresta purkautui liikaa rikkikaasuja. Kavimme vahan kurkkaamassa... read more

Once upon a time on a train to Kamakura, a woman sitting next to me began to strike up a conversation in English. She was middle-aged and timid, but comely. She began to ask me why I was here and told me that she thought the English language was very beautiful, but very hard. I have never heard anyone describe the English language as beautiful, but I agreed it must be difficult to learn. She continued to list all the American musicians and actors that she likes, the few that I could decipher (the letter 'L' is hard to pronounce for Japanese people) included Clint Eastwood, Micheal Jackson, and Kevin Costner. She followed with the statement, "Micheal Jackson dead." I nodded, yes, very dead. When we arrived at Kamakura she insisted on showing me where to ... read more
