Our School Embarks to Kamakura! With Yugawara to follow.... NOTICE: I lost my pictures for this one as well, but I was able to get the pictures from my Teacher's camera at least. During the last few weekends, my culture class went on a trip to Kamakura. This place had quite the amount of pretty tourist attractions to gander at. I feel its best left to photographs to explain my experience when its this kind of thing. Ill just share anything else worth mentioning. It was an optional trip if u weren't taking the class for credit so only 4 of us went. It was a Saturday morning. We took the train for only an hour before we arrived at Kamakura. We crossed a long bridge on foot that led out to an island. The island was extremely ... read more

Predictably woke at a jet lag fuelled 540 feeling ready for the day. Decided not to try and convince my body to sleep any more but rather make the most of it so washed and headed out. Took the train to Tokyo station left the bags and headed to Kamakura arriving in the town just before 700. Very attractive little town with all sorts of shrines dotted in the hills around the coast. Took in the first shrine and decided to head out on a signed forest walk for a couple of hours. Very beautiful hike through some beatifully quiet forests with nothing but the sounds of birds in the air. Quite surreal as everytime you peaked over the hill you realised how close you remained to civilisation but the trail managed the pretence of wilderness ... read more

... read more

First breakfast at Kimie's. We had japanese weenies (really good) on a bed of lettuce, tempura shrimp, rice, miso, and chocolate filled bread buns. I swear we eat so much all the time but in reality though everything is in small portions. We walked to the train station (I think it was the Odakyu) and took a train to the Fujisawa Station. It is a lot easier getting places from Kimie's than GGmas. We met up with our oldest GUncle at the station. Then we all got on a bus to go to Kamakura. It was about a half an hour ride. The first place we went to was the Hase-Dera Temple. It sure was a hike uphill from the street. Neat passing by dozens of trinket stores on both sides of the streets. The story ... read more

Kamakura is about an hour southeast of Tokyo and is a quiet little city withstanding the hoards of pligrims that invade it to see the many temples that it holds. Dave and I were among them and found it spritually refreshing. The first one we visited was the biggest and most popular, Hachiman gu Tsurugaoka, built by Minamoto Yoritomo, the first Shogun in Kamakura in 1180s. It's got so much to see it really took our breath away. Kind of like Notre Dame, but with really scary statues of deities from Buddhism, and a lot of incense. We then head off down the road to Kencho-Ji, a very old and smaller complex that was just peaceful and light. Next, lunch break as one cannot pligrim on an empty stomache. Darn, the noodles were really good and ... read more

Yesterday was one of the most exhausting, exciting days I have experienced since arriving in Japan, and that is saying a lot, because nearly every day is full to the brim with new experiences, and I always end the day absolutely exhausted. Anyway, yesterday was the Kamakura day tour. We all went as a class, and some of us were lucky enough to be able to bring our host families with us, if they wanted to come and weren't too busy. I was fortunate enough that my host mother was able to come on the Kamakura tour. The day started out really early, with everyone meeting in Tokyo station at 8:45, and then heading off to Kamakura as a group. I'll try to be brief, but its hard, as there is so much I want to ... read more
