Well, time to leave Kyoto and after our grateful thanks were offered to our fantastic hosts at the ryokan, we headed for the station for the hour long trip to Nagoya. Nagoya was totally flattened in the Second World War and has become a smaller, more relaxed version of Tokyo. We decided, after finally finding our hotel, to visit Nagoya Port, not knowing what to expect. When we got there it was bustling family area, with a huge aquarium centre at its heart. We visited the centre and found that it included a dolphinarium and performances from both the dolphins and a killer whale. At this point both our consciouses kicked in about exactly how we felt about the performances and the ethics of it all. However, we decided that firstly a killer whale wouldn't ... read more

I’ve been part of the Aeon team for about a month now, and I’ve already had a 10 day paid holiday. “Golden Week”, oh how I love you. Japan has an unbelievable amount of public holidays, a lot more than Australia that’s for sure. And 4 of those public holidays happen to fall around the first week of May, therefore most companies give their employees the days off in between too, and Aeon is one of those wonderful companies. So I’ve just had since the 29th April off work, but I have to go back tomorrow. I’ll give you more info of my Golden Week further down. So to update after my last entry, I have finished all my training and have had a week and a half of actual work in my school in ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Japan/nagoya/blog-152837.html のキャッシュです。 Traditional Japanese food is quite healthy, sashimi, and sushi which is raw fish with rice and soy sauce or wasabi (green paste - hot chilli-like flavour). The other type of Japanese food is always fried food, quick to cook and cheap and not necessarily healthy. The latter is the type of food provided by the university cafeteria. Fried pork, yakitori, sukiyaki, tempura udon noodles and rice. I went to a sushi restuarant with my new Japanese friends, Hiro and Aki, they took me to a place in Nishi, a local sushi bar, very good, cheap and healthy. 500yen each. I ate sashimi which was delicious, aji and katsudo it was called, I had Nagoya sushi roll which is fried pork pieces wrapped in rice and seaweed paper (sushi). I ate udon noodles, steamed ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Japan/nagoya/Sakae/blog-152829.html のキャッシュです。 Nagoya is a castle city and the 4th biggest after Tokyo, Yokohamma and Osaka. It is the centre of Japan. My university is about 30mins by train. It is a big city, 2.2 millipn people almost. Doesnt seem to look overcrowded compared to Sydney, but definetly compared to Pocatky. There are so many shops, big departments stores, resturants , bars and pachinko outlets. Pachinko is a gambling house, mostly frequented by Japanese men, they play the machines for hours winning, loosing, smoking cigarette after cigarette. Its very colourful and noisy inside. They gather sivler balls which are money tokens to play with. I didnt play it, wouldnt know how to be honest, I think I prefer the good old pokies at the Newtown RSL. There are vending machines everywhere here, everywhere and anywhere, ... read more

One week back in Japan and it has flown by. It's wierd to think that going back home was actually only a holiday, as Japan is my home at the moment. But as I said it was great to be back if only for a little while. I've been so unbelievably busy in the last week, it feels like I've been here for ages. I arrived back in Japan on Sunday night, and what with the time it took me to clear customs, get my luggage and catch the bullet train to Nagoya, I didn't get into the hotel until 11.30pm. I was exhausted. And Aeon had left a nice little package for me at the front desk: a training manual of which they wanted me to read the first couple of sections before training ... read more

I heard its possible to purchase Czech Pilsen here? Havent found it yet, they sell ASAHI, Japanese beer of course, the guys here, 4 Americans and 1 Aussie, tell me its quite weak, but I wouldnt know not being a beer drinker. I did try some Japanese whiskey with a couple of French students, SUNTORY Japanese whiskey, 40%, not too bad. But I ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Japan/nagoya/blog-145341.html のキャッシュです。 Cherry Blossom season is the prettiest time of trees bloom beautiful pink or white flowers. Japanese call it Sakura and they go to view the Sakura whilst having picnics, BBQ and parties with friends, families and colleagues. Its a very happy and joyful time, the beginning of Spring. But the weather has been cold here, 15 degrees, the winds are strong and so the chills are even colder. Rug up and sip on hot sake! Here in Tsuramai, the Sakura is blooming and the festival has begun, this is a popular park to view Sakura. It all started with a mail from an old colleague coming to know that I was working in Nagoya, he asked how Nagoya Castle was?And the fact that in spite of staying for 2 1/2 years in Nagoya I still haven't visited Nagoya castle hit me. Though I have visited many places in and around Nagoya, been to Kyoto a million times and have been to much farther and less accessible places, but I have not really got around to Nagoya Castle. There are reasons though. First of all Nagoya castle is hardly 40 years old!!! Its true, the original castle(500 years old) was destroyed in the final stages of the 2nd World War. The fact that most castles are built out of wood didn't help much and all that is left is the stone ... read more

Getting back to the grind here in Japan has been a comfortable transition since the holidays. When work is pretty simple and responsibilities for me are at an all time low, daily and weekly routines are pretty easy to re-adjust to. Mornings are relaxing again... pottery and Japanese classes, e-mailing, watching TV, reading. Pretty chilled out. Weekends have been steadily booked, but also relaxing. I've been to a birthday and bachelorette party, a wedding, a New Year's party, a professional drum group concert, and a naked man festival. Keiko, a friend who's been managing the Nishio school, was married to her husband Hiroyuki on January 21st. A gorgeous bride she was. Weddings in Japan are quite lavish, even moreso in the Nagoya area, so it was interesting to witness some of the planning processes and get ... read more
