Ahhh, Krakatau . How I love thee. Famous for its blast some hundred years ago, its charm surely has tantalized many to come and visit thee. It was said that Krakatau ashes reached Europe and changed the course of history. I am not sure if it’s a little bit exaggerating, but when I was being told that a friend of a friend is planning to go there, I immediately said “can I join?” Days before the trip, the child of Krakatau started to show signs of eruption. With Merapi’s explosion just days before - it doesn’t sound like a good idea to visit at such time. (Day 394 on the road) Wow - my trip to Krakatau was absolutely and utterly fascinating! Of all the volcanoes in the world, Krakatau is possibly the most famous one. Its last major eruption in 1883 was one of the greatest natural disasters in the world and quite possibly the loudest ever recorded sound on earth. Back in 1883 the eruption killed 36.000 people - if the volcano was to erupt again today, scientists expect the death toll to be over 1 million people. The sound of the 1883 eruption could be heard 3.500 km away in Perth, Australia, and the shock wave went around the globe seven times in total. Something is flying up in the sky: Bird-shaped Kite. Not far from it, a plane-shaped kite float stable. It is not usual evening. This evening, the sky above Taman Hutan Kota is decorated with bright color and creatively shaped kite, flown by those who participate in Lampung Kite Festival 2008. Lampung Kite Festival is part or Krakatau Festival, the annual event organized by the provincial government of Lampung. Organized by Lampung Kite Community, the festival invited all those who have passion towards kite to compete in creating not only the most beautiful & nice looking kite, but also has the stability when flown. I stare in disbelieve as the giant dark thing blows dust to the air above. Still disbelieve that we are only few hundred meters from the giant that rock the world more than a century ago: Krakatau Volcano. We were aboard KMP Windu Karsa Pratama, a big ferry chartered by the local authority for trip to Krakatau Volcano, as part of annual Krakatau Festival 2008. On board are ambassadors from 21 countries, government officials, media and those who are curious enough with the volcano. The original itinerary is to land on the island for a ceremony, but due to the activity of the volcano, the ceremony is done onboard. I grab my camera as the volcano again blows dust to the air.
