So here is another of the two hundred reasons why we keep returning to Asia. I have elaborated many other reasons that I will soon be posting on my next travel blog. But here is a little story I would like to share. In February, when we were in the airport in Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia, looking for a cup of Espresso, we came across a coffee shop that had a guitar, but alas, no espresso machine. One of the staff escorted me to another shop where we bought our espresso. (Where does that happen?) I promised to return to their shop later and sing a song with them. When I did, the entire staff was waiting, stood up and cheered, and then brought out the guitar and we shared songs. Today, two months later, once again ... read more

A few short years ago, if someone had told me I'd be dropping into a black ocean armed with only a flashlight for illumination, I'd have said "Not likely"! But then again, that is pretty much what I said only days before jumping off a cliff to go paragliding in the Himalayas three years ago. My proclamations are obviously not trustworthy, as I definitely jumped off those cliffs in Nepal - not once, but twice - and I completed two night dives earlier this week on our second trip to the Bunaken Marine Park in Northern Sulawesi this year. I am not sure what I was expecting - I think I was hoping mostly not to be too terrified - but I know that I was not expecting the world of spectacular colour that I discovered. ... read more

As I reported in my last post, getting to this remote destination on the planet was not easy, and I suppose if it were, the atmosphere might not be the same. We enjoyed the quiet, the calmness, and the island mentality still predominant even though there are a few dive resorts on the island. Really there is nothing else to do here. People come here to dive. Period. But what a stunning experience it is to dive the Bunaken Marine Park - and we barely scratched the surface, as there are about fifty dive sights spread around three islands, and we only dived nine of them. We have dived several locations in Indonesia, including the outstanding Komodo Marine Park near Flores where we swam last year with the oceanic giant manta rays, but never before have ... read more

INDONESIA - MY CUP RUNNETH OVER There is nothing quite like going on a dive trip and staying for a week or two. I usually plan at least two days of diving when I go to a new country, and as you can see…sometimes I do many more. This is my second trip to Lembeh Straits in Sulawesi, Philippines. It is a marvelous place. I like dive resorts, and dive live-aboards, where the emphasis is on diving. But I also like smaller dive shops so my hotels or hostels are in local neighborhoods and I get to see more of the culture and the people of the country. This trip, which started on December 5th and ended on February 9th was a good mix of diving and travel. I started by joining a friend from my ... read more

Our mission was to get from Ko Tao, a small island in southern Thailand, to Bunaken Island, a tiny remote island off the Northeast coast of Sulawesi, in Northern Indonesia. We had already invested one day of travel getting from the island of Ko Tao to Chumphon, on the mainland, and knew that the last leg of travel would involve a short boat transfer from Sulawesi to Bunaken island. We weighed out the pros and cons of getting the largest segment of the journey - which involved connecting with an international flight and going through both exit and entry customs - completed with one gruelling day of travel, and decided to do the full meal deal and get it all done in one long day. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and we ... read more

INDONESIA – CORNUCOPIA OF THE SEA I woke up to sunny weather and waited till after the dive boat left the dock at 7:30 a.m. before leaving my comfortable bed and searching out food and friends at NAD dive resort. I fought the temptation to grab my camera and run out and join the other divers doing the morning dives, but the first day of diving, although thrilling, had left me almost sick with exhaustion and a fierce headache. I decided to take the morning off, on day two, to rest and recuperate. Traveling from Santiago, Chile to Lembeh Straits in Indonesia had been a two day endurance test of flights and lay-overs. I went to breakfast. There were a few other guests who were relaxing, rather than diving. I ordered eggs and toast and ate ... read more

LEMBEH This was a funny trip. My flight to Indonesia from Santiago, Chile was routed through Seattle. I had a fourteen hour layover, not time enough to drive all the way home, then back to the airport. I asked my daughter, Lauren to come visit with me and to bring me a pair of pedal pushers; I lost my brand new ones in Costa Rica on our river run. I could catch up with what was happening at home, and since I would only be diving on this part of my trip I could send some stuff home and travel lighter. Lauren and Mike met me in the airport but when I went to the luggage carousel my luggage wasn’t there. I checked with the airline and it was locked up in a room waiting to ... read more

Wow. This Christmas will go down in the memory banks as one of the most surreal holidays in my life. I had made it to Pulau Bunaken with expectations and visions of warm weather, clear waters, marine life to spare, and massive coral reef walls - of which I would dive during my stay at the far northern tip of Sulawesi to close out my two months in Indonesia. Normally I try not to have expectations of any place as expectations tend to always lead to disappointment due to the fact that nothing is ever as it is in your mind. Here on Bunaken everything and more I expected came to be after I stumbled into a sweet little dive resort ran by a friendly Italian by the name of Roberto. Raja Laut was to be ... read more

Getting to and from the Togean Islands in Indonesia requires a serious amount of effort and a serious amount of time. The reward at the end of the journey are stunning and isolated tropical islands surrounded by massive coral reefs amid crystal clear turquoise waters and golden sun kissed beaches. This place is awesome. From Toraja I took a 16 hour bus ride from hell complete with farm animals on my lap and all manner of crops under my feet to the lakeside town of Tentena for a day of recovery amid some nice scenery and some fresh water swimming. From Tentena it was another 8 hours to the port town of Ampana in North Sulawesi. From here it was a three hour ferry ride to The Togeans. I had arrived at Poya Lisa Island and ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sulawesi » Tana Toraja December 14th 2016

Getting to Sulawesi involved a lot of time and patience. It involved a twenty hour journey across the Sulawesi Sea on an overcrowded Pelni ship where I had to sleep on the floor and fight 3,000 Indonesians and god knows how many cockroaches for any space to stretch my 6' frame. Once I arrived in Makassar I had a quick overnight sleep and then booked a night bus for a ten hour journey to Tana Toraja, my first destination in Sulawesi. I arrived in the outpost town Rantepao as the sun was coming up and found a place to stay via a friendly guide; of whom I decided to hire his services for a couple of days. I've been to a lot of countries, experienced a lot of cultures, and seen a lot of things in ... read more
