Java, Java, Java...The name alone never fails to conjure dozens of images in my head. Images of rumbling volcanoes, tumbling rice paddies, crumbling temples. Images of coffee plantations shrouded in mist. Of graceful dancers, shadow-puppets and mythological epics. It conjures the sound of the gamelan wafting through the Sultan's palace. Modern Java offers all of these things, of course. But that is only half the story. This long, thin island, only two-thirds of the size of Great Britain with over twice its population, is at the heart of 21st-century Indonesia, its seat of government and economic powerhouse. An island of polluted metropolises, traffic-clogged highways, impoverished shantytowns and filthy waterways, of churning factories and neon-lit shopping centres. Mobile phone ringtones and modern pop compete with the centuries-old gamelan here. Home to some 125,000,000 people... read more

Borobudur, Indonesia (JavaScript in Stone) Don’t be scared, my friends. Though languages like Javascript, SQL, PERL are my bread and butter, I am not going to serve the same fare to you. I mean, why you should be tortured by statements like these? While (In Java, Indonesia) {See Borobudur ; See Prambanan; } If (Time permits) {See Ramayana Ballet; } Else {Take the flight to Bali; } End if; End; So, rest assured. I will try to tell you about Borobudur in dear old plain English language, hoping that she i.e. the English language, cooperates. The way she floors me, which is often, I suspect that I may not be dear to her. Maybe, it is my fault. I should not have called her ‘old’ and ‘plain’. Borobudur, on the Indonesian island of Java, is ... read more

Sometime before the 5th century AD, the influence of Hinduism and Buddhism spread southward from the mainland of Southeast Asia to the islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali and a few others in the archipelago currently called Indonesia. There are no archaeological remains of temples in the Indianized states of Java prior to the end of the seventh century as the early Hindu structures were built of wood and have long since decayed in the moist tropic climate. The greatest concentration of Javanese sacred architecture lies on the plain around the present city of Yogyakarta, here stands the beautiful Hindu temple complex of Prambanam and the world famous Hindu/Buddhist temple of Borobudur. Borobudur, a name deriving from an expression meaning 'Mountain of accumulation of merits of the ten states of Bodhisattva' is commonly thought of as a ... read more

Fumaroles, Buddhist temples, volcanoes and an abandoned temple The last thing I wrote about in the previous blog entry was my visit to Krakatoa Island in Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. After that I went back to Java again and slowly made my way towards Bali. Kawah Domas On the western end of Java is a city named Bandung. North of Bandung there is a volcanic area called Kawah Domas. There used to be several large geysers and boiling pools there. Geysers and pools need water. At some time underground water took a different route and the area became arid. When there is not enough water to sustain geysers they turn into fumaroles. That's what there is to find in this area - fumaroles. The area is huge and there are hundreds of fumaroles there. ... read more
