Even though I was the first to arrive at the ticket counter at Borobudur Temple at 6am, the sun rise has long passed. Crap! There goes the highlight of my trip :( I thought to myself. After all, the best time to photograph Borobudur Temple is either at sun rise or sunset. And I didn't have the luxury to stay until sunset! Haha... Stupas at BorobudurTemple Buddha Statue at Borobudur Temple Not wanting to be just looking at 'stones', I hired a guide for 50,000(RM19). It was alright, only problem was, I couldn't juggle between history lesson and taking artsy photographs. By the time I finish the temple tour (about 2 hours), I was exhausted and the sun was too bright and unforgiving to indulge in any form of photography. sigh! So, that was it?! The ... read more

23 July 07 At Borobudur We woke up at 4am today as the shutter van from Manohara hotel would come to pick us up at 4:30am to catch the sun rise. The sun rise at Borobudur is claimed as one of the best in the world. Manohara is the only one hotel in Borobudur which could take you for the sun rise. If you intend to catch the sun rise, it is advised that you stay in this hotel. It was dark when we arrived at the Borobudur, with the torch light we straight climbed up to the highest level and waited for the sun rise. We have to admit that we always have no luck when catching the sun rise or sun set. After disappointed in Angkor Wat, we were disappointed again in Borobudur. The ... read more

22 July 07 Shopping Morning, we walked along the Malioboro street. The prices of the goods were so attractive, though we still have a long way to go in the journey, but we still want to buy it as afraid it couldn’t be get in other places. From Malioboro we walked to Market Beringharjo. Variety of foods, fruits, clothes etc were found along the road. Just next to the market, there is a small alley, which along the alley many antics and old utensils were sold. To know a living of local people, market is the best place to explore. Market Beringharjo is one of the best place to walk and look around. Near to the market, there is a small shopping complex, called Beringharjo center. The complex is just like our central market, downstairs got ... read more

Woke up with the call to prayer at 4.30am which was ok because my tour was off at 5am, the minivan turned up I crawled in and went to sleep. We arrived at Borobudor at about 6.30 as the sun began to rise, and were promptly jumped on by touts, they are really bad, its difficult not to be rude to them. I was in a good mood I was about to behold a wonder and I was not disappointed in the least, it was a truly amazing site. As you can see from the pictures the temple has thousands of intricate carvings, I couldn’t believe it. It took decades to build around the 8th century, and decorate yet the people who built it just packed up and left a century or two after completion it ... read more

Aaarrrhhh, just logged on and found out that the last couple of logs that I published have been lost!! Technical prob or something and they don’t think I’ll get them back, pants!! Anyway………. Pangandaran On leaving Jakarta I headed to the west coast of Java to Pangandaran. The bus journey had been quite comfortable (I pad extra to go on an air conditioned bus), though I was a bit concerned as the bus driver moved my bag to another compartment on the coach which was used for the smokers, which had another exit of the bus that I couldn’t see from my seat (putting the bag under the bus in the language compartment was also meant to be a big risk on these bus routes!). This meant the at any stop any of the local smokers ... read more

Borobudur is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is just outside Jogjakarta, which is also known as Jogja and Java. Went there with Jessica, her cousin and his little boy and his brother in law. Confusing isnt it. At most tourist sites in Indonesia, foreingers pay 10times more than domestic tourists. You have to go to a different ticket point and entrance point. My ticket cost $US 10 AND Jessica's cost only $US 1. I thought it was shocking and after going all that way, your not going to excatly say no are you. Anyway, walked though my private entrance and headed up though a small park surrounding the temple. It is spectaular looking from a distance and with most places in Asia, full of people. Climbed up the first flight ... read more

A white mist shrouds the plain and the first birdcalls across the valleys announce the imminent arrival of another dawn. Slowly the mist dissipates in the rising sun to reveal the spires and Buddhas that meditate in bliss and gradually the forms coalesce to unveil a temple that many who have seen it, consider to be the finest example of Buddhist architecture ever raised to the sky by man - the magnificent temple of Borobudur. Few sights on this planet can compare to the misty sunrise over Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, one of the three wonders of Southeast Asia - along with Myanmar's Bagan and Cambodia's Angkor Wat. - Yogyakarta - Kumiko and I left the Tengger Caldera Plateau and returned to Probolinggo (the city of mangos), where we decided to split as Kumiko ... read more

It's a shame that this is my 11th week in Indonesia and I have not been anywhere outside of Jakarta other than home - hence last Thursday, I decided to pluck myself out and bought a ticket to Yogyakarta. I have always wanted to see Borobudor and Prambanan, hopefully I will have time for a quick trail up Mt. Merapi. The plan was to leave on Friday night after work and be back at my desk by Monday morning. Contrary to popular belief that domestic travel is a mess in Indonesia, this is the place for cheap domestic flights. With at least 12 airlines (excluding Garuda, the national carrier) providing air services throughout Indonesia, hunting for cheap air tickets is a matter of skill as opposed to a matter of luck. This skill can be acquired ... read more

Java's Two Major temples There was a unsubtle knock on the door at 5am by the bloke we hired to take us to Borobudur (the largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia), and Prambanan (the largest Hindu complex in Java)... Twenty minutes later we were racing trough the streets of Yogya narrowly missing motorcyclists (sometimes four people on one moped!), stalls, animals, etc.. Towering on our right was Gunung Merapi, a MASSIVE, and very active volcano. Few of South East Asia's volcanoes are as evocative, or as destructive as Gunung Merapi - which has been erupting continually for decades. the last eruption was in July this year..ekk! At 2911m, this monster volcano looms over the surrounding plains, Yogyakarta, Borobudur & Prambanan. It makes for a great picture too! Borobudur Like Angkor Wot in Cambodia, Java's Borobudur makes the ... read more
