One thing about travel is that it forces you to look through a different lens from time to time. I was sitting in one of the pool cabanas and complaining about the fact that my green juice was more froth than juice when I started to think of the orphanage that we are going to visit later in the week. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind the froth! But that was late in the day. Let's look at how we got to that point in time. Resort life is as little strange really. Every blog entry could simply read. Wake. Swim. Breakfast. Swim. Lunch. Swim. Dinner. Swim. Bed. Then rinse and repeat for the duration of the stay. It's great if you like sitting by a pool and sunbathing - but that's not really my thing. ... read more

Today was one of those lazy days that you have on holidays. Everyone is basically well but probably fair to say we're tired from the heat and from being sick earlier in the trip. We all had a decent buffet breakfast this morning and then took it in turns to either do an exercise class and a swim (Pamela and Emily) or a relax and a swim (Brett and Tom). Because of their time outside in the exercise class the girls are now quite pink from the sun despite taking precautions. Hopefully this settles overnight. We had lunch basically on the beach but the humidity is making it uncomfortable to even sit down unless there is a breeze blowing. Another swim after lunch and we then went for a walk to a nearby shopping centre to ... read more

The Tiger Air flight made a smooth touchdown at the Denpasar airport in the fading twilight. There was a downpour just before we landed. From my window seat I could see the water splash from the touchdown. The plane taxied slowly to the terminal. I curiously looked at the cottage shaped terminal. Bali! This is where I start my journey. I was excited. I have a bucketful of activities scheduled in Bali that I meticulously planned for the last six months with Desi Yanti, my travel planner from Adventure Indonesia. True, I was going to have some fun time in Bali like paragliding and various water sports, but that is only to satisfy my adrenaline rush. The part of Bali that has attracted me is the rich Balinese culture with its old history of Hinduism that ... read more

Geo: -8.79958, 115.229You start with an hour to Heathrow, courtesy of that honourable chap Stephen Whaley, then having dropped your bags you hang about for a couple of hours, then you hang about at 37,000 feet for a little over 12 hours vainly trying to get much sleep. Then you spend an hour clearing Singapore Immigration, collecting bags, checking in for JetStar flight to Bali, going out through immigration again. Then you hang about eating rubbish muffins for another 2 hours (not eating muffins the whole time!) then another 2 and a half hours at 32,000 feet then about an hour and a half getting the Indonesian visa, clearing immigration and customs and being driven to the hotel by the nice man sent by the hotel, So you finally arrive about 10:45 pm (local time) the ... read more

Another day another tour, but no complaints here! Spent another boiling hot yet wonderful day touring all around the East Coast of Bali, all the way from Nusa Dua up past Benoa, Denpasar, Sanur, Kamasan, Klungkung, Goa Lawah, Candidasa,Tengagnen and all the way back! Day started off with the usual wake up, rushed breakfast then a brief wait in the lobby for our driver, Mr Mang Su (from mybali.com.au), to arrive with our van. Following a quick briefing on the day's activities we set off to firstly find a Commonwealth Bank ATM in Kuta to get some money out (which only gave you about $300 per transaction) and then off to find a phone/internet card to use up in the mountains. Fortunately for mum, her phone now works a treat and has 3G intenet in most ... read more

Good Morning !!! It is November 8th @ approximately 6:30AM here is Bali, the sun is shinning, the birds are singing and I can hear the sound of the surf. Yes, and Marika is up and about, making coffee. Our plan is to take a walk on the beach before breakfast. Today will be a relaxing day with an afternoon tour to Tabanan. My net book says that it is November 7th back home at 2:55PM, which means that those in BC are still at work. Our journey from Vancouver was very long, however we arrived well rested and most didn't turn in until around 10PM. I don't think it will take us long to adjust to the time difference. I will attempt to keep you updated on a daily basis. Cheers!... read more

So I have issues with the behaviour of Australian tourists in Bali, as evident from my last retroblog. A few months later I found myself again in Bali transitting through to Sumatra with Mum. Before we left I agreed to her wishes to see Bali again after 20 years since her last visit on the condition that we did not stay in Kuta. I would rather be shot by a firing squad of dwarves so I get kneecapped over and over again and eventually bleed to a horribly painful death than stay in Kuta. So we stayed the first night before our flights to Jakarta and Padang at Nusa Dua. A compromise. And I had to go to the Bali Safari Park because mum wanted to cuddle a baby orangutan and have her photo taken - ... read more

Today was a rather relaxing day. In the morning we had a swim and a laze around the pool for couple of hours before lunch. We then went for a walk along the beach boardwalk, really a paved path, towards Kuta. This was a really nice walk and surprisingly we were not hassled by vendors. There were a few, but a shake of the head and they accepted it quite well. Our intention was to get a massage and we went to place called Melasti Spa. We had a one hour massage which they called a Melasti massage, a combination of Balinese, Swedish and Shiatsu techniques. How can someone so small inflict such pain? The massage was great and we will be going back there again. It only cost Rp115,000 or about $12. Such good value. ... read more
