Naar ... read more

Hello! It seems to have been a little while but I seem to have been doing a lot of moving over the last few weeks and am getting quite used to curry for 3 meals a day. I did eventually manage to make myself leave the plentiful supply of cornflakes that was Varkala and in a bizarre twist of circumstances checked myself into the local Cult. Yes, that is right i said Cult. Don’t worry 2 months in India has not turned me into a complete Spiritual hippy but having met a lot of people that had been I decided to pay it a visit. Its an interesting place, designed a bit like a 24 floor posh council estate it has shops, juice bars, a swimming pool (full dress only allowed), a charity shop and a ... read more

A potted history of the trip on Gladys (Royal Enfield) with Carolina (Spanish) to Tamil Nadu and Kerala - Jan and Feb 2011. January 14th: I left Bhubaneswar at 5.30am on Gladys (Enfield 350cc) and headed south for Chennai. I was hellbent on just getting there. Hm…. Maybe this was something to do with the anticipations around meeting Carolina, my new friend of three months. We had been Skyping and chatting but never meeting face to face before. Carolina had ‘found’ me on couchsurfing.org and seen that I was also a volunteer in India. I made it to Rajahmundry at around 6pm that day, having ridden more than 650 klms. I found a lodge and was happy to wander around the town eating street foods. The lodge was a bit of a dive, and I did ... read more

Mamallapuram aka Mamabalipuram Day 3 - Monday - Chennai to Mamabailpuram After a leisurely breakfast we jumped into what was really quite a luxurious bus (no air con but windows do the trick!) for a 1.5 hour drive to Mamabalipuram, one of the popular regions south of Chennai. It has quite a different feel and there are a lot more western tourists here - a beachside town with a lot of history, what with it's dead temples (only because of of one part of the temple being damaged it loses it's religious significance and is no longer worthy. Also means you don't have to take shoes off!) After a short walk we hired some bicycles and went touring. Riding was fun although we has to first check our bells worked as this is he main way you ... read more

Yesterday my colleague Lourdes and I went to Habeeb's place to have dinner. Habeeb is a man who lives in Vedanthangal. He's about 45 years old and he is married and has a beautiful daughter. He has a shop. He doesn't have many things in his shop, and we thought that maybe it was another kind of shop.... (some joints behind the cookies?). Well... probably, because he is a business man!! And Lourdes is a business woman so... you can imagine me in the middle, like an umpire on a tennis court! And now I am sure of this. Not joints – but many other things! It’s very funny! It started some weeks ago with beer. We are in the middle of nowhere and it's difficult to find an apple here, so imagine one beer!! It ... read more

Varkala Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are facing the Arabian Sea. It's a nice little place with a lot of tourism. All over the cliff are little shops, where people will say everytime you walk by "look my shop, look my shop". Even if it's the 10th time you walk by on the same day and said politely "No thank you" again and again! Of course we arrived in the dark to make it so much easier for us to find a place to stay! The first two nights we ended up in a crapy place. But we heard of an awesome little guesthouse "Skylark" run by this American lady named Faith and her Indian hubby Saji! Finally we found a place where we could relax. After talking to a few ... read more

Look at him! Isn't he nice? Oh yes, he is!! I want to introduce him to you. He's my editor! Yes, I have an editor! What a high! I explained my project about writing new articles for the Travel Blog and he suggested some ideas to me and offered to make some corrections if I needed them. And he is the one most responsible for this crazy idea about writing another blog in English! It's his fault, for sure (thank you!). And do you know why? First of all he invited me to the Travel Blog site and I was very curious, I wanted to explore it! But, why in English? Because he's Australian. I met him through Couchsurfing.org and I'm spending many hours talking and writing to him in English. Yes, he's also my English ... read more
