Chanderi - 16-17th January 2011 Day 23 - Agra to Chanderi We started the day with breakfast in the rotating restaurant - my excitement about having cereal only to be swallowing the first mouthful as Peta realizes the milk is off... The girls all announced they will not hold my hair back should I need their help later on... so supportive!!  Afterwards it was time to head to the train station for our trip to Chanderi. So on the bus we jump but before we know it Svenga screams - one of the touts has opened her window to try and se her his wares. Like a trooper she has slammed the window shut and yelled at him - so funny! (at least for the rest of us!) A short trip and we are at the ... read more

Agra - 15th January 2011 Day 22 - Delhi to Agra We had a 6am start to catch an early express train to Agra, which was fine as Peta and I are traveliing machines and manage to get fully packed and ready to go in 20 minutes - machines!!  Luckily the train is on time today so no alternatives have to be looked at - apparently it has been running up to 6 hours late in event days due to the fog. So here we are, watching the countryside go by on our first day train of tour 2. There is just so much poverty, rubbish and general crap around it blows our mind - plus when I say crap I LITERALLY mean crap - we have been on the train for about an hour and I ... read more

Delhi - 12th-14th January 2011 Day 20 - Delhi "It would be beautiful to dissapear. Nowhere to be found. It would be beautiful to be the only one to know that you have disappeared." Elias Canetti First full day in Delhi with Jess and Veronica before we meet up with our group at 6pm tonight - looking forward to it! The have organized a driver for the full day for 1,000 rupees (about $23) - seems reasonable for the day and will be interesting to see where he takes us.  I had some really vivid dreams last night - some lovely (sher!) and others a bit scary, like the one where I dreamed my new group was full of only bitchy women - talk about my hell!!! Later.... We had a great day out with Sanjay, ... read more

Day 15 Hampi to Goa Early start 4am to get buses to train station - arrive 5.30am for day train which is supposed to arrive 6.30am, although this is 'India time' which means it can arrive in the next 24 hours or not at all. This is painful - who though up this shit!!!! Plus the 'two way zoo' has become single way and we have a number of young men blatantly staring at us - I am about to start throwing punches!! We also have the unique experience of people joining our little group randomly, just listening and watching us, but generally they stand so close it is uncomfortable. So on the train platform (and I'm going to blame boredom as the train was an hour late) I started doing it back  - and ... read more

Hampi - 6th-7th January 2011 Day 13 - Hampi After 10ish hours on the overnight train 9pm dep arrive 8am then auto rickshaws for 20kms in what felt like freezing conditions (probably 20 degrees!) we find ourselves at a lake, where the locals are having their morning bath, alongside what looks like an extremely old, massive elephant - as you do!!! The boys and girls wash separately (of course) and our challenge was to try and take photos without them obviously bathing - very difficult, especially when all the girls in their colorful saris look so amazing! Next was a small boat to cross the lake - apparently they are designed for 10 people - in true Indian style we had 20 or so, the 9 of us with our backpacks - so maybe the weight ... read more

Mysore - 4th-5th January 2011 Day 11 - overnight train then Mysore Arrived at Bangalore to change trains around 10am - quick spot of breakfast (I succumbed and had some vegemite on bread - really felt like it!) before train 2 to Mysore. Everyone has their own thing on the travel times - some read, sleep, watch movies, write travel blogs..,, we all have our own entertainment. I think we are lucky how good our group is - we are all quite different (except for Holly and I who seem to have been separated at birth) but we all get along very well and have had no issues - very lucky!!!  Mysore - very pretty city with quite wide streets, less rubbish and pollution - quite lovely in fact. We have a short time to freshen ... read more

Kerala Backwaters Homestay Day 8 - Varkala to Kerala Backwaters and homestay After a late finish for NYs we had to get up SUPER early - 5am for a 6am departure, which of course means only a short time to sleep. It was then onto a local train to Allepee before a boat ride for 1.5 hours (think I have already covered off all modes of transport!!!) which was stunning - the river was filled with old rice boats converted into luxury houseboats - very expensive but a popular honeymoon destination. The scenery was just amazing and before we knew it we had arrived at our homestay destination. As there was now 8 of us we had four stay in one house and the other four across the river - Holly and I ended up with ... read more

Day 6 - Varkala - 30th December We awake to find ourselves in Varkala and after a short auto rickshaw ride are at our hotel. It is again basic but has all the amenities, including a very short pathway to the beach and all of the local area. Where we are is acutally quite touristy and caters for all types - we seem to encounter a lot of Germans but the general vibe is very much like Bali, but on a much smaller scale. The area is renowned for its cliffside beaches and strong currents, but of course being a true Aussie I can swim in anything, so its not long before I was in the water! Bring on the Arabian Sea!!! Another day spent doing the usual - seeing a temple (again just amazing) on ... read more

Day 4 - Tuesday - Chennai to Madurai A 7am start saw us having a traditional light rice cake breakfast with some Madras coffee (just think white coffee with lots of sugar and you will get the picture) before we had a 90 minute journey to the train station. The weather has been so lovely and being along the coast has meant we are getting some lovely fresh sea breezes, which are not only cooling but can take away some of the other lingering smells. I can't imagine what it is like living here in the summer, but the winter is very comfortable. Even the train station was located directly next to a lake - quite peaceful and tranquil, especially in comparison to what I understand I will find in Delhi and the north. And so ... read more

Mamallapuram aka Mamabalipuram Day 3 - Monday - Chennai to Mamabailpuram After a leisurely breakfast we jumped into what was really quite a luxurious bus (no air con but windows do the trick!) for a 1.5 hour drive to Mamabalipuram, one of the popular regions south of Chennai. It has quite a different feel and there are a lot more western tourists here - a beachside town with a lot of history, what with it's dead temples (only because of of one part of the temple being damaged it loses it's religious significance and is no longer worthy. Also means you don't have to take shoes off!) After a short walk we hired some bicycles and went touring. Riding was fun although we has to first check our bells worked as this is he main way you ... read more
