Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Vintage car Museum Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur
Yesterday we decided to have a bit of a rest day..we slept in and spent some time reading the paper (cricket score update) and having breakfast, updating the blog writing a couple of postcards for non-internet users etc. In the afternoon we headed out to check out the kingsvintage car collection at the vintage car museum. We saw the Roll Royce from Octopussy, a copule of converted rollers for royalty and some converted as hunting jeeps. The black one was specially made for transporting women and had an intercom. There was also Cadilac, Austins, Morris minors, Chevrolet, Mercades and others. [View Full Entry]

We had a relatively early start and headed by 4WD to see some local villages before heading to Udaipur. We visited a Bisnoi tribe who are largely self sufficient and who care for all living things and try to help protect the environment and animals. They are also one of the only tribes who are legally allowed to consume Opium - apparently this helps when working out in the fields. One of the tribe leaders showed us how he makes it and then proceeded to taste a bit which he mixed with water - it was a tad funny as he [View Full Entry]

By the time we boarded the train from Jaipur to Udaipur it was long since dark and our sleeper carriage crowded with locals. I´ve met a real mix of people whilst travelling by rail here - mostly locals, some on their way home, others on business trips, some chatty, others not - but the group we shared this journey with was by far the friendliest. We later discovered that they were two families also going to Udaipur on holiday (and very excited about it they were too) but at the time, with 12 of us squeezed into seats for 9, my [View Full Entry]

We caught the sleeper train to Udaipur from Ahmedabad (Sleeper class- No AC or bedding). We got on the train around 10:30pm and had no lights so we had to use a torch to find our seats and make our beds with our own sheets (towels and newly bought shawls). We slept along side an Indian family, granddad and the kids. When we arrived just after sunrise at 7:30am the next day we already knew to go straight to the pre paid rickshaw stand or be heavily ripped off. We were heaps lucky to get a guy by the name of [View Full Entry]

Sorry if we have overwhelmed you with entries today we typed some yesterday but were unable to upload them! After our pleasant experience with Jamil the rickshaw driver we decided to meet up with him again for a tour of his home town. He picked us up from our Hotel and took us to see many of the popular city sites. First we went to view the Palace (Rhajistans largest palace with 125 metre front) from across Lake Pitchola, also the palace in the lake (now a hotel) and the third largest hotel in the world across the lake. We drove [View Full Entry]

After our rooftop tears we decided a good cheer me up might be some traditional dancing at the museum (part of the massive palace which is more like 400m not 100m long oops). The setting was on an old stone rooftop courtyard and there was over an hour of dancing and puppet show representing many of the different parts of Rajisthan and Gujarat. It was spectacular and a lot of fun, our favourite was a cymbals dance where two brightly dressed women tied tiny cymbals to their arms and legs and proceeded to hit different ones with a second cymbal swinging [View Full Entry]

Bus Eireann, all is forgiven! To get to Udaipur we travelled on a double decker bus and loads of people on the top deck were getting sick down the side of the bus! What a pleasant experience! Udaipur is a very chilled out town. I took a painting class and got instruction on how to paint a peacock whilst Vinny went off in a jaunt on a cable car up to the ruins of the old outer walls. Parts of the James Bond film Octopussy was filmed here and in our hotel the telly was wheeled out for us to watch [View Full Entry]

Day 6 & 7 - Udaipur Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur
Udaipur is our favorite city so far. It is described as the "Jewel in the Crown" of Rajasthan (mining is main industry here). Today we had a full city tour and yesterday we drove 95 kilometers to visit one of the most important Jain temples in the world- Ranakpur. On the way to Ranakpur yesterday, our soft-spoken guide - Pinu - suggested that we visit a famous healer in a small village outside of Udaipur. Pinu said that the healer could fix Steph’s ankle, so we decided to check it out. Steph was a little nervous, especially when we heard the [View Full Entry]

The only reason we went from Mumbai to Ahmedbad was to pick up a connecting train to Udaipur, so we weren't expecting much and we weren't disappointed. Traffic, that's how I would describe the city. There was a nice temple, a few mosques and an interesting well but no getting away from the traffic. It wasn't even 7 lane highway type traffic that impresses by its shear volume. No, this was whiny little motorbike traffic that comes at you from every direction and beeps it's horn in your right in your ear. On to Udaipur. Wow! Sitting on a rooftop having [View Full Entry]

The whole group seemed to be please to get away from the smog and hectic environment that is Delhi. Our route was an 19hr overnight train to Jaisalmer. This was not to be the heavy drinking scenario associated with our previous train trips in Vietnam. These were sober, quiet events with people going to bed at around 2100 hrs and only waking up when the Charwallers are screaming through the windows at around 0500hrs. To our surprise the train was not delayed and we got Jaisalmer around lunchtime. We were really impressed with our accommodation which was actually inside the massive [View Full Entry]
