Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Viatge nocturn amb tren! ....

Hier koennte man bleiben! Doch die Zeit laeuft und auf den zweiten Blick ist dann doch nicht so viel Party (obwohl uns erklaert wird dass an dem Abend eine wicht [View Full Entry]

India.. is that you? Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur
Through the rain, maybe it was hard to tell sometimes that we are in India! But then we would see someone urinating on the side of the road and then pass a stray dog and a bone-thin cow and realize... actually we are in India! It turned out that there was a car accident on the Nepal side of the Indian border, stopping us from our original plan of going to Varanasi! Quickly our plans changed and we bought a plane ticket to Delhi. August 3, 2008 HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!! Of course I had no idea what to expect when we [View Full Entry]

The city of Udaipur is a city of palaces and peasants owned by a Maharaja. It is really a pleasant respite, with stray cows wandering everywhere. The city is much cleaner than Mumbai, but it is also far more touristy begging the question, is it the 'real' India? Nevertheless, it was a welcome change to Mumbai. Udaipur's claim to fame is it's part in the James Bond film 'Octopussy.' Part of the movie was shot here, and they don't let you forget it. Nearly every hotel and restaurant play Octopussy every nigh. It has to be the cheesiest action film ever [View Full Entry]

We came down to Udaipur on Monday 4th August by bus. The journey was pretty uncomfortable as it was some sort of tourist bus, but for Indian tourists; i.e. no air conditioning, no break from the Bombay Bollywood Music, and no break from the “which country?” questions. We eventually arrived into Udaipur, but our arrival happened to coincide with the heaviest rain we have seen yet. In the time it took us to get off the bus and into the Tuk-tuk parked next to the coach we were soaked through. To make things worse, the Tuk-tuk broke down en-route to our [View Full Entry]

Freewheel down from here big man!

We have been laying low since our last blog. After my last session on the Internet, we went back to our hotel in Udaipur for an early night. I woke up at about 2am with stomach cramps. I woke Chris up who turned on the lights and shouted “Oh god - why’s there a bloody bat flying around the room!?!” He was right, there was a bat flying around our room - flapping like a mad thing, only inches above our heads. Chris (in a moment of bravery) whacked it with a sheet and sent the poor little thing reeling to [View Full Entry]

Short 1 hour flight and we landed in Udaipur, known as India's most romantic city (which didn't really matter since I am only 3 and travelling with my dad). We stayed at a beautiful hotel, Jaiwana Haveli, which was right on Lake pichola and our room over looked the lake. It was great eating breakfast and often dinner on their rooftop restaurant overlooking the lake. We spent a day visiting the city palace and I had fun their pretending I was a princess. We took a boat ride on lake pichola to see the 2 islands. I also had a lot [View Full Entry]

We boarded our train for Hyderabad and after settling in and making our beds the Inspector duly arrived. This is where everything started going pear shaped. Not only did we have the wrong ticket, but we had the right but wrong train and the wrong compartment. Hmm let me try and explain. The train we were on was going to Hyderabad, but it was also going somewhere else 500kms in the wrong direction of Hyderabad and our ticket had us heading that way - that is though when the train stopped at 1.30am the following morning and split in two.
