Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

It seems at bit of a long time since I wrote this as it was hard to find a computer in India and then we have just got back from trekking in Nepal but i'll try and remember what we did!! Steve was sick this first day so I did the city palace alone and then again the next day. It was really quiet the day I went as it was the day before Diwali but when we went together it was packed!! The palace is really beautiful with lovely grounds on the famous lake with great views of the famous [View Full Entry]

Where did December come from? No one warned me it was coming! How rude! It’s just odd to picture Europe and all its grey splendour right now as I’ve been roasting in the desert for the past two weeks. Having said that however, today it’s raining; very unseasonal and really not appreciated! It makes me chuckle actually because for so many years now I’ve been out on the streets of the West Country doing some random World AIDS Day event in the pouring rain (it ALWAYS rained) and now I’m in the desert, it’s 30 degrees and months away from rainy [View Full Entry]

Took a 5 hr bus that took 8 hrs to get to Udaipur. Road was so bumpy that I literally flew out of my seat and hit my head on the roof!!! Not kidding!! City is beautiful, covered in white washed buildings, narrow lanes, Palaces and Lakes. The Lkae Palace here (5 Star) was used in a Bond movie years ago. The lakes, well, not for swimming. This is India! Everything goes into there! Many beautiful sunsets here though. We were here when Mumbai was attacked. Kinda scary as not very far away. All we see is Hindi News so unsure [View Full Entry]

Having now lived a technology devoid and relatively understated existence for the past month, I have become disinclined to write it all down. So much has happened that I want to share. Over the course of this time, have been astounded by the experiences I ‘ve had, the people I’ve met, and the ideas that continue to inspired me. Well occupied by the internship phase of my program, I feel that so far it has been both a pleasure and a blessing to have the opportunity to experience rural India through the eyes of a grassroots NGO. In the process [View Full Entry]

What a stunning city and we found an amazing place guest house that overlooked most of the city. Think we deserved it after the last few days of traveling. Udaipur has real character surrounded by mountains with a palaces scattered on top of some of them so the raj can down on all he rule over. The whinnding streets r dressed with tinsel and fairy lights, fire works exploid everywhere at random making it sound like ur in the middle of a war zone and all for dewali. Its a bit like xmas and bonfire night mixed in equal parts. Apparently [View Full Entry]

Election Day Update Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur
While we are sitting, waiting for the election results, I thought I'd tell you about an experience that Dan Lewis and Ashley Hartman thought was one of the most amazing. It was a traffic jam in Jodhpur. Big deal? Remember I wrote about the narrow streets and the traffic that was so intense that I had trouble describing it? Well, try to picture this; a 10 foot wide road with vendor stalls on both sides jutting into the street. Bicycles, motorcycles, three-wheeled taxis (there's a picture of one in last night's blog) and pedestrians going both ways in a crush like [View Full Entry]

Heck of a day here in India. Even in the market this afternoon, people that spoke no English saw us and shouted "Obama." This was a big deal even for people that didn't know anything about our country. When we do something consistent with what we say, makes others look up to us and respect us. We hope that translates into positive things for us. We say we are a liberal democracy and that anyone in our country can grow up to be President. Now we've proved it. Also, this afternoon, Vincent got word that his brother had died unexpectedly. Fran [View Full Entry]

November 3, 2008. The day before election. Actually, here in India it’s a day before the election but back in the U.S. of A., it’s still two days before. Follow that line of thinking if you can. We’re flying on an ATR - 500, a funny looking turboprop, soon to land in Jodhpur. Our group is jelling well. Vincent, our instructor, is being very, very nice. Someone must have spoken to him last night. Either that, or he heard someone (who I can’t imagine) refer to him as an asshole at dinner. Maybe he’s just relaxing with the group and, since [View Full Entry]

Udaipur 21/10/2008 Have I mentioned.....? masala chai .... masala omelettes.... , banana pancakes........ , Indian eagles......., the stink of urine and open sewers,........ speed bumps in the road that are enough to break your axle as well as your back..... throat clearing and spitting........squirrels that look like little chipmonks......cow dung...... Having hired a taxi to get us to Ranakpur, we were then stranded as there was no town from which to get any sort of transport to our next destination, Udaipur. No worries, buses could be flagged down outside the h [View Full Entry]
