Once again the sustained heat of the plains, became overbearing and not for the first time, we followed in the footsteps of the British Raj and headed to the cool fresh air of a hill station. This time it was Mt Abu. As it was my birthday, Laura went to the special effort of booking us into the "Royal Suite" at Jaipur House, the Maharaja of Jodhpur's Summer gettaway. It was lush! We had the best view in town at the top of the palace and a four-room suite to lounge around in - it was hard to draw ourselves outside! The little un also managed to magically appear some birthday cake and candles. Getting champagne was a challenge too far in India - a nice bottle of white wine was a perfectly good substitute and ... read more

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... Mt Abu is Rajasthan’s only hill station& is largely hotels that cater for romantic holidays for both Gujaratis & Rajasthanis. It is a hilly plateau at 1200m & so is both hilly and lush. Set around a lake it reminded me of Dalat in Vietnam. I met up with the Swiss retired teacher turned traveler and B&W photographer that I had met in Udaipur. While I can appreciate B&W photography if I only had one word to describe India I would say colourful. He has exhibitions at home of his work which is largely about people in working situations. We both joined a day tour of the town’s sights which consisted mostly of a temple tour with only 2-3 that were really worth seeing. The Dilware Jain Temples rank ... read more

Spent a few days in the hill station of Mount Abu. Shree Ganesh guest house runs walks around the surrounding hillsides....20 rps and you can go on as many as you like. Not a bad little place at all. Mount Abu was a welcome relief in Rajasthan, not only as it was a little cooler...in fact got well chilly at night, but also because finally it was the Indian tourists getting all the hassle. Spent 2 days doing the treks, unfortunately on the last day our guide was ill so we bailed on the treks...still I had to sort my train ticket out of there to Mumbai.... read more

I'm losing track of the date and, most definitely, the days are all starting to blend, but we left Jaisalmer via sleeper train to Jodhpur at about 11:00 pm and arrived around 5:00 am. We navigated through the mass of sleeping people at the train station; this is common at most train stations. There is, nonetheless, ample room to manuever through the station without problems. We were beseiged by the usually auto-rickshaw drivers; my strategy at this point (especially at 5:00 pm on 5 hours sleep) is to tell them to leave us alone, which usually does not work at all. It usually results in renewed aggressiveness. My next step is to completely refuse to deal with the aggressors, walk outside and get some guy who's just standing around towards the back of the queue (if ... read more
