It was the first and the begining of all the travels that I made, the marriage of our colleague, in Ahmedabad and we three decided to extend it to Mt.Abu and Udaipur. There is a overnight train from Ahmedabad to Udaipur, but its on ur luck that it has to be on time, for us it was, Mt. Abu the only hill station of Rajasthan, can be also reached by bus, from Ahmedabad. Government buses are available to take u on the top, and there is no special way so no point in hiring a private tansport, Govt transport is cheap and comfortabla and also the frquency is good. Over the top you can hire a jeep or a bike, u can cover all the spot in a day, but overnite stay is advisable to enjoy ... read more

Upaipur to Mt Abu - 185km, approx 3 hour drive 9th December The taxi rides between towns offered us just as much of the Indian experience we had been hoping for. Mr Rau soon understood we were on a budget so stopping at tourist restaurants where a tea was Rs. 50 (Rs. 10 in most towns) wasn’t what we wanted or were willing to pay! Instead he started stopping for tea at local tea stands where a masala tea was only Rs. 5 and eat at the local restaurants where a hearty curry was less than the expensive coffee of the tourist restaurants. The local places were always much more interesting to stop at, we were an interest to the locals and it also gave us an opportunity to speak to some locals. Although the ... read more

Hey Guys, Well we survived a nice Indian bus ride all the way to the top of Mt. Abu! It actually wasn't that bad although we were a little leary at first looking at the side of the bus and seeing nice puke spray stains from every window. Good news for us our seats were in the very front! So we arrived in Mt. Abu which is really nice, we were somewhat worried since we always just show up without pre-booking any accommodation and we heard that with Diwali just around the corner we might be SOL but we managed to find a good place for a whopping $7/night. We decided the easiest and cheapest way to see the sights was with a tour so we signed up for the Government Tourist office special. The tour ... read more

Sorry it has taken a while to get this updated... after the north I hit Goa where it was very difficult to do much else than eat good food and chill by the beach, getting back on it now though! So going back a few weeks now, from Udaipur I took a bus at 8am on the 25th of Jan up to Mt. Abu. I had read that there were loads of hotels there, so I decided not to book ahead since I was due to arrive at around 2pmish and thought that that would give me plenty of time to look around and find a good deal on a hotel room. I first started realising something was different on the bus there, it was full of not the usual indian crowd, but wealthier, very excitable ... read more

Since leaving Agra we went to Jaipur in Rajasthan, where we both got a bout of the Delhi Belly! We knew it would catch up with us sooner or later, so we have been feeling a little delicate to say the least! Jaipur itself was CRAZY!!! we have never seen chaos like it.... cars, mopeds, bikes, tuk tuks, rickshaws, cows, goats, dogs, monkey, cats...the list goes on (including the indians!), all on the road, all guns blazing! certainately not a place to relax, and boy did we feel it, to be honest we both couldn't wait to leave!! Next stop was Jodphur, which again was a city but this time not as manic, both places were pretty hot, Ami had the factor 50 out! Until then we hadent really been feeling the heat so we had ... read more

Hello again, and seasons greetings to one and all. Hope you're all having a merry christmas, and wishing you a happy new year as well! It's been a while since the last blog, and there's a lot to catch up on, so straight down to business. Last update we were just about to leave Varanasi on the night train to Agra. We got to the station in plenty of time, only to find our train was 3 hours delayed. This, plus another 5 hours delay en route, didn't make for the best introduction to Indian train travel. By the time we reached Agra it was mid-afternoon, and a little late to start sightseeing, so we just settled for a big meal (our first since lunch the day before!) with a rooftop view of the Taj Mahal. ... read more

The bus climbed a steep winding road as we left the hot plains of Rajasthan and headed towards my next stop, a village called Mount Abu. A place completely different from anywhere else I’d been in India and I’m very glad I decided to visit. Mount Abu is the highest point in Rajasthan and as we climbed the temperature steadily dropped to a comfortable 22 0C. The hills were covered in tall trees and black-faced monkeys sat in groups along the roadside. Before long it started to rain and then we were in the clouds, misty swirls everywhere and the edge of the cliff disappeared into grey. Once in Mount Abu a short damp walk had me booked into a room and fed with a good lunch at one of the restaurants in town. This place ... read more

Following on from the excitement of the desert theatre puppet show we made our way to Mt. Abu - the Blackpool of Rajasthan and the state's only hill station. Resplendent with tourist tat and more ice cream than you could ever eat, even the vile, putrid smelling green lake helped complete the illusion. It also is the proud owner of its polo field, although it is only used once a year for horse polo and once for camel polo (I think they must have better behaved camels than Jonny and Hoodu). The main highlight of Mt. Abu is the magnificent Dewala Jain temples (reputed to be the most intricate in the world), weird rock formation and Trevor the crocodile. Well, we assumed he was called Trevor as he was the only living thing to be found ... read more

Mount Abu Day 10 & 11 of Rajasthan Tour AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR………..his place is just great. The streets are clean, so not many animals come shopping with you. There are little hilly roads and a lake at the bottom with boats you can peddle. You can walk everywhere, so no tuk tuks in town, and there are like 10 ice cream bars - crisp cone, chocolate coated ice cream sprinkled with bits of toffee…yum yum yum. Mt Abu is a hill station, so colder than elsewhere and it is where the Indian residents come to vacation. The food is great and we love the prices, they don’t have foreign tourists menus here! Over 2 days we see 8 other foreign tourists only. It’s a lovely place to walk around, we walked down one whole side of a street ... read more
