So, currently enjoying the peace and quiet of an internet cafe in a very strange place, Mount Abu. It's an Indian honeymoon spot, and the only way it can be described is like Eurodisney of the 1950s. There's a lake with old-fashioned pedalos, where coy newly- marrieds hit the water together. The average age of the newly-weds is around 22 I would guess, and I suspect many are arranged marriages, as the couples shift awkardly in each others presence, in fact some look like theyre grimacing as they walk along holding hands!!The girls have a fashion of sandals with socks, while the guys are wearing trousers which are just a little too tight and short! For some reason we are subjects if curiosity and will probably appear in far too many honeymoon photos!! I am getting ... read more

December 16, 2010: Mt. Abu Sam Wrote: We met with our guide, Dalpat Singh Rathore, promptly at 10am. Our first stop was St. Mary’s School – where I attended over 40 years ago. The school still looks the same but they have obviously expanded. For example, the school road from Abu road was all forest when I attended the school – now it has houses built on both sides all the way up. The school had shut down for their winter break but some of the teachers were there and the day students were sporadically coming there with their parents to collect their report cards. We got to meet some of the staff and students. This school has definitely fared better than Bhavan’s in Baroda. After that we went to visit the Patel Boarding House where ... read more

December 15, 2010 – Ambaji Temple (Gujarat) / Mt. Abu Yamini Wrote: Feeling a little sad to leave Udaipur this morning. Wish we had one more day to explore this incredible gem of a city. We met our driver, Ashfaq, at 9:30 to begin our onward journey to Ambaji Temple and Mt. Abu. As this was the first time we were on our own without a guide and only the driver, it gave us a chance to get to know our driver better. Although I think he can speak English, he doesn’t seem too comfortable speaking it. Fortunately, we do understand Hindi and can reasonably speak it, so we are fine with communication. He tells us he lives in Delhi with his wife of 2 years and has a four month old, son. He seems very ... read more

It was the first and the begining of all the travels that I made, the marriage of our colleague, in Ahmedabad and we three decided to extend it to Mt.Abu and Udaipur. There is a overnight train from Ahmedabad to Udaipur, but its on ur luck that it has to be on time, for us it was, Mt. Abu the only hill station of Rajasthan, can be also reached by bus, from Ahmedabad. Government buses are available to take u on the top, and there is no special way so no point in hiring a private tansport, Govt transport is cheap and comfortabla and also the frquency is good. Over the top you can hire a jeep or a bike, u can cover all the spot in a day, but overnite stay is advisable to enjoy ... read more

Upaipur to Mt Abu - 185km, approx 3 hour drive 9th December The taxi rides between towns offered us just as much of the Indian experience we had been hoping for. Mr Rau soon understood we were on a budget so stopping at tourist restaurants where a tea was Rs. 50 (Rs. 10 in most towns) wasn’t what we wanted or were willing to pay! Instead he started stopping for tea at local tea stands where a masala tea was only Rs. 5 and eat at the local restaurants where a hearty curry was less than the expensive coffee of the tourist restaurants. The local places were always much more interesting to stop at, we were an interest to the locals and it also gave us an opportunity to speak to some locals. Although the ... read more

Hey Guys, Well we survived a nice Indian bus ride all the way to the top of Mt. Abu! It actually wasn't that bad although we were a little leary at first looking at the side of the bus and seeing nice puke spray stains from every window. Good news for us our seats were in the very front! So we arrived in Mt. Abu which is really nice, we were somewhat worried since we always just show up without pre-booking any accommodation and we heard that with Diwali just around the corner we might be SOL but we managed to find a good place for a whopping $7/night. We decided the easiest and cheapest way to see the sights was with a tour so we signed up for the Government Tourist office special. The tour ... read more

Sorry it has taken a while to get this updated... after the north I hit Goa where it was very difficult to do much else than eat good food and chill by the beach, getting back on it now though! So going back a few weeks now, from Udaipur I took a bus at 8am on the 25th of Jan up to Mt. Abu. I had read that there were loads of hotels there, so I decided not to book ahead since I was due to arrive at around 2pmish and thought that that would give me plenty of time to look around and find a good deal on a hotel room. I first started realising something was different on the bus there, it was full of not the usual indian crowd, but wealthier, very excitable ... read more
