I’m always discovering new things about my beloved India. I wasn’t previously aware, for example, that many Indian people don’t know the actual date on which they were born. Until just three or four years ago, there was no official registration of births, so some children were given notional birthdays. A friend here has his birthday on 4th January. He was the fourth child born to his parents. His siblings’ birthdays are on 1st, 2nd and 3rd January. Some people have two birthdays – one on the notional or actual date and one on a memorable religious date. My good friend Khuman had one of his birthdays a couple of days ago, on Maha Shivrati (a lunar festival in remembrance of the powerful god Shiva). His actual date of birth is not until ten days or ... read more

I’m sure he shouldn’t have been driving after the excesses of last night’s party, but Lajpal came to collect me from my hotel in his little car, pristine white and shiny when he received it as a wedding gift but now showing the scars of battles with Rajasthan’s roads and collisions with badly-driven cars. We drove first to Rajshri’s parents’ home in a part of Jaipur that, despite having been there several times, I could never hope to find on my own in the maze of traffic-crammed streets. Then we were on our way – a five-and-a-half-hour journey would take us south-west on National Highway 8, skirting Ajmer and Beawar to Lajpal’s home in Sadri (near Ranakpur, if you’re looking for it on a map!). Here, with financial support from his family and bank, he’s ... read more

Mt. Abu Gujaratis (People of Gujarat – India) are fond of travelling and during any major festival or vacation in any and every tourist spot in India you will find Gujaratis. Unfortunately, Gujarat does not have a good hill station. Saputara (South Gujarat) is supposed to be in Gujarat geographically, it is closer to Maharashtra. It does not have the climate or infrastructure to be a good hill station. Mt. Abu, officially in the State of Rajasthan, is the favorite destination for a weekend outing for the Gujaratis. Any season is good to visit Mt Abu, except peak summer. In winters you can enjoy zero degree temperature, in monsoon you can experience clouds passing through your hotel room or through your car. Summers do get hot (35 degree ... read more

Ma... read more

So, currently enjoying the peace and quiet of an internet cafe in a very strange place, Mount Abu. It's an Indian honeymoon spot, and the only way it can be described is like Eurodisney of the 1950s. There's a lake with old-fashioned pedalos, where coy newly- marrieds hit the water together. The average age of the newly-weds is around 22 I would guess, and I suspect many are arranged marriages, as the couples shift awkardly in each others presence, in fact some look like theyre grimacing as they walk along holding hands!!The girls have a fashion of sandals with socks, while the guys are wearing trousers which are just a little too tight and short! For some reason we are subjects if curiosity and will probably appear in far too many honeymoon photos!! I am getting ... read more

December 16, 2010: Mt. Abu Sam Wrote: We met with our guide, Dalpat Singh Rathore, promptly at 10am. Our first stop was St. Mary’s School – where I attended over 40 years ago. The school still looks the same but they have obviously expanded. For example, the school road from Abu road was all forest when I attended the school – now it has houses built on both sides all the way up. The school had shut down for their winter break but some of the teachers were there and the day students were sporadically coming there with their parents to collect their report cards. We got to meet some of the staff and students. This school has definitely fared better than Bhavan’s in Baroda. After that we went to visit the Patel Boarding House where ... read more

December 15, 2010 – Ambaji Temple (Gujarat) / Mt. Abu Yamini Wrote: Feeling a little sad to leave Udaipur this morning. Wish we had one more day to explore this incredible gem of a city. We met our driver, Ashfaq, at 9:30 to begin our onward journey to Ambaji Temple and Mt. Abu. As this was the first time we were on our own without a guide and only the driver, it gave us a chance to get to know our driver better. Although I think he can speak English, he doesn’t seem too comfortable speaking it. Fortunately, we do understand Hindi and can reasonably speak it, so we are fine with communication. He tells us he lives in Delhi with his wife of 2 years and has a four month old, son. He seems very ... read more
