Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Hello again, and seasons greetings to one and all. Hope you're all having a merry christmas, and wishing you a happy new year as well! It's been a while since the last blog, and there's a lot to catch up on, so straight down to business. Last update we were just about to leave Varanasi on the night train to Agra. We got to the station in plenty of time, only to find our train was 3 hours delayed. This, plus another 5 hours delay en route, didn't make for the best introduction to Indian train travel. By the time we [View Full Entry]

The bus climbed a steep winding road as we left the hot plains of Rajasthan and headed towards my next stop, a village called Mount Abu. A place completely different from anywhere else I’d been in India and I’m very glad I decided to visit. Mount Abu is the highest point in Rajasthan and as we climbed the temperature steadily dropped to a comfortable 22 0C. The hills were covered in tall trees and black-faced monkeys sat in groups along the roadside. Before long it started to rain and then we were in the clouds, misty swirls everywhere and the edge [View Full Entry]

Following on from the excitement of the desert theatre puppet show we made our way to Mt. Abu - the Blackpool of Rajasthan and the state's only hill station. Resplendent with tourist tat and more ice cream than you could ever eat, even the vile, putrid smelling green lake helped complete the illusion. It also is the proud owner of its polo field, although it is only used once a year for horse polo and once for camel polo (I think they must have better behaved camels than Jonny and Hoodu). The main highlight of Mt. Abu is the magnificent Dewala [View Full Entry]

Mount Abu Day 10 & 11 of Rajasthan Tour AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR………..his place is just great. The streets are clean, so not many animals come shopping with you. There are little hilly roads and a lake at the bottom with boats you can peddle. You can walk everywhere, so no tuk tuks in town, and there are like 10 ice cream bars - crisp cone, chocolate coated ice cream sprinkled with bits of toffee…yum yum yum. Mt Abu is a hill station, so colder than elsewhere and it is where the Indian residents come to vacation. The food is great and we love [View Full Entry]

What Abu-tiful Stay!

Once again the sustained heat of the plains, became overbearing and not for the first time, we followed in the footsteps of the British Raj and headed to the cool fresh air of a hill station. This time it was Mt Abu. As it was my birthday, Laura went to the special effort of booking us into the "Royal Suite" at Jaipur House, the Maharaja of Jodhpur's Summer gettaway. It was lush! We had the best view in town at the top of the palace and a four-room suite to lounge around in - it was hard to draw ourselves outside! [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Mt Abu in the evening, went to the guest house and just chilled out that evening. The next morning I went to see the Nakki lake and had a nice walk around and it was so peaceful and very romantic as everyone there were on there honeymoon from Gujarat! Lol So later on that day I went to sunset point which was really strange as everyone was looking at me thinking what is she doing by herself! Anyway so I found a nice spot away from all the couples and was soon joined by this girl from Germany, [View Full Entry]

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... Mt Abu is Rajasthan’s only hill station& is largely hotels that cater for romantic holidays for both Gujaratis & Rajasthanis. It is a hilly plateau at 1200m & so is both hilly and lush. Set around a lake it reminded me of Dalat in Vietnam. I met up with the Swiss retired teacher turned traveler and B&W photographer that I had met in Udaipur. While I can appreciate B&W photography if I only had one word to describe India I would say colourful. He has exhibitions at home of his work which is l [View Full Entry]

Spent a few days in the hill station of Mount Abu. Shree Ganesh guest house runs walks around the surrounding hillsides....20 rps and you can go on as many as you like. Not a bad little place at all. Mount Abu was a welcome relief in Rajasthan, not only as it was a little cooler...in fact got well chilly at night, but also because finally it was the Indian tourists getting all the hassle. Spent 2 days doing the treks, unfortunately on the last day our guide was ill so we bailed on the treks...still I had to sort my train [View Full Entry]

Mount Abu

I'm losing track of the date and, most definitely, the days are all starting to blend, but we left Jaisalmer via sleeper train to Jodhpur at about 11:00 pm and arrived around 5:00 am. We navigated through the mass of sleeping people at the train station; this is common at most train stations. There is, nonetheless, ample room to manuever through the station without problems. We were beseiged by the usually auto-rickshaw drivers; my strategy at this point (especially at 5:00 pm on 5 hours sleep) is to tell them to leave us alone, which usually does not work at all.
