I’ve been keeping track of how long I have left here by the number of Malaria pills I still have to take. At last count I have 3 left… so I’ll be here for about 3 more weeks, but then it’s Wednesday today and in L.A. Wednesday is the new Friday so this week is practically over… Not much has happened since the last blog, we’ve just been visiting more colonies etc. This last weekend we were in Kollam where we visited the “Talachira” colony. So far this colony has been my favorite. What I’ve gotten so far is that every colony is different in the sense that each colony has different problems that it is trying to overcome. I guess the easiest way to explain it is each colony has its own vibe… We arrived ... read more

13.7.06 So we left Bombay on the overnight train to Jaipur, a 20 hour journey. Rob and I were for most of the journey, thank God, the only ones in our carriage. The carriage was comprised of two blue pleather bunk beds. Thankfully there was air con, and we were given two white sheets, a pillow and blanket each by the porters. I was able to make myself a nice nest and actually slept for ages. The dinner was even more civilized. We were asked if we wanted ‘to eat’ and on saying yes, about half an hour later a porter brought two trays to our cabin. Each tray had a vegetable curry, daal, rice, pickle and chapatti and it was delicious. Come morning and porters were up and down the carriages every half an hour ... read more

Hey to all Our plan in Kangra was to catch the toy train to Pathankot (one of only a handful of these trains in the world). The problem was that no one spoke english so we couldn't find out where to catch it from. We did however go and see the famous traveling magic show, that was passing through Kangra. We weren't allowed to take any photos, which was a shame because it really was a fantastic show. We embarked then on our first train trip. Getting tickets and finding the right train was a major test for our patients and our abilities to stay calm. After an 18 hr trip and covered in the desert sand we arrived in Jodphur. We've met some lovely young guys on the train and had lots of fun ... read more

We were not prepared for India. The first inkling of this fact came on our Indian Airways flight from Bangkok to New Delhi. Our fellow travelers clearly had a different concept of personal space from our own. The man sitting behind Alissa, for example, felt perfectly comfortable draping his arm over the top of her seat, brushing her head with gesticulations, and emphasizing conversation points by pounding his tray table and, as a result, violently jarring Alissa. He was immune to our dirty looks. That was nothing. Upon arrival to Indira Ghandi International Airport it became clear that we were totally out of our depth. Our guidebook had told us to look for a government-run tourist information booth, so coming across an official looking booth branded “government tourist information” we trusted its occupants to help us ... read more

To save some money I cancelled my plane ticket from Leh to Delhi and decided to take the bus instead. I think in Canada the prospect of travelling 3 days by bus would outweigh the $150 saved.... but India tends to warp your perspective of money. Anyways the first leg is a 2 day trip from Leh to Manali over some of the highest passes in the world. We didn't hit any snow, which is very lucky as the day before I left busses were taking 3.5 days to do the trip. I had my eyes shut most of the time but my friends saw tons of trucks which rolled down the hill, and one which was like half off and attached by cables to a rock. I was stuck between a coughing old man and ... read more

Jodhpur, the blue city, was great. I think it was perhaps one of our favourites so far and we had a really great time, despite only being there a day or so. The Mehrangarh fort which overlooks the city is amazing. The very smart maharaja or Jodhpur rescued the fort from disrepair by establishing a trust to manage it as a tourist attraction and they have done a fine job. The place is really clean, and as a foreigner you actually get something for the inflated entry charge you have to pay. The audio tour provided is actually informative, not only about the fort itself, but also about local customs and the life of the maharaja. It has lots of colourful anecdotes and background music which really brings the fort to life. Also, the displays are ... read more

Ranakpur - Jodhpur We drove from Udaipur to Jodhpur and stopped to watch some locals haul water up from a deep well with oxen and a wheel-chain-bucket mechanism, the water pours into a trough where the women wash the clothes and babies before draining into the nearby fields of crops... a very efficient use of water. The area seemed very nice but my driver seemed to be telling me that I would be attacked with arrows(?) if we were to drive here at night. Also I think hordes of french tourists have been hitting up most of India with boxes of candies as all the kids keep asking me for "bon-bons". We stopped in Ranakpur to see a famous Jain temple. The stone carvings there were really amazing but I didn't see anyone wearing cloth over ... read more

" It's a fascinating place to explore, blessed by a wealth of mosques, mausoleums, palaces and fortifications whose grace is in complete contrast to the sculptural extravagance of the Chalukyan and Hoysala temples further the south of Karnataka" ( lonely planet) Oh, my god, or do I haved to write " oh, Allah"... Bijapur is a dirty, ugly and unfriendly town, with ennoying riksjadrivers and creepy little kids... they got me on my nerves! we arrived by bus from Badami after a trip of 5 hours. My back was hurting and my bud became senseless. The driver was doing his best to arrive on time, but a traficjam and chaos in front of the busstation made the last 50 meters almost impossible. Oh, yes there was a police-officer, but he made it even worse... finely we ... read more

4 May thurs ordered Aman's chicken for the final time. but this this ate it at silver bell's. we asked the manager beforehand if it was ok..but still felt a bit guilty. it was very good as usual though...being able to sit down properly and not have to worry about flies or dogs. 5 May Fri last day at surgery today. saw a splenectomy. initially the boy was thought to have hydatid cyst in the spleen. so in the OT they did all the precautions to avoid spillage. aspirating the contents out first...ended up aspirating 1.5L fluid out. and then injected some betadine back before the excision. but at the end of it all, when they cut the specimen open, there were no daughter cyst, so it wasn't a hydatid cyst afterall, but just a massive ... read more
