We are staying in a lovely old guesthouse with a view of the extremely green lake. It is run by an old man and his wife (who must be in their late 70’s) and their various younger relations. We walked along the narrow Brahmin - blue lanes and havelis to reach Bundi Palace - a decaying palace that has recently been cleaned up and opened to the public. Entry was through a huge marble elephant gate - it was magnificent and peaceful. Chitrasala is next door, with a beautiful garden and several of the rooms are covered in paintings. Behind the palaces is Taragarh - another huge fort (India loves forts the way Europe loves cathedrals!). The fort is a rambling heap but has great views of Bundi and the countryside. We were convinced that we ... read more

The Buildup.... wonderful! "We spend so much money on weddings", sighed Mr. Singh. He might also have said: energy. An Indian wedding requires stamina from all concerned. An unceasing stream of ritual, prayer, blessings, dance and music. For days, our guesthouse, Haveli Katkoun has been filled with song. Family members have arrived from all over India and a happy chaos has reigned. We are the only remaining paying guests - a tiny foreign enclave in a sea of Hindu ritual. Ladies begin singing at 06.00 each morning, accompanied by the beat of a drum. "They are giving thanks to God for the marriage ceremony" the groom told me. Outside the front door an old man with a red turban plays a pipe. I think of him as the mad snake charmer. He's also accompanied by a ... read more

Once in a while you meet someone extraordinary. Someone with such an infectious positive energy, that the only thing you can do around them is smile. Mr. Prakash Gupta - alias Kukki, is known throughout Bundi. He began talking as he welcomed us into his living room cum bedroom, pulling out book after book, he proudly showed us articles that had been published about him in German, French, Hindi and English, and a photo of himself with the President of India. His energy took my breath away, like a tornado he laughed and talked continuously. To Mr. Kukki everything is at the least 'very fantastic'. A school drop-out, educated only until eighth grade, he's taught himself everything he knows. His passion for archeology began when he was a young boy, he found his first coin when ... read more

When we realised that Bundi was going to celebrate a festival we made sure that we arrived in town a couple of days before. The people are celebrating Teej - we were not sure what would happen but we read that it would be colourful! Bundi is a small town overlooked by a deserted fort and palace and though on the tourist trail supposedly not spoiled by the industry. We loved the town at first sight though we were tired when we arrived. We had booked a hotel room from Udaipur but upon arrival changed and went to another hotel (the wonderful Nawal Sagar Palace - this one a renovated palace on the main road and beside on of two lakes in the town. In the centre of the lake stands a small temple. The ... read more

Kirjoitin paivemmalla pitkan selostuksen Holin vietostamme. Holista sanottakoon, etta olimme riehakkaissa bileissa.

Kavimme asken ostamassa holittelutarvikkeita. Ostin kakunkoristelupursottimen nakoisen pyssyn ja varikasta jauhetta. Nyt meilla on varmaa tietoa, etta holi on ylihuomenna. Tama juhlan ajankohta on pitkaan ollut hamaran peitossa ja itse asiassa luulimme jo viettaneemme sita. Delhissa vesi-ilmapallon heittanyt oli kuitenkin nahtavasti todella varhainen holittelija. Kulkue taas, mita katselimme keskiyolla, oli varmaan jokin aivan toinen juhla. Hindufestifaalejahan riittaa!

Finally caught up on the blogging! Being a 'Blogger' is like a full time job of fun and reporting. Poor, overworked me! If you need a little help, the previous 3 blogs were 'back-blogs.' Didn't want my fans to miss a beat!!! My final destination before heading to Mumbai and flying home is a small village called Bundi. Several weeks ago I was on a boat to Malaysia (for a visa run) and met an older Dutch man. He told me two things, 1. Likely my ancestors are from Holland (based on my last name) and 2. Bundi is the best place in all of India. Lucky for me, it happens to be on my track across. Remember The Pink Cell? The following two nights after 3 restless nights in The Cell, I slept on a ... read more

So day 6 in Bundi, we have stayed here a few days longer then anticipated because we were invited (well rather we invited ourselves) to have dinner with the family of this Indian artist we met here. His name is Yug and he was very excited to have his sister cook for us. So we extended our stay and decided to do a little relaxing while we were here. Bundi is an amazing little town, which doesn't see alot of tourists so it was terrific insight into Indian culture, full of the friendliest and most inviting people I have met. No hagglers yelling "my friend my friend, come see my shop!" WE stayed the first night at R.N. Haveli a cheap little guest house highly recommended in lonely planet. It seemed cheap enough and the room ... read more

A ella parece no molestarle.
