We travelled through villages and farmlands to get to the small town of Bundi, in a remote part of rural Rajasthan. Bundi was a perfect town to explore on foot, with the streets & markets full of energy, colour and every day Rajasthani life. We spent the day visiting the Palace and it's beautiful murals, step-wells and the endless bazzars. Our stay in Bundi was far to short, but a welcome change of pace. Bundi is relatively new on the tourist map so the negative effects of the tourism industry haven't hit here yet. There were no street children begging for money and store owners would leave you be after the first NO.... read more

9.30PM. 20th Dec 2010. (I dedicate this post to the awesome travelers I met in Bundi, who've made my stay in Bundi enjoyable.) I boarded the bus from Udaipur Bus Station that was meant to go to Bundi. I called up Uma Megh Haveli in Bundi earlier, and said that I'll reach there slightly earlier than expected, thus I won't be left outside in the cold (Oh it was bloody freezing, I'm not really used to cold climate). The Lonely Planet mentioned this about bus rides to Bundi: "Bus rides to Bundi are for thrill-seekers and sadomasochists only." Hmmm.. well it wouldn't hurt to try it out, besides, life is short for one to enjoy, so make full use of it aye? Wham! Boom. Bam! What a fucking rocky and bumpy ride throughout the whole 6 ... read more

All packed up and ready to leave Pushkar, we met on the ground floor of the hotel with our bags and our fondness for this little town in our hearts. We said our goodbyes to our very friendly hosts and made our way to the bus stand. on the way to the bus i turned around to see our hotel manager pull up on his scooter to say farewell and wish us luck on the way. The bus was full when we arrived at the stand so we put our luggage on the rack and got comfy on our bags on the roof. I really enjoyed riding on the roof of the bus, plenty of leg room, open air, comfy seating, a pleasant view of the journey and a party atmosphere around us. Plenty of laughter, ... read more

It would take an exceptionally hard-hearted person to not be just a little bit charmed by Bundi. Its beauty lies not in the attractions it possess, indeed the only disappointing part of our time here was our visit to the palace, but rather in the quality of its heart, the purity of its soul. I apologise for my shameless hippy-speak and ridiculous anthropomorphism, but Bundi's charm is completely intangible and very hard to describe. It cannot be found in the exhibits in its museums, in the grandeur of its palace or the strength of its fort; you will not find it being served in one of its restaurants, in a haveli hotel, inside a Shiva temple, nor at the bottom of one of its numerous tanks. Your time will be wasted if you attempt to find ... read more

... read more

OK, after another dreadful night bus, this one being not quite as uncomfortable as the first, we arrived in Bundi and at our hotel at the crack of down. Bundi is a nice little relaxing town, dominated by a large fort, the Taragarh Fort, and the hotels area mostly scattered around a lake. The town is also famously known for being the town which gave Rudyard Kipling the inspiration for Kim. If you haven't read this or neither really know who he is, he wrote The jungle book! We spent the first afternoon catching up on our sleep and cooling off under our fan, as the heat here was unbearable. Come the afternoon, we mooched around the city, dinned at a rooftop restaurant, an... read more

“No, no, you can’t go outside now. Your fever is hot and your blood is very warm. I’ve given you medicine for pain and you must sleep now. I’m sorry,” said Mama, the owner of the 250 year old guest house in Bundi that I was staying in. During the bus ride from Kota to Bundi I’d started feeling weak, and within an hour could tell that I was definitely coming down with something. I arrived at the guest house at 6:00pm and immediately fell asleep. A few hours later I awoke with a fever, and decided that food was in order if I was to have a chance at combating the illness. I walked into the living room to find Mama and a number of other travelers scattered around the TV watching (and in the ... read more

Clutching desperately to both, we bounced over bone-shaking roads bordering Bundi. Leaving behind the funeral ceremonies caused by the death of the latest Maharaja of Bundi and the surrounding squabbles around the succession we headed out to see some rock paintings with our new found friend Sharad, a retired engineer, living near Seattle, touring around his home country without his wife. Graeme and he waxed eloquent about the romance of heading off on an old Enfield. A brief romance as Honda Heroes were thought to be far more reliable. We had met a group of fathers and sons from the UK touring around on clapped out Enfields that they were lovingly tending and coaxing around India before shipping them back. We met a young Canadian on a bright red one stuffed with backpacks and paraphernalia. In ... read more
