Day 20 - Arrive back in Delhi It was another good overnight train. Probably the cleanest so far! We were on for about 12 hours. It is weird, but you do soon get used to travelling and sleeping on the trains. It was a good nights sleep for all, with no interruptions! We arrived safely back in Delhi in time for breakfast. Ankur led a small group of us to a local spot for breakfast., The Bread of Life cafe, The local favourite is a mini tiffin. I had that for breakfast. It is bits of this and that with a dosa and a cup of coffee. One strange item on the plate was gunpowder! Strange, but I actually enjoyed it! After settling back into The Hotel Perfect, where it all began, Kyla, Jude and I ... read more

Day 3 - Old & New Delhi - Salaam Baalak Trust and Jama Masjid Mosque I was up at around 6am after not sleeping very well! I have been awake for three days now due to the problems before I left. I am so tired, but was scared that I slept through the alarm! I didn't go for breakfast due to still not having any Rupees yet. Anker reassured me that I can get some later today! I will feel better when I know I have useable cash with me! Salaam Baalak Trust As a whole group we set off in 4 taxis to visit a Planeterra-supported project. It is estimated that 400,000 children live and work on the streets of Delhi. In most cases, their families are too poor to provide for them, they have ... read more

Day 2 - Delhi I safely at about 10am India time. Flight and pick up both went smoothly. I had an interesting transfer ride from Delhi airport to the, 'Hotel Perfect', with two other girls who are bound for the same trip. Emily & Zoe are both from the London area. Good start! The driver gave us a running commentary on the current festival that is building up. We passed a topless car carrying two people who were representing Lord Savva and his bride. There were constant streams of people dressed in orange carrying really colourful, and dressed water carriers. They take water from the Ganges to offer to The Lord and his bride. For this the people will have their wishes granted. Eg be successful, have children etc. The hotel is quite nice, basic, but ... read more

Day one-Travelling Phew wow.... A very hard star to this journey! I have already named it my, 'Exotic Hotel' journey. A pun on the similarly named film! I had two very difficult conversations with Jonny Crooks and my Dad before I left. John updated me on Di's medical situation, which I am struggling to leave behind, but I know Di was keen for me to do this trip for so many reasons; then my Dad, given the situation with the very recent passing of my Mum, it's hard to leave him behind too! I know it is hard for everyone involved on both counts. I am aware that all my friends and family want me to continue with my plans; the hard reality is that there is nothing I can do about any of it. This ... read more

Arriving in Delhi in morning time was probably the biggest shock I´ve ever received before 10 am on a Saturday morning. The city did not mess around - it honestly felt like I was picked up and spun around several times before being set down again. Everything about Delhi demanded to be noticed, from the heat to the mixture of pleasant and absolutely foul smells, to the sheer number of people bustling around it´s streets. It was the most vibrant place I had ever been and was such a far cry from the country lanes of Cornwall that I was hopeless to try and stop myself from being enchanted by it. The people of Delhi (in the least rudest way possible) are the strangest people I have ever encountered. Not only did I see more people ... read more

"Used to say I would go, all I know is I'm back in the world again. Back in the world again, it's the only way to be." - David Grey (Mutineers - Back in the world again) The heat is the first thing that hits you. A wave of humidity mixed with pollution and sand that engulfs every inch of you. With temperatures in the high 40's (Celsius) during the day, it's hard to believe that people survived here pre-air conditioning. Even the airport is minimally conditioned and I find myself already sweating through my sweater and long pants that got me through the long 24 hour journey to India. Coming out of the airport, slightly discouraged having just learned that our bags did not arrive with us, my travel companions and I ventured into the ... read more

After I hit the guy the men around him took a step back and didn't give me a second glance. The train info officer behind the window smiled at me and politely inquired, "How may I help you sir?" New Delhi is definitely a 'Walk softly but carry a big stick, kind of town. We flew out of Kathmandu on a cloudy morning. I awoke that day with a particularly pointed case of Gastro that I had consumed along with a very good pancake the previous day in Bakhtapur. So today's routine went along the lines of; Go to airport, go to bathroom, check-in, go to bathroom, clear security, go to bathroom.... You get the drift. I took a fist full of pills and told the girls that they were going to have to take the ... read more

"There's gotta be something that the poor and less fortunate can practice to bring themselves contentment and happiness. Something that is not religion, drugs or alcohol.... I had a taste of reality today and it left a bitter taste in my mouth. Everything that you'll ever do, every great accomplishments you achieve and everyone you love will one day turn into nothingness..." Journal Entry: 05.26.2014 New Delhi has gotten a bad rap about being an unpleasant place to visit. Though, I found nothing to disprove of that, it is still a great city with extensive history, amazing architectures and informative museums. Like any other big cities in the world, there are people that would go out of there way to help others and there are ones who tries to take advantage of touri... read more

Indira Gandhi International was clean and surprisingly well ordered, which was good because we were both hellishly tired. After clearing customs, we collected our luggage and then found an ATM so we could get some rupees. That done, we wandered over to the parade of men waiting with name boards. My name was on one of them, and I was thankful we’d arranged our airport transfer in advance of arriving. After shaking hands with Rahul, we were led past the trolley boys and babbling taxi wallahs towards the exit. “How are you feeling?’ Angela asked, looking up at the sky. April was the start of the hot season in India, and already the temperature was nudging thirty degrees Celsius. The humidity was bad too, as was the smell – an all-pervading aroma of smoke and wood ... read more
