My next birding stop in Delhi was the Sultanpur National Park which is just outside the city. This is almost (but not quite) as easy to get to by public transport as the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, but it is totally worth the small effort. As yesterday, the start point was the Ravij Chowk metro station, from where I headed to the Huda City Centre station in Gurgaon (an outlying district of Delhi where the local street animal is not dogs or cows but pigs). This takes just over an hour and costs 25 rupees (there's approximately 50 rupees to one NZ dollar). From there I had to take an auto-rickshaw to the Gurgaon Bus Stand from which Mr. Internet had told me there is a Haryana bus route which passes the park. In India a "bus ... read more

My first day in New Delhi I left as a "get used to New Delhi day". Basically I wanted to just wander round the alleys and try to get a sense of where everything was (the metro stations, restaurants, etc). I found a little bookshop which had the new edition of Vivek Menon's Indian Mammals Field Guide for 850 rupees (about NZ$17, much less than what it would have cost me to order it online before I came to India). The smoke/smog issue didn't seem too apparent to me, although there was a definite haze across the sky which cut out the sun a bit so it didn't feel like 35 degrees at all. The dogs, as I said earlier, are all perfectly well behaved. I saw a langur man - that's a person who has ... read more

My flight out of Kota Kinabalu was scheduled for 12.30pm and left at 1.30. It's two and a half hours between KK and KL so I arrived at 4pm, and then my next flight on to New Delhi in India was at 7pm. So far all my flights except the first (between Christchurch and Auckland) have been with Air Asia. Like the old saying goes, if man wasn't meant to fly there wouldn't be Air Asia air hostesses. There were quite a few white girls in the departure lounge dressed in "Indian hippy" style. They look like they have walked into an Indian clothes shop and said "just dress me in everything you've got". It's almost like a weird form of racism. I mean, all the Indians are dressed in normal clothes and these white girls ... read more

I am finally getting caught up to 2016. Yeah, I know this is slow going but the memories are still fresh and I am enjoying writing these so as long as I can do this I will keep going. I have been drooling trying to get to these next few blogs because this was probably one of our craziest trips we have ever done. Background: I have several people from India who works with me and we have become good friends. One of them was getting married (in India) and maybe he was just trying to be nice, but he extended a wedding invitation to everyone. The wedding was in India so yes no one on my team was going to accept that, but they did warn him that I am crazy enough to do it. ... read more

Leh’d – Pilgrimage of riders. I am riding since 2012 and riding in terrains of Ladakh was my dream since long time and finally 2016 gave me escape from my work and other responsibilities. Some experienced riders and my other friends warn me to not to go with my 2009 make FZ but my dream was to accomplish this ride with my own baby so 2ndpreference was not an option for me. Obviously this was my best ride I ever had. Even though we had to face some minor breakdowns, sanitation problems but that was part of adventure and obviously we was mentally prepared for that. My attitude towards riding has changed after this ride and world, distances seems smaller. We started our ride on 29th may’16 from Delhi and our target was Jammu which we ... read more

India had never been on my plans... I'm not a fan of hot, overcrowded places and that's just what India seemed to be so, why would I bother to go there? But two months ago I started a new job and, on my very first day, I was offered an all-expenses-paid trip to India to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary so, even though India wasn't in my plans... how could I refuse? I was getting very nervous about the trip: traveling so far with people I barely knew, to a place that will challenge me in many ways and being apart from Ella and Dax... it wasn't going to be easy. I tried not to think too much about it so the days just flew by and, suddenly, we were at Heathrow waiting to board our ... read more

This, our last morning in Delhi, and India, we slept in late… almost 7am! I worked on my blogs for a while, while Manoli packed our bags and watched some TV. Did I mention their TV programming? It seemed to us that even though they had hundreds of channels; 1 out of 3 was religious, usually with chanting and instruments; 1 out of 3 was a Bollywood sort of song and dance routine, and the rest were news or soap operas. We stored our bags downstairs and went looking for a supposed supermarket south of our hotel called Big Apple. After almost getting lost several times, we finally found it. The supermarket was about the size of a 7-11 back home. Oh well, it was fun. We returned to the hotel and Manoli wanted to buy ... read more

Well, we finally made it to Delhi, India. It may be exotic, but it is also a long ways away, even by plane. Everything went well, as far as connections. The first flight, from Pensacola to Houston took around two hours, in a rather small United jet with about 18 rows of 4-wide seats. Houston International is a pretty big airport, with lots of choices for food and such. Since it was lunch time when we arrived, and I’d already found out that the 4 or 5 hour flight to Newark didn’t serve an y meals, we decided to eat lunch in Houston, a t the Panda Express. We split a 3-entrée, 1-side “big plate” for about $9. We had Honey Walnut Shrimp, Mushroom Chicken and Broccoli Beef for the entrees and mixed vegetables for the ... read more
