A good first day of year 3 programming, though we had to wait for three hours for everyone to show up for the party. We had intended to start at 9:30 am, which suddenly became 11:30 as several groups ran into travel snags. The gyli staff has now resolved to add sdoku and crossword puzzles to our program booklets should this happen again in the future. I finally opened the program with a presentation about the brief history and visions of GYLI. Then it was time of games. Emily led name toss, lane did the great wind blows, Imroz did her now-famous “alive, awake, alert, enthusiastic,” and Amit led walking partner tag in a very small space. Once we get people talking a laughing, then we are moving. After lunch Matt facilitated a “Leadership Styles inventory” ... read more

My cousin - Swanand had been pestering me to start doing practice of climbing small mountain ranges first - Tekadi as we call these in Marathi and then take up the larger mountain ranges. This was only to gradually build up my lung capacity and also to train my aging legs. It is a pity that we do not have such apt words like Tekadi and many more in other foreign languages, and still we say that we are comfortable in such other languages. So Swanand just did not want to leave me since the day I said big Yes to his proposal for Kedar Trek planned in May this year. Finally the D - Day arrived today, or should I say " I was forced in to it finally having no chances for further escapes ... read more

On Thursday we travelled from Mumbai to Pune (pronounced Poona) by train. We opted for 2nd class air conditioned for our first experience of Indian trains, just to be on the safe side. The 4.5 hour, 100 mile journey cost us less than £4 each - a real bargain. We had spacious seats and the 2nd class area was mainly filled with business types and families. Men constantly came through the carriage offering chai tea and food which we didn’t expect, but didn’t try since we brought food. As the journey went on, more people started appearing selling everything from sweets and chocolate to ear muffs(?!). We worked out that they jump on at one station, walk the length and get off at the next station to catch it back the same way. We travelled through ... read more

We got up at 6.30 am with no hint at all of the eventful day that lay ahead of us. After a dose of hot tea, we started off in the fog which had not relented since yesterday. It had rained pretty badly the last night and my apprehensions of climbing the Budhala Machi returned. However I comforted myself in the presence of Bhagoji Dere and started walking. A number of trails spurted out from the original trail creating confusion in a foggy day like this. The rule of thumb was to keep right at the forks, take the middle path at junctions and never descend. We passed the Dhardev mandir and stopped at the second house who offered us with some buttermilk. Bhagoji and his friend at the second house feasted themselves with generous handfuls ... read more

We started around 8 am to hike to aloo darwaja. It was cold and foggy with a visibility of 100 ft. Vivek took a quick dip in Padmavati lake. This guy loves torturing his body and does some wierd things to himself. He slept in a wet T-shirt, shivered all the night, took a dip in the cold lake, did some kind of yoga (dhauti or sth) and was ready to hike with us. After walking for about 30 min, on what we thought would be a machi, we took parting snaps and went different ways. We continued on the trail and completely missed the Alloo darwaza on our left. The trail came to the dead end on a buruz. We climbed on the buruz and spotted a trail on our right which we thought might ... read more

I expected a lot of trekking activity on an extended weekend like this (Gandhi Jayanti, 2nd Oct, on friday). The best place to find people for trekking is a couple of orkut communities and mumbaihikers.org (a nice site keeping a track of trekking activities around mumbai). My first choice, Vasota trek (a long timer on my wish list) didnt work as the group could not obtain the necessary permits (Yes you need permits for this trek !). So I got on to the second choice Torana Rajgad and called Yatin, the organizer. He had called off the plan but gave me Vivek's number who was going with 4 guys and leaving the same day. I wasnt very keen on a three day trek as I was a bit busy in planning my India trip. But the ... read more

Pune is a city of 3 million in the state of Maharashtra, and also where my friend Vishwas lives. After we had a brief intro to the UWC campus and lunch, we returned to Pune to explore the city, and because Cecilia wanted to shop. This is one of the key lessons of GYLI--that in a group setting sometimes your own needs are put aside for the group. The group was Cecilia, Vishwas, his wife Jotti, and I. Half of the group needed to shop, and half did not, so we proceeded to Tulsi Baug, the local shopping area (not the Western Style Mall). On the way I was struck by the number of motor bikes and scooters, they were everywhere and coming at us from all directions. They were just cleaning up and de-constructing from ... read more

We left our hotel in Mumbai yesterday--it was quite a place the Leela. I told the travel agent that we didn't need 5 stars, but if this was only 3 or 4 stars, I was hard to see why.... It was magnificent. On 4 hour ride north and west to Pune, it seemed to take us an hour just to get through Mumbai--sprawling, with high rises everywhere. I guess when you have so many people, you just have to build up, because there is no way to house everyone on their own piece of land. We arrived at the United World College around 12:30pm in the middle of pouring rain. The monsoon season is definitely here--i rained the whole way from Mumbai. The UWC is the site for our program next year, so we were eager ... read more
